3. SALARY NEGOTIATION 101 FOR WOMEN

This workshop is designed to empower college women and provide them with the tools to negotiate salaries and benefits as they approach the job market. 10. GRADUATE RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS – 1st posting
The Graduate Student Assembly’s Graduate Research Development Program (GRDP) will be accepting applications Mar 24-31 for the 2014 spring cycle. GRDP provides monetary support to graduate students for research associated with their thesis or dissertation. The maximum awards are $500 for master’s students and $700 for doctoral students. To submit applications or for more information about the program, eligibility, application process, and FAQs, search scholar for “GSA GRDP Spring 2014” to access the site. 14. LISA STATISTICAL COLLABORATION SERVICES – 2nd posting
Since 2008 more than 1,200 graduate students have advanced their research by collaborating with statisticians from LISA (Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis). Request a collaboration meeting today (www.lisa.stat.vt.edu/www.lisa.stat.vt.edu/?q=loginredirector) for advice on designing your study or experiment, analyzing your data, or interpreting your results. Initial meetings typically last for one hour and can be followed-up with additional meetings if necessary to help you answer your research questions. LISA collaborations often result in co-authored publications finished faster and published in a more prestigious journal than what would be possible without expert help from a LISA statistical collaborator. 25. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR USER STUDY OF BIOINFORMATICS RESOURCE – 3rd  posting
Participate in a study to investigate the underlying processes of bioinformatics experiments. The study will take approximately 2 hours and will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud while you perform tasks using a computer. Preferred participants are proficient in the use of bioinformatics resources, are familiar with the process of functionally analyzing a gene sequence.We will compensate participants at a rate of $10 per hour for a maximum of 2 hours, or a maximum of $20 total.  2. LISA SHORT COURSE: GRAPHICS IN R
Tuesday & Thursday, Feb 25 & 27, 4:00-6:00 pm;  3060 Torgersen Hall
The ability to create professional-grade graphics is of key importance for scientific communication. The R programming package offers a powerful, flexible, and free platform which can be used to produce publication-quality graphics. Taught by Xinran Hu, this short course will introduce R techniques to produce several statistical graphs including histograms, bar plots, box plots, scatter plots and 3D contour plots among others. Syntax to control colors, plotting characters, axes, legends, and labels will be covered, and users will learn to write high resolution graphics to the file type of their choice. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components. This session is the third in a 3-course series which assumes no previous coding experience in R or any other language. Participants needed for a study that assesses muscular imbalances in the neck and shoulder area in patients with postural deficiencies.  Participants must be 18 or older and show postural changes such as: forward head posture, elevated and protracted shoulders, and winging of the scapulae. Common symptoms include:  neck pain, shoulder pain, and cervical headaches. Participants must be free of diseases that prevent physical loading, and should not have had prior surgery involving the cervical or thoracic spine and shoulders. 18. NEW GLC LOCKER RENTAL POLICY -1st posting
For the remainder of the SPRING 2014 semester, the GLC’s lockers will be available to rent on a short-term, weekly basis. To rent a locker, see a building manager at the GLC Welcome Center to receive a key. Keys will no longer be left on lockers; instead they are secured by the GLC staff and issued to a student once requested. One locker per person. The maximum time period of reservation is from Monday 7:30am to Saturday 9:00pm, at which time the key must be returned to the Welcome Center. Participants are needed for a study to investigate how mental and postural demands affect our overall mental workload.  You’ll be asked to do some simple mental tasks while researchers measure your postural stability, heart rate, and brain activity using EEG. Study participants must be right-handed,  between the ages of 18-30 with no history of low back pain. Participants needed for a study that assesses muscular imbalances in the neck and shoulder area in patients with postural deficiencies.  Participants must be 18 or older and show postural changes such as: forward head posture, elevated and protracted shoulders, and winging of the scapulae. Common symptoms include:  neck pain, shoulder pain, and cervical headaches. Participants must be free of diseases that prevent physical loading, and should not have had prior surgery involving the cervical or thoracic spine and shoulders. Participants are required to perform muscle strength, muscle endurance, and range of motion exercises. There will be one experimental session which lasts approximately 2 – 3 hours. Volunteers are needed for a study examining how cocoa influences metabolism in individuals with pre-diabetes (high glucose levels). Participants must be: adults between the ages of 40-75; overweight or obese (body mass index 25-40); not currently taking any blood pressure or diabetes medications; non-smokers; without any major medical problems; willing to eat a controlled study diet for 4 weeks; Pregnant women or those who plan to become pregnant or have taken antibiotics in the past 3 months are not eligible for this study. Participants will receive information about glucose and cholesterol levels, body composition, and blood pressure, and may receive up to $300 compensation for their time. The registration system for paying comprehensive fees through payroll deduction for spring 2014 is now open.  Graduate students on an assistantship must either pay their comprehensive fees or enroll for payroll deductions by the payment deadline set by the Bursar’s Office.  To enroll in payroll deductions, login to Hokie SPA, choose University Account Information menu, and click on Graduate Students on Assistantship, enroll in Payroll Deduction. Applications for the graduate representative for the Board of Visitors (BOV) will be accepted starting next week. The graduate student representative to the BOV serves as a liaison between graduate students and the board. REGISTER FOR RAPE AGGRESSION DEFENSE SYSTEM COURSE – 1st posting Cranwell International Center and VT Police Department have partnered to offer a practical self-defense program taught by all female instructors. The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System is a 12 hour course for women only and is a comprehensive course that includes both classroom and practical components. In the classroom you will learn important information about awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance. The practical component of the course teaches the basics of hands-on defense training. The RAD System is dedicated to teaching women defensive concepts and techniques against various type of assault, by utilizing easy, effective and proven self-defense/martial arts tactics. 11. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR KIDS’ TECH UNIVERSITY PROGRAM – 1st posting
The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, Virginia 4-H, and other members of the VT community are asking for volunteers to assist with logistics of the spring 2014 Kids’ Tech University program (http://kidstechuniversity.vbi.vt.edu/), which brings about 450 kids ages 9-12 to VT to spark their  interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM disciplines). Volunteers are needed on any or all of the following days: Jan 25, Feb 22, Mar 22, and Apr 5, 2014 from 9:00am to 4:00pm. In the morning, there will be an interactive session followed by Q & A, a lunch break, then hands-on activities. If you can only be there for a portion of the time please let organizers know. 12. CALL FOR RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS FOR LIFESTYLE AND CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH STUDY – 1st posting
Men and women 18-35 years old, who are sedentary or recreationally active are invited to participate in a cross-sectional study examining how lifestyle factors influence arterial health. 1-2 lab visits for a total of ~2 hours would be required. Measures include anthropometrics and body composition, surveys, a blood draw, and measurement of arterial health with an ultrasound and a small probe. Participants receive $50 upon study completion.
