6. ‘CROSSING BORDERS’ FILM AND DISCUSSION

‘Crossing Borders’ is a 70-min documentary that follows four Moroccan and four American university students as they travel together through Morocco and, in the process of discovering ‘The Other,’ discover themselves. The relationships formed through shared experiences contrast sharply with the media-shaped views Americans and Muslims have of each other. Humor, honesty, and a willingness to be challenged all bring individuals closer to each other and the relationships that develop disarm hidden stereotypes. A short Q&A session moderated by Dr. Guru Ghosh, associate vp for international affairs, will follow the screening. This event is sponsored by the Language and Culture Institute, the Education Abroad Office, the Peace Corps, and the Phi Beta Delta international honor society, and is posted on behalf of grad student and Peace Corps recruiter Chris Hickey.

16. 2012-13 UNIVERSITY-SPONSORED HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN – SIGN UP BY OCT 1
At Virginia Tech, domestic students are encouraged, but not required, to have personal health insurance. International students and veterinary medicine student are required to have health insurance either through VT plan (provided by Aetna) or a comparable plan. Participants are needed for a survey on the public education and perception of historic battlefields among the VT community. As a potential participant, your opinions may be important. 22. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BALANCE/GAIT STUDY – 2nd posting
Subjects are needed for a study investigating balance and gait in overweight individuals. The study will take place in the Kevin P Granata Biomechanics Lab in 208 Norris Hall. The study will take 1-1.5 hours to complete, and subjects will be paid $20 for their participation. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR ANKLE INSTABILITY STUDY – 2nd posting

