Janet Kunz, International Tax Specialist, will review the types of income that a foreign national can earn, work restrictions, taxes required to be withheld (taken out) of payments, tax treaties, tax identification numbers, pay dates, documents required by Payroll and tax return reporting. This session may be most helpful for new international students who returning students who are working at VT for the first time and want to better understand their pay stub and tax options.

12. RAFTING/CANOEING/KAYAKING TRIP

If you are interested in rafting an epic river this fall, the Outdoor Club at VT (OCVT) has just the trip for you! OCVT will be doing the Gauley Marathon trip, which consists of rafting both the upper and lower sections of the river in one run of 23 miles. The Gauley River of WV is one of the top whitewater rivers in the world with many class 4 and 5 rapids. Gauley season is only for a few weeks of Sep and Oct each year. OCVT has worked out a great price. Exercise your imagination and creativity in a short design contest (charrette) based on a real-world project that’s coming to Blacksburg. The challenge includes generating conceptual design and naming ideas for a new grad housing complex. Teams of up to three may compete for $100 gift certificates to local restaurants. Background in architecture, landscape architecture or construction is helpful but not required; interdisciplinary teams are encouraged. 21. PART-TIME ASSISTANTSHIP OPENING AT FRALIN LIFE SCI INSTITUTE – 2nd posting

23. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY WITH WALKING TRIALS – 2nd posting
Does the way you move and perform daily activities determine your proneness to falls? Participants in this study on functional and movement variability in laboratory and semi-naturalistic environments will perform walking trials on treadmill and floor with various daily activities, along with pillow carriage. There may be a random slip perturbation anytime while walking, but you will be fully secured in harness. This study will include an in-person lab session, for which you may sign up by emailing the co-investigators (locomotionVT@gmail.com).  The study will last approximately 5 hours and $10/hour will be awarded to the participants. Grad students are sought for a mentor program geared towards underrepresented students who are in their first and second year at VT. Mentors are expected to share their wisdom and experience in support of the success of incoming freshman and sophomore African American students.  This program is not only a benefit to the undergraduates but also to those providing mentoring. 25. PARTICIPANTS WITH SOCIAL ANXIETY OR AUSTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER SOUGHT FOR EYE GAZE STUDY – 3rd posting
VT researchers are seeking teenagers and adults ages 16-45 with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (such as Asperger’s) or Social Anxiety Disorder to participate in a study on the influence of social anxiety on gaze patterns. Involvement in the study will require one visit to the VT campus, after completing a brief telephone screen to determine eligibility. Total time commitment is 1.5-2.5 hours. If you are not a VT student who can receive Sona extra credit, you will be paid $20.00 for participating. Participants driving more than 30 miles to and from the study appointment will also receive mileage reimbursement ($0.50 per mile traveled, with a maximum mileage reimbursement of $50.00). Enroll now in the VT-sponsored student medical insurance plan through Aetna: the open enrollment period is from Jul 26-Sep 30. Read more at http://www.co.vt.edu/Risk/studenthealthinsr/. Please note that due to low enrollment levels in the voluntary dental plan option, Aetna does not offer this program for the 2013-2014 academic year.  Because VT is a state agency, it cannot direct students to specific carriers with whom it has no formal relationship. The Student Medical Insurance Office recommends that students use the internet to identify dental insurance options in Virginia. In general, plans priced in the $460 – $500 range could provide comparable coverage to the previously offered plan. VT-SCORE (VT Signal Control & Operation Research and Education Systems lab) is conducting a driving simulator study to investigate driver behavior, performance, and attention when encountering the yellow light at signalized intersections. This is a multi-state study that looks at the effect of driver experience on driver behavior near traffic signals. The study will take no more than an hour, and your participation can contribute to the development of more intelligent control systems that could reduce crashes at signalized intersections and ultimately save lives. The VT C.A.P. Lab in the Psychology Department is conducting a new study focusing on children’s developing ability to control their actions during games like Simon Says. Researchers are looking for 4- to 4.5-year-old children to visit the lab for one to two hours. During this visit, researchers will play some fun word and movement games with participants. This study aims to develop the fullest picture to date of people’s likes and dislikes in the field of music, examining music genre; the emotions that music arouse and personality, and how all these variables inter-relate. This study is the first to bring all of the variables together, allowing researchers to understand the relationships among variables and their impact. This study is organized by Queen’s University, an Irish University partnered with VT. Participation involves completing a number of questionnaires that are designed to measure a number of personal characteristics. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and you can withdraw at any stage. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. The Graduate School was contacted by local developers for thoughts and suggestions about ways to improve the variety and availability of graduate housing within the Town of Blacksburg. 17. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON PSYCHOLOGY OF MUSIC PREFERENCES – 1st posting
This study aims to develop the fullest picture to date of people’s likes and dislikes in the field of music, examining music genre; the emotions that music arouse and personality, and how all these variables inter-relate. This study is the first to bring all of the variables together, allowing researchers to understand the relationships among variables and their impact. This study is organized by Queen’s University, an Irish University partnered with VT. Participation involves completing a number of questionnaires that are designed to measure a number of personal characteristics. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and you can withdraw at any stage. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. Dedicated graduate student and graduate family housing has been a concern of graduate students, the GSA and the Graduate School for several years now. The Graduate School was contacted by local developers for thoughts and suggestions about ways to improve the variety and availability of graduate housing within the Town of Blacksburg. We have developed this survey to inquire about your interest and needs for graduate housing. A site has already been identified and the local developers intend to begin construction of new housing in the South Main Kroger vicinity within the next 18-24 months. The VT C.A.P. Lab in the Psychology Department is conducting a new study focusing on children’s developing ability to control their actions during games like Simon Says. Researchers are looking for 4-4.5-year-old children to visit the lab for one to two hours. During this visit, researchers will play some fun word and movement games with participants. Graduate student researchers are conducting a study to investigate how obstacles affect turning dynamics while walking. The study will take approximately 2-3 hours and will involve walking and turning around obstacles. Qualifications are: 18-45 years of age, no problems balancing, no history of dizziness, no recent injuries which affect normal walking or turning, and no concussions within the previous year. 2. STATS SHORT COURSES THIS SUMMER: MODEL SELECTION IN R, FEATURING THE LASSO
Monday, Jul 22, 5:15-7:15 pm; 3060 Torgersen Hall Taught by Dr. Chris Franck, this short course will discuss model selection, the purpose of which is to identify a parsimonious model, one that is as simple as possible while maintaining good predictive ability over the outcome of interest. The lasso, or “least absolute shrinkage and selection operator,” provides a method of continuous subset selection. This short course includes lecture and computer laboratory components and covers more advanced content than other LISA short courses. 11. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR NEW GRAD ORIENTATION/WELCOME WEEK -1st posting
The Graduate School is looking for graduate student volunteers (graduate ambassadors) to assist with international graduate student check-in (Aug 12-16), GTA training (Aug 19-2), the Welcome Center and New Graduate Student Orientation in the GLC (Aug 19-23). Roles include: check-in and registration assistance, information and guidance to attendees; Welcome Center staffing; orientation crowd control; program set up and more. If you are available and interested in assisting with any of these events, please fill out this short survey. There will be a training session for grad ambassadors during the week of Aug 12-16.

12. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR GAIT STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a VT study investigating the biomechanics of human gait. The study (IRB # 10-117) consists of one session for about 3-4 hours. Requirements: male or female with no recent history of musculoskeletal disorders within the age range of 18-30. Participants will be compensated $10/hr. 13. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON NON-BIOLOGICAL CHILD ADOPTIONS – 1st posting
Have you or someone you know adopted a child who is not biologically related to you or your partner? Has the child lived with his/her adoptive family for at least 2 years? Was at least one grandparent alive during that time period? A VT doctoral student researcher would like to speak with the adoptive parent(s) in a casual interview in the convenience of their home or over the phone. 14. FOUR- TO FOUR-AND-ONE-HALF-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN SOUGHT FOR STUDY – 1st posting
The VT C.A.P. Lab in the Psychology Department is conducting a new study focusing on children’s developing ability to control their actions during games like Simon Says. Researchers are looking for 4-4.5-year-old children to visit the lab for one to two hours. During this visit, researchers will play some fun word and movement games with participants. 19. RESEARCH SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR GAIT AND TURNING STUDY – 2nd posting
Graduate student researchers are conducting a study to investigate how obstacles affect turning dynamics while walking. The study will take approximately 2-3 hours and will involve walking and turning around obstacles. Qualifications are: 18-45 years of age, no problems balancing, no history of dizziness, no recent injuries which affect normal walking or turning, and no concussions within the previous year. 20. GRAD HOUSING SURVEY STILL OPEN
If you haven’t filled out the housing preferences survey yet, the Graduate School invites you to do it this week. Recently, the Graduate School was contacted by local developers for our thoughts and suggestions about ways to improve the variety and availability of graduate housing within the Town of Blacksburg. A site has already been identified and the local developers intend to begin construction of new housing in the South Main Kroger vicinity within the next 18-24 months. The survey will take approximately 10-12 minutes. The information you provide will help us better understand the housing needs of our current and future graduate student community. ICAT DIGITAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN
Saturday, Aug 17 and Aug 24, 1:00-5:00pm
The VT Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT), is organizing a workshop for children aged 8-11 on digital storytelling. Participants will try out a new story authoring system prototype that allows the creation of story scenes via enactment, practice story writing and engage in a basic electronics storytelling papercraft project. All materials and equipment will be provided.  Participants need to sign up for only one of the sessions. 5. REGISTER NOW FOR “POVERTY TODAY: CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES” EVENT
Friday, Jul 19, 8:30am-4:30pm, Roanoke Higher Education Center
Registration is now open for "Poverty Today: Challenges and Opportunities, " a one-day event with VT presenters at the Roanoke Higher Education Center. This event is free to attend but registration is required. Register at http://www.cabellbrandcenter.org/Registration2.html . A catered lunch will be provided. This event is co-hosted by the Cabell Brand Center for Global Poverty and Resource Sustainability Studies and the Shepherd Program at Washington & Lee. Participants will explore how poverty is defined, how it is viewed in our society, and who can take action for those in need. Participants will benefit from presentations by two nationally recognized speakers, other notable oral presentations as well as roundtable discussions. The roundtable session is meant to facilitate communication and collaboration between participants from diverse backgrounds tackling major topics in the fight against poverty.

The Research and Instructional Services (RIS) department is accepting applications for one Graduate Assistant (GA) position, and approximately five Reference Library Assistant RLA positions for the 2013-14 academic year. Part-time, summer office assistant needed for 10-15 hours a week with alumni relations, in the Office for Diversity and Inclusion. The Center for Applied Technology in the Humanities seeks a graduate research assistant to provide technical support for ongoing initiatives in the digital humanities. Potential projects include digitizing literary texts, developing websites to support scholarly communities, text mining and data visualization on large datasets, and GIS mapping. The ability to quickly learn new technical skills is essential; previous experiences with TEI, XML, XSTL, eXist-db, MySQL, Drupal, or WordPress is a plus. 20 hrs/wk during 2013-14 academic year; full tuition scholarship and stipend.
