4. REFERENCE LIBRARY ASSISTANT POSITIONS OPEN – 1st posting
The University Libraries are accepting applications for four Reference Library Assistant (RLA) positions for the 2014-2015 academic term. 10. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR USER STUDY OF ONLINE RESOURCE IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES COMMUNITIES – 3rd posting
Participate in a 2-hour IRB-approved study to evaluate bioinformatics website. The study will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud. Preferred participants are undergraduate and graduate students from the Biological Sciences programs. Participants will verbalize their thinking about the website (positive and negative aspects about the website). At the end of the eye-tracking session, participants will fill out one online survey. 11. USER STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 3rd posting
18-64 year-old participants in good health and with at least a month’s experience in 3D modeling or art like clay, sculpture, fabric or other tangible mediums are sought to participate in a study on how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system. For one max. 2-hour session, researchers will study how you use their system, what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and the times are very flexible to meet your schedule. If selected to participate, you will be asked to read a written consent form, and will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art. The moderator will train you on how to use the system, and then you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do. You will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Audio will be recorded during the interview. The IDP process involves both self-assessment and preparation of a written plan that includes academic, scientific, professional, and/or career goals (these may be academic or non-academic). Through this process some trainees will identify areas where more information is needed in order to refine their goals and next steps- the BEST Program would like to help fill those gaps by connecting trainees to resources and subsequent career talks/workshops. 6. CERTIFICATE PROGRAM ‘STRATEGY & MARKETING FOR EMERGING COUNTRIES’ IN U OF SAO PAULO – 1st posting
The courses take place in São Paulo, Brazil and offer an opportunity for students from all over the world to attend a 3-week certificate program and immersion experience. Students are supported by an extensive scholarship program, covering 70% of the expenses of the chosen course. Course components include: strategic and marketing aspects of conquering markets in low incoming countries; current economic scenario of Brazil and other emerging countries; sustainable development in emerging countries; and guided visits to companies and organizations. 9. HONOR SYSTEM SEARCH FOR CHIEF JUSTICE NOW OPEN – application deadline 5/16
The Graduate Honor System is searching for a new chief justice due to the impending graduation of the current chief justice, Jordan Booker. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • must be a graduate student in good standing who has been in residence for a minimum of one semester
  • be able to serve as Chief Justice for at least one year while enrolled full-time in the Blacksburg campus.

11. GLC WAGE POSITION OPEN FOR STUDENT BUILDING MANAGER – 3rd posting
The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Operations Manager for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. Participate in a 2-hour IRB-approved study to evaluate bioinformatics website. The study will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud. Preferred participants are undergraduate and graduate students from the Biological Sciences programs. Participants will verbalize their thinking about the website (positive and negative aspects about the website). At the end of the eye-tracking session, participants will fill out one online survey. 16. USER STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 2nd posting
18-64 year-old participants in good health and with at least a month’s experience in 3D modeling or art like clay, sculpture, fabric or other tangible mediums are sought to participate in a study on how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system. For one max. 2-hour session, researchers will study how you use their system, what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and the times are very flexible to meet your schedule. If selected to participate, you will be asked to read a written consent form, and will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art. The moderator will train you on how to use the system, and then you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do. You will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Audio will be recorded during the interview. Assistant Editor, Review of Middle East Studies (RoMES)—starts August 2014. RoMES is published by the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) and based in the VT Department of Religion and Culture. It publishes book reviews, current reports, and peer-reviewed essays on the state of the art of the field for an international, interdisciplinary audience. Participants are needed for a VT study investigating different load carriage methods on flat and inclined surfaces, and how these methods influence injury risk. The study (IRB # 14-347) consists of one session for about 3 hours. The VT Industrial Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory will conduct a study examining the mechanics of the lumbar spine in healthy adults. 26. USER-STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 3rd posting
Researchers will be studying how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system during one max. 2-hr session, including what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and times are flexible to adhere to your busy schedule. If selected for the study, you will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art, and you will be trained on how to use the system. For the experimental session, you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do during the training and experimental session. Afterwards, you will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Participants must be 18-64 years old, free of health detriments that could impede, delay or harm them in performing hand movements and completing questionnaires. Faculty involved with the AFP are planning a graduate-level Community Food Security Course to be offered to any graduate student interested in this topic from both a practitioner and scholarly perspectives. To ensure this course meets student needs, your input is needed! For example: What do you know about food security? What do you want to know? What information do you need for a future career? The VT Industrial Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory will conduct a study examining the mechanics of the lumbar spine in healthy adults. Participants will work with a research assistant to twist and bend the subject’s torso within the limits of daily living. The study requires a single experimental session that lasts for 2-3 hours. Participating subjects will be compensated $10/hr for their time. Subjects 25 years and older are preferred, but subjects over 18 will be considered. Subjects must not suffer from any systemic inflammatory condition or any other series medical condition, or have a history of a spinal disorder, spinal fracture, or spinal surgery. 25. USER-STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 2nd posting
Researchers will be studying how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system during one max. 2-hr session, including what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and times are flexible to adhere to your busy schedule. If selected for the study, you will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art, and you will be trained on how to use the system. For the experimental session, you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do during the training and experimental session. Afterwards, you will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Participants must be 18-64 years old, free of health detriments that could impede, delay or harm them in performing hand movements and completing questionnaires. Ig Noble Prize winner Richard Stephens will share the details of his research on swearing as a response to pain. 5. NEW GRAD COURSE STARTING SUMMER 2014: GRAD 8004 PRODUCTIVE PROCRASTINATION
Associate Deans Hajj and Blieszner will team-teach a new special study course beginning Summer I, 2014 and continuing every term including Maymester and Wintersession. GRAD 8004, Very Special Study: Productive Procrastination, will cover basic and advanced techniques for extending opportunities to remain in a comfortable graduate student status for as long as possible. Extensive practice in applying procrastination techniques in multiple disciplines, with assignments tailored to students’ major and level of procrastination experience. Upon successful completion of this course, students shall be able to: (1)  complete enrollment,  drop, and withdraw forms with mistakes and significant delays; (2) manage emotions and guilt associated with watching TV instead of completing school work; (3) deliver convincingly the known/most common excuses to request multi-purpose extensions; (4) lead a team of procrastinators for the purposes of collecting, counting, and adding to uncompleted tasks; (5) take more and more days to write extensive letters several pages in length to request deadline extensions. Prerequisite: Graduate standing or sitting. Credits: Variable (1-19, >19 with special permission).  May be repeated up to 10 times with different topics. 6. STEGER TRAVEL INITIATIVE
The Division of Outreach and International Activities is pleased to announce the Steger Travel Initiative.  This new initiative provides free trips to exotic international locales for conducting personal research into the culture, geography, anthropology, sociology and history of these locations.  Destinations include Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Aruba, Barbados, Capetown, Johannesburg, Cairo, Casa Blanca, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, Berlin, Zurich, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Bombay, Katmandu, Bangkok, Singapore, Bali, Manila, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Tokyo. 7. NEW CHILD-CARE ALTERNATIVE IN THE GLC
The Graduate School offers a new, low-cost child-care opportunity for female graduate students. After some renovations, Room C will be turned into a giant ball pit, where children can be dropped off daily (aged new born to 3, must be potty trained) from 7:00-7:05am. Students must pay $125 per child/month. Each additional child gets a 10% discount. Children can be retrieved from the ball pit between 8:00-8:05pm daily. This program supports graduate student parents who need some time away from their children to conduct their research.

