3. GLC STUDENT BUILDING MANAGER POSITIONS OPEN FOR FALL 2014 – 1st posting
The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Operations Manager for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. This includes providing excellent customer service, overall building management, reserving rooms, oversight of the welcome center, basic cleaning (wiping tables, vacuuming, etc.) and administrative support. The Student Building Manager has primary responsibility, including emergency response, for the building during evening and weekend hours.  2. SHORT STAT COURSE FOR GRADS: FACTORIAL EXPERIMENTS – BLOCKING, CONFOUNDING, AND FRACTIONAL FACTORIAL DESIGNS
Wednesday, Jul 30, 4:30-6:30pm, 1080 Torgersen Hall
Taught by Emanuel Msemo, this course will cover ways to handle situations when it is impossible to perform all of the runs of the factorial experiments under homogenous conditions. It will also cover the screening experiments in which many factors are considered and the objective is to identify those factors (if any) that have large effects. This short course is open to all, but the audience is assumed to be knowledgeable in ANOVA and basic principles of designing an experiment. A quick introduction to design of experiments will be given. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data. 2. SHORT STAT COURSE FOR GRADS: PARAMENTRIC VS SEMI/NONPARAMETRIC REGRESSION MODELS

The primary goal of this short course is to guide researchers who need to incorporate unknown, flexible, and nonlinear relationships between variables into their regression analyses. Any application area that uses regression analysis can potentially benefit from semi/nonparametric regression. R software will be used in this course, which will cover: (1) Differences between parametric and semi/nonparametric regression models; (2) How do I know if I should use nonparametric regression model for my data? (3) A comparison between parametric and nonparametric regression in terms of fitting and prediction criteria; (4) Methods of fitting semi/nonparametric regression models. 2. SHORT STAT COURSE FOR GRADS: SQL IN R
Wednesday, Jul 16, 4:30-6:30pm, 1080 Torgersen Hall;
Structured Query Language (SQL) is the prevailing language to communicate with datasets today. Many popular statistical packages have integrated SQL as a built-in part or add-on package. Taught by Xinran Hu, this short course will cover basic SQL concepts, querying commands from a single dataset (select, where), aggregate function (group by, having, sum, avg, max, min), and querying commands from multiple dataset (join). Attendees can practice these commands with an online SQL learning source, sqlzoo.net. This short course is an introduction for researchers who want to learn the basic SQL commands. Prior experience with SQL or programming is NOT required. Experience with R is preferred but NOT required. Taught by Chris Franck, this session will introduce R techniques to produce several statistical graphs including histograms, bar plots, box plots, and scatter plots among others. Syntax to control colors, plotting characters, axes, legends, and labels will be covered, and users will learn to write high resolution graphics to the file type of their choice. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components. The lecture component will cover pros and cons of various graphics and approaches, and the computer portion will allow attendees to write, modify, and execute R codes to produce graphics based on these data. Taught by Ian Crandell, this class is the second in a three-course series that assumes no previous coding experience in R or any other language. Experience using R or attending Part I of this series is suggested but not required. The intended audience includes researchers who want to gain basic exposure to statistical analysis in R with the ultimate goal of incorporating R into their research programs. R is a free computing and graphical software/environment for statistical analysis. This course is designed to provide a basic statistical analysis in R using two data sets. The first data set comes from a study of low birth weights and includes 189 observations and various prediction variables. Analyses described include t-tests (one-sample, two sample, paired tests), ANOVA, generalized linear regression (logistic regression), and nonparametric tests. The second data set summarizes binary responses and six continuous predictors. The course includes a lecture portion covering statistical concepts and a computer lab component that covers usage of R to perform the analyses described above. Assistant Editor, Review of Middle East Studies (RoMES)—starts August 2014. RoMES is published by the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) and based in the VT Department of Religion and Culture. It publishes book reviews, current reports, and peer-reviewed essays on the state of the art of the field for an international, interdisciplinary audience. 10. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR USER STUDY OF ONLINE RESOURCE IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES COMMUNITIES – 3rd posting
Participate in a 2-hour IRB-approved study to evaluate bioinformatics website. The study will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud. Preferred participants are undergraduate and graduate students from the Biological Sciences programs. Participants will verbalize their thinking about the website (positive and negative aspects about the website). At the end of the eye-tracking session, participants will fill out one online survey. 11. USER STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 3rd posting
18-64 year-old participants in good health and with at least a month’s experience in 3D modeling or art like clay, sculpture, fabric or other tangible mediums are sought to participate in a study on how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system. For one max. 2-hour session, researchers will study how you use their system, what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and the times are very flexible to meet your schedule. If selected to participate, you will be asked to read a written consent form, and will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art. The moderator will train you on how to use the system, and then you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do. You will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Audio will be recorded during the interview.
