The Senior Program Director (Posting SW0140781) of the VT Graduate School Child Play Group (VT-GS-CPG) will oversee the daily operations of the program, a parent-run cooperative playgroup for children (ages 2-5) with a paid on-site program director. The program will operate three group sessions (3 hrs ea) per day with each group consisting of 15 children. The Program Director works collaboratively with the Childcare Coordinator, Program Session Leaders, and student-parent volunteers to support the mission of the program as well as facilitate daily programming and activities. Participants are sought for a study designed to better understand how the brain works when trying to determine what emotion another person is showing with their facial expression. Participation involves in-lab appointment sessions, which include a brain-scan (fMRI) and an electroencephalogram (EEG). Participants will be compensated up to $75.00. GRAD 4514 Water for Health Seminar (1 cr; CRN 20121) is offered Spring 2015, as part of the Water INTERface IGEP and is open to any graduate students with interests in health, nutrition, environment, and water. Taught by Susan Duncan (FST) and Water INTERface faculty, the course will explore emerging nterdisciplinary issues related to the chemistry, biology, and engineering of drinking water; nutritional and aesthetic values of water and its role in controlling disease and promoting good health; methods of processing poor quality water to drinking water standards; subsequent changes in chemical, biological, nutritional, and palatability characteristics; implications for food preparation, processing, and safety and other consumer uses of water, and more.

16. GU+MP SEEKING MENTORS FROM ALL FIELDS – 3rd posting
The Graduate–Undergraduate Mentorship Program (GUMP) is seeking mentors from all fields! This program allows graduate students to mentor undergraduate students considering graduate school. Undergraduates and graduates are matched according to their area of study, allowing the undergrad to get a taste for graduate school and to ask questions of current graduate students. Each graduate mentor will be matched with 1–2 mentees, who will shadow them at times convenient for the graduate mentor during the spring semester. Mentoring can help build leadership skills and provide an experience to discuss with future employers. 15. NEW INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSE FOR SPRING 2015: WATER FOR HEALTH SEMINAR
GRAD 4514 Water for Health Seminar (1 cr; CRN 20121) is offered Spring 2015, as part of the Water INTERface IGEP and is open to any graduate students with interests in health, nutrition, environment, and water. Taught by Susan Duncan (FST) and Water INTERface faculty, the course will explore emerging interdisciplinary issues related to the chemistry, biology, and engineering of drinking water; nutritional and aesthetic values of water and its role in controlling disease and promoting good health; methods of processing poor quality water to drinking water standards; subsequent changes in chemical, biological, nutritional, and palatability characteristics; implications for food preparation, processing, and safety and other consumer uses of water, and more.

Participants are sought for a study designed to better understand how the brain works when trying to determine what emotion another person is showing with their facial expression. Participation involves in-lab appointment sessions, which include a brain-scan (fMRI) and an electroencephalogram (EEG). Participants will be compensated up to $75.00. Taught by Dr. Michael Speed, this intro to mixed models uses SAS Enterprise Guide to analyze linear mixed models using PROC MIXED. Topics include analyzing data with random effects; learning how to determine what is being tested for the fixed effects; fitting random coefficient models; analyzing repeated measures data; and performing residual and influence diagnostic analysis. A case study will be presented to illustrate all of the concepts and procedures presented in the workshop. 20. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR GOOGLE GLASS STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study investigating the safety and health issues during order-picking using augmented reality technologies. Must be: 18-40 years old; no current or recent history (1 year) of physical disorder affecting shoulder, knee, lower back and ankle joints; no eyeglasses; exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times per week); must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. Participants will perform order-picking tasks (i.e., retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart and maneuvering a hand cart) using a paper pick-list and a Google glass.  During data collection, participants will be asked to wear a wearable motion capture system. Taught by Dr. Michael Speed, this intro to mixed models uses SAS Enterprise Guide to analyze linear mixed models using PROC MIXED. Topics include analyzing data with random effects; learning how to determine what is being tested for the fixed effects; fitting random coefficient models; analyzing repeated measures data; and performing residual and influence diagnostic analysis. A case study will be presented to illustrate all of the concepts and procedures presented in the workshop. 19. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR SOCIAL MOOD AND RECALL STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study examining responses to a mood task. Phase I involves questionnaires related to background, mood, and health. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to respond to an online questionnaire expected to last 30-45 minutes. Based on your responses to the measures, you may or may not be contacted for participation in the second portion of the study, which would be in a lab setting. This will involve you thinking about mood states and expressing these mood states to another same-gendered participant. During these tasks, heart rate measures will be recorded from electrodes placed on your skin. A same-gendered experimenter will provide a tutorial to show you how to place the electrode strap around your torso. You will also be asked to complete a series of questionnaires about your emotional experiences. Taught by Dr. Michael Speed, this intro to mixed models uses SAS Enterprise Guide to analyze linear mixed models using PROC MIXED. 4. "BRIDGES AND BOUNDARIES" WORKSHOP WITH PAKISTANI AND U.S. BANDS

