Unused or gently used children’s items for ages 0-10 are collected (toys [including music and film DVDs], clothing, formula (that is not expired), medical supplies (breast pumps, other lactation devices), strollers, car seats, school supplies, bedding, bathing and grooming supplies (bathers, unopened/unused creams, lotions, powders), feeding supplies (bibs, baby bottles, food warmers), baby gear (activity gyms, bassinets, play mats, baby carriers, swings), diapers. All donations can be dropped off at the Graduate Life Center from Oct 1-10. On Oct 11, 3:00-8:00pm, the donated items will be displayed in the GLC Multipurpose Room. 12. NEW BUSINESS HOURS IN GRAD STUDENT SERVICES
The Graduate School’s student services and advising area (120 GLC) will operate with new business hours starting Oct 1. On Wednesdays the service area will open at 9:30am and close at 6:00pm. This is a pilot program for the fall semester; at the end of fall we will evaluate the impact of this change and decide whether to continue with altered hours or return to an 8-5/M-F schedule. 15. INTERDISCIPLINARY GRAD STUDY ABROAD PROJECT IN BRAZIL – 1st posting
The Center for Leadership in Global Sustainability (CNRE program in the National Capital Region – http://cligs.vt.edu) is offering a graduate-level interdisciplinary study abroad project in Brazil over winter break and the spring semester for students interested in gaining international experience in cross-sector partnerships for sustainable development. The Global Sustainability Initiative (GSI) 2013 Brazil Project will be offered as a spring course (NR 5954) for six credits. Spanning ten weeks with 10 days spent in Brazil over winter break, the GSI Brazil Project will explore innovative cross-sector strategies to conserve and enhance Brazil’s valuable ecosystem services while meeting rising global food demands. The team will travel to a variety of locations including the Atlantic Rainforest and Cerrado biomes, and cities that are leading the way for green infrastructure in Latin America. 18. WAGE POSITION OPEN FOR GRAD STUDENTS – 2nd posting
Drs. Holly Matusovich and Marie Paretti in the Department of Engineering Education are currently seeking graduate students to transcribe interviews associated with an NSF-funded project entitled “Understanding Barriers to Engineering as a Career Choice Among Appalachian Youth”.  The interviews are one-on-one and are approximately one hour long.  Participants range from high school students to working professionals.  The position will be approximately 10-20 hours of time per week at $10.00/hour to start. The Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Collaborative Research Support Program (SANREM CRSP) is a USAID-funded project that conducts applied research to support the implementation of sustainable agriculture and natural resource management practices in developing countries. A GRA is sought to conduct research in soil and crop management for conservation agriculture farming systems, soil-based carbon sequestration, and climate change. A new study is investigating how mothers and children interpret situations in their day-to-day lives. 23. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY OF ANXIETY AND DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIORS IN CHILDREN-1st posting
This project is for children ages 10-14 and their families. The family will have the opportunity to participate in an experimental treatment lasting approximately 12 sessions designed for children who worry excessively and exhibit disruptive behaviors (e.g., talking back, refusing to do things, becoming easily angered, etc.). Children participating in the study will be assessed prior to treatment, throughout treatment, immediately following treatment, and 1 month later. All assessment and treatment sessions will be free of charge.The study is being conducted at the Child Study Center of Virginia Tech. 24. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR ELECTION VOLUNTEERS STUDY – 1st posting
A VT graduate student is looking for volunteers from the local offices of the presidential election campaigns to participate in a study about campaign messages. Respondents will be asked to complete a brief survey, and selected contributors may be asked to participate in 1-3 one-on-one interviews at their convenience, either in person or over the phone. A study through the VT Department of Psychology is examining mother-child interactions in children without a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Researchers seek children ages 4-11 without an Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism, Asperger’s, or PDD-NOS) to complete age-appropriate play-based tasks involving mother and child (1 visit) in the VT Autism Clinic in Blacksburg or Roanoke Higher Education Center in Roanoke. Researchers are looking for children aged 8-10 to participate in a study on enactment-based creative storytelling.  The child will be asked to enact and create stories using gestures and physical objects. Holly Matusovich and Marie Paretti in the Department of Engineering Education are currently seeking graduate students to transcribe interviews associated with an NSF-funded project entitled “Understanding Barriers to Engineering as a Career Choice Among Appalachian Youth”.  The interviews are one-on-one and are approximately one hour long.  Participants range from high school students to working professionals.  The position will be approximately 10-20 hours of time per week at $10.00/hour to start. A study through the VT Department of Psychology is examining mother-child interactions in children without a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Researchers seek children ages 4-11 without an Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism, Asperger’s, or PDD-NOS) to complete age-appropriate play-based tasks involving mother and child (1 visit) in the VT Autism Clinic in Blacksburg or Roanoke Higher Education Center in Roanoke. The Graduate School’s student services and advising area (120 GLC) will operate with new business hours starting Oct 1. On Wednesdays the service area will open at 9:30am and close at 6:00pm. This is a pilot program for the fall semester; at the end of fall we will evaluate the impact of this change and decide whether to continue with altered hours or return to an 8-5/M-F schedule. 2. USING JMP TO DESIGN EXPERIMENTS AND ANALYZE THE RESULTS