Healthy, young adults WITH a history of ankle sprains are sought for participation in a research project on ankle sprain risk factors.  The study will require participants to complete ankle stiffness and joint position sense evaluations under fatigued and braced conditions.  All procedures have been approved by the VT IRB. Participants must be 18-35 years old, active (2-3 times/week), have no existing joint problems or chronic joint pain, and must not be participating in physical rehab or regularly using ankle tape or bracing. Testing requires 3 sessions (about 2–2.5 hrs/session). Public Knowledge Journal (PKJ), an open-access peer-reviewed online journal hosted at VT, seeks articles, book reviews, essays, interviews, and multimedia submissions for Volume 4, Issue 2, on Interventions. Who should be responsible for what kinds of financial interventions? 27. MALE PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR METABOLISM STUDY – 3rd posting
Volunteers are needed for a study examining how diet influences muscle metabolism. Must be: male between the ages of 18-40; not currently taking any medications; non-smoker; without any major medical problems; willing to eat a high fat diet for 4 weeks. Last year’s event drew 20,000 attendees throughout the day, featuring games, music, diverse food options, prizes, a business expo, student organization showcase, and volunteer fair.  Volunteers are needed  for the many support roles an event of this size requires.  Duties include everything from setting up tables and production equipment to providing information to participants, directing traffic, helping with load-in, staffing the Gobblerfest headquarters tent, driving shuttle vans, serving as clean-up crew, and breaking down the tables and packing away the memories when the fun is over. 26. LEADERSHIP TECH YR 3: ENGAGING LEADERSHIP – 3rd posting
The Department of Student Centers and Activities is seeking 2 graduate student volunteers to serve as small-group facilitators for the Community and Environmental Sustainability group in the Leadership Tech Year 3 program.  Participants develop their potential for responsible citizenship and leadership through group-directed community service projects.  Facilitators will work in teams of two or three to guide a group of 10-15 junior and/or senior students through leadership development activities and the project management process.  Training is provided, as is the curriculum for the program.  The time commitment is approximately 2.5 hours a week and it is a two-semester commitment. Participation as a facilitator can count towards field hours for the Citizen Scholar program with the Graduate School. Participants  are sought for a study in the “Exploration of Human Spatial Perception in 3D Immersive Virtual Environments.” 80 students will take part in the experiment to evaluate interaction techniques in an immersive virtual environment (i.e., CAVE). Participants will explore several virtual objects and accurately perceive the spatial aspects, e.g., size, shape and distance between two objects, of the objects, by using a given interface. Due to the tasks that may require some physical activities, you should have no problem with moving your body, e.g., head, arm/hand/finger and leg/foot, including turning your upper body. Location: Visionarium Lab (3050 of Torgersen Hall). Review schedule for available dates/times. 10. QG&A WELCOME
Queer Grads and Allies (QG&A) is a registered graduate student organization that provides resources, support, events, and activities for individuals; both queer and allied. Founded in the Fall of 2010 with just three members, this organization has grown to over sixty students and faculty from the Graduate School at Virginia Tech, medical students at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), students at the Veterinary School (VMRCVM), as well as young professionals in the NRV. The organization maintains strong ties with the two other organizations on campus dedicated to LGBTQ awareness and support: the LGBT Caucus for faculty and staff, and the undergraduate organization, the LGBTA of VT. Founded in the Fall of 2010 with just three members, this organization has grown to over sixty students and faculty from the Graduate School at Virginia Tech, medical students at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), students at the Veterinary School (VMRCVM), as well as young professionals in the NRV. The organization maintains strong ties with the two other organizations on campus dedicated to LGBTQ awareness and support: the LGBT Caucus for faculty and staff, and the undergraduate organization, the LGBTA of VT. 17. LEADERSHIP TECH YR 3: ENGAGING LEADERSHIP – 1st posting
The Department of Student Centers and Activities is seeking 2 graduate student volunteers to serve as small-group facilitators for the Community and Environmental Sustainability group in the Leadership Tech Year 3 program.  Participants develop their potential for responsible citizenship and leadership through group-directed community service projects.  Facilitators will work in teams of two or three to guide a group of 10-15 junior and/or senior students through leadership development activities and the project management process.  Training is provided, as is the curriculum for the program.  The time commitment is approximately 2.5 hours a week and it is a two-semester commitment. Participation as a facilitator can count towards field hours for the Citizen Scholar program with the Graduate School. Participants  are sought for a study in the “Exploration of Human Spatial Perception in 3D Immersive Virtual Environments.” 80 students will take part in the experiment to evaluate interaction techniques in an immersive virtual environment (i.e., CAVE). Participants will explore several virtual objects and accurately perceive the spatial aspects, e.g., size, shape and distance between two objects, of the objects, by using a given interface. Due to the tasks that may require some physical activities, you should have no problem with moving your body, e.g., head, arm/hand/finger and leg/foot, including turning your upper body. Location: Visionarium Lab (3050 of Torgersen Hall). Review schedule for available dates/times. Healthy, young adults WITH and WITHOUT a history of ankle sprains are sought for participation in a research project on ankle sprain risk factors.  The project consists of two (2) studies of which participants may complete one or both.  These studies will require participants to perform single leg drop landings before and after fatigue (STUDY 1), and complete ankle stiffness and position sense evaluations under fatigued and braced conditions (STUDY 2).  All procedures have been approved by the VT IRB. Participants must be 18-35 years old, active (2-3/wk), have no existing joint problems or chronic joint pain, and must not be participating in physical rehab or regularly using ankle tape or bracing. A VT doctoral student in human development is conducting a study to learn about how Chinese male international students and scholars construct their sense of being a man and their intimate relationships. In this IRB-approved study subjects will take part in an interview that takes approximately 30-60 minutes.  The information provided by the participants will be held confidential. Your name will not be associated with any study results. Participants must be Chinese male, 18 or older, hold F-1, J-1, or H-1 visa, and been in the United States for at least 6 months. Healthy, young adults with and without a history of ankle sprains are sought for participation in a research project on ankle-sprain risk factors.  The project consists of two (2) studies of which participants may complete one or both.  These studies will require participants to perform single leg drop landings before and after fatigue (STUDY 1), and complete ankle stiffness and position sense evaluations under fatigued and braced conditions (STUDY 2).  All procedures have been approved by the VT-IRB. Must be 18-35 years old, active (exercise 2-3 times/wk), have no existing joint problems or chronic joint pain, and must not be participating in physical rehab or regularly using ankle tape or bracing.