4. WOMEN’S CENTER CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL 2014

12. VT ENGAGE APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MAR 31 – deadline today
The John E. Dooley Student Engagement Grant (JEDSEG) application deadline has been extended until Mar 31 at midnight. This grant funds highly motivated students or student teams who plan to invest in their community by creating an opportunity for active civic engagement. Two awards of $750 each are available. Student teams can be informal or formal registered student organizations. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply. 14. GA POSITION OPEN IN INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH & EFFECTIVENESS FOR FALL 2014 – 1st posting
VT’s IRE office is looking for a Graduate Assistant for Fall 2014 and possibly immediately to assist with the conversion of some static web-site activity to dynamic, user-driven, SQL-Server apps. Required skills include SQL, with ideally at least an awareness of SQL Server Reporting Services. Additionally some experience with JavaScript and ASP.NET, using C# or VB.NET would be great. The HRC Grad Fellow serves the intellectual life and educational mission of the HRC and University Honors, and works closely with the faculty principal. 17. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DOCUMENTATION STYLES STUDY – 1st posting
VT researchers are seeking participants 18 or older for a study on how-to documentation styles. Sign-up at https://doodle.com/v8p52i8e36cchuzr for a one-hour session. Location: McBryde Hall 110. The experiment will take about one hour. Prior to testing, participants will be asked to complete a pre-questionnaire asking basic demographic and background information, then will be presented with three short how-to documents for questions and document evaluation. Afterwards, they will complete a post-questionnaire on their experience. The survey is online, thus participants will be asked to bring their laptops. If a participant does not have access to a laptop, he or she is asked to please contact Rebecca Zeitz at razeitz@vt.edu. Data collected during this study will contribute knowledge in terms of technical documentation discourse and format type, relating to both authorship and readership.  The findings will be analyzed for contributions towards a foundation for technical communications.

18. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR HUMAN GAIT STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a VT study investigating the biomechanics of human gait, including low-back fatigue. The study (IRB # 10-117) consists of one session for about 3-4 hours. Requirements: male or female with no recent history of musculoskeletal disorders within the age range of 18-30. Participants will be compensated $10/hr. 22. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY – 2nd posting
VT-SCORES (VT Signal Control & Operation Research and Education Systems lab) is conducting a driving simulator study to investigate driver behavior, performance, and attention when encountering car-following situations.  The study looks at the effects of emotions on driver behavior through the use of psychological (emotion) and physiological (heart rate, skin conductance) data. The study will take no more than two hours, and participants will deal with driving simulation equipment to help contribute to the understanding of dangerous driving behaviors that could reduce frequency of these behaviors and ultimately save lives. You can opt out of the experiment at any time if you experience dizziness or any similar minimal risks associated with driving simulation studies, or for any other reason. Must be licensed drivers at least 18 or older. Data obtained from the simulator will be confidential.