The classical design (factorial design, response surface design, etc.) may fail to meet requirements due to an irregular design space, involving categorical variables, a nonstandard model and unusual requirements of sample size. This class will introduce how to use JMP to tackle these design challenges within a unified framework and make best use of your design budget. Reformed Presbyterian Missions is sponsoring this lecture for graduate students and faculty entitled "Why Universities Can’t Do Without God:  The theistic foundations of modern education and research."  Dr. James Anderson will be discussing why education and scholarship must be built on the prior knowledge of God, showing the necessity of a theistic worldview to science, research, education, and ethics.  Before earning his PhD in Philosophical Theology, Dr. Anderson earned a PhD in Computer Simulation from the University of Edinburgh and worked in research in that field for 10 years.  He is currently a professor at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC.  The lecture is free and open to the public.

23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR ANKLE INSTABILITY STUDY – 3rd posting
Healthy, young adults WITH a history of ankle sprains are sought for participation in a research project on ankle sprain risk factors.  The study will require participants to complete ankle stiffness and joint position sense evaluations under fatigued and braced conditions.  All procedures have been approved by the VT IRB. Participants must be 18-35 years old, active (2-3 times/week), have no existing joint problems or chronic joint pain, and must not be participating in physical rehab or regularly using ankle tape or bracing. Testing requires 3 sessions (about 2–2.5 hrs/session). At Virginia Tech, domestic students are encouraged, but not required, to have personal health insurance. 19. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR LOAD-HOLDING STUDY – 1st posting

22. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BALANCE/GAIT STUDY – 2nd posting
Subjects are needed for a study investigating balance and gait in overweight individuals. The study will take place in the Kevin P Granata Biomechanics Lab in 208 Norris Hall. The study will take 1-1.5 hours to complete, and subjects will be paid $20 for their participation. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR ANKLE INSTABILITY STUDY – 2nd posting
Healthy, young adults WITH a history of ankle sprains are sought for participation in a research project on ankle sprain risk factors.  The study will require participants to complete ankle stiffness and joint position sense evaluations under fatigued and braced conditions.  All procedures have been approved by the VT IRB. Participants must be 18-35 years old, active (2-3 times/week), have no existing joint problems or chronic joint pain, and must not be participating in physical rehab or regularly using ankle tape or bracing. Testing requires 3 sessions (about 2–2.5 hrs/session). Public Knowledge Journal (PKJ), an open-access peer-reviewed online journal hosted at VT, seeks articles, book reviews, essays, interviews, and multimedia submissions for Volume 4, Issue 2, on Interventions. Read the complete CFP (Call For Papers) at http://pkjournal.org/?page_id=1826. This graduate-student-managed journal is dedicated to the understanding of the journal process for new scholars, and thus only accepts submissions from current graduate students or of research conducted while enrolled as a graduate student. Some questions to consider: How does the response to the financial crisis shape or preclude social intervention? What kinds of (non)intervention would be the most socially useful? Who should be responsible for what kinds of financial interventions? What role should local authorities, state government, international bodies, corporations, and NGOs play in global environmental interventions? Who has a voice in the 21st century foodscape? How do global economic interests influence individual food choices? What is the most feasible mode of food production? Are such methods desirable? According to whom?
 
27. MALE PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR METABOLISM STUDY – 3rd posting
Volunteers are needed for a study examining how diet influences muscle metabolism. Must be: male between the ages of 18-40; not currently taking any medications; non-smoker; without any major medical problems; willing to eat a high fat diet for 4 weeks.