In this workshop two bands, one Pakistani and one US, will share their stories and their passion to perform using traditional instruments to preserve and push the limits of the music they make. Khumariyaan, on tour as part of Center Stage, is keeping Pushtoon music alive, but they have had a challenging time finding acceptance and spaces to flourish. Local well-educated families often see this music as too low-brow and, because Pakistan has experienced a radical turn politically, the band, along with other musicians and craftspeople, have faced threats and violence. The Boston Boys do not face the same physical threats as Khumariyaan, but because their music crosses and blends many genres, defying easy classification, their music is less discoverable and harder to “place” in the vast digital landscape. The VT Language & Culture Institute offers a Science & Technical Writing course that is designed to help international students learn to write conference proposals, articles, and reports that are accepted for presentation & publication. Organizes events such as the GSA Research Symposium that benefit the whole Graduate Student community.  Two graduate students from each department serve as representatives to the GSA. Departmental GSA delegates are responsible for: 1.) Bringing concerns and issues from their constituents to the GSA; 2.) Participating in discussions of issues during GSA delegate meetings, culminating in recommendation and resolutions; 3.) Informing their constituents of relevant policies, issues, events and funding opportunities; 4.) Participating in the planning and organization of GSA events and programs. Holly Matusovich and Marie Paretti in the Department of Engineering Education are  seeking graduate or undergrad student to transcribe interviews associated with an NSF funded project entitled “Lifting the Barriers: Understanding and Enhancing Approaches to Teaching Communication and Teamwork Among Engineering Faculty”. 21. VT/LCI CONVERSATION PARTNERS PROGRAM SEEKS VOLUNTEERS – 1st posting
Would you like to learn more about another country? Do you enjoy spending time with international students?  If so, you should consider becoming a conversation partner! It is difficult for international students to meet Americans with whom they can practice their English, but this is an opportunity to learn about each other’s countries and cultures. Students in the VT Language and Culture Institute can practice their English communication skills and learn about U.S. culture and college life, while you can learn about another country, another culture, and perhaps practice your foreign language skills. 22. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR SOCIAL MOOD AND RECALL STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a study examining responses to a mood task. Phase I involves questionnaires related to background, mood, and health. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to respond to an online questionnaire expected to last 30-45 minutes. Based on your responses to the measures, you may or may not be contacted for participation in the second portion of the study, which would be in a lab setting. This will involve you thinking about mood states and expressing these mood states to another same-gendered participant. During these tasks, heart rate measures will be recorded from electrodes placed on your skin. A same-gendered experimenter will provide a tutorial to show you how to place the electrode strap around your torso. You will also be asked to complete a series of questionnaires about your emotional experiences. In the event that you are eligible for the second part of the study, you will be contacted by email and will be entered into a raffle to win one of three $50 gift cards, and receive extra credit, when applicable. Are you a mother with a child in grades K-5 for the 2014-5 school year? Would you like to learn a new way to approach eating with your family? Do you drink three or more sugar-sweetened drinks each day? (i.e. Soda, sweet tea, sports drinks, specialty coffee, fruit punch/juice, etc.) This program will help you learn about slowing down for meals and reconnecting with food. You will learn strategies for enjoying food and sharing that joy with your family. Participation involves completing a few short questionnaires and providing a salivary sample during the introductory meeting and participating in four group educational sessions. Each of the first three group meetings should take 60 minutes and the fourth will be 90 minutes. Light refreshments will be provided. 11. NSF GRFP APPLICATION PERIOD NOW OPEN – 1st posting
NSF is soliciting applications for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) until the posted deadlines in late October and early November 2014. Since 1952, GRFP has provided Fellowships to individuals selected early in their graduate careers based on their demonstrated potential for significant achievements in science and engineering. Three years of support is provided by the program for graduate study in science or engineering and leads to a research-based master’s or doctoral degree. 13. NIGHT STUDY HALL HEAD MONITOR WAGE POSITION OPEN – 1st posting
The SAASS Study Hall Head Monitor reports to the Assistant Director for Student Athlete Academic Support Services in charge of study hall and is responsible for maintaining an environment for student-athletes that is conducive to studying. The Head Monitor enforces the rules and regulations that the student-athletes are expected to follow, maintaining a working environment during study hall hours, and communicating issues to the Assistant Directors.  The operator will also monitor team study hall in the event of a monitor cancellation.  Hours are 6:00-10:00pm Sunday through Thursday.  Wage is $12.00/hour. Applicants must exhibit professional conduct, have excellent problem-solving skills, and be able to work well with others. The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Operations Manager for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. This includes providing excellent customer service, overall building management, reserving rooms, oversight of the welcome center, basic cleaning (wiping tables, vacuuming, etc.) and administrative support. The Student Building Manager has primary responsibility, including emergency response, for the building during evening and weekend hours. New and current VT graduate students are sought to complete an anonymous 20-minute online survey about academic integrity. Must be at least 18 years old to participate. This study examines the current state of graduate student understanding about academic integrity; results will be used to better understand how graduate students learn about academic integrity, how it affects them, and what measures are in place to preserve academic integrity at Virginia Tech. Results of this survey may be used for publication. Results from this study will be used to enhance graduate education. 18. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR “SLOW DOWN” PROGRAM FOR MOTHERS – 1st posting
Are you a mother with a child in grades K-5 for the 2014-5 school year? Would you like to learn a new way to approach eating with your family? Do you drink three or more sugar-sweetened drinks each day? (i.e. Soda, sweet tea, sports drinks, specialty coffee, fruit punch/juice, etc.) This program will help you learn about slowing down for meals and reconnecting with food. You will learn strategies for enjoying food and sharing that joy with your family. Participation involves completing a few short questionnaires and providing a salivary sample during the introductory meeting and participating in four group educational sessions. Each of the first three group meetings should take 60 minutes and the fourth will be 90 minutes. Light refreshments will be provided. As a thank-you, participants will be compensated $10-$60 on a gift card for participating in and completing the study. 4. SIGN UP NOW FOR PAYROLL DEDUCTION OF COMP FEES FOR GRAD ASSISTANTS
The registration system for paying comprehensive fees through payroll deduction is now open.  Graduate students on an assistantship must either pay their comprehensive fees or enroll for payroll deductions before the payment deadline.  To enroll in payroll deductions, login to Hokie SPA, choose University Account Information menu, and click on Graduate Students on Assistantship, enroll in Payroll Deduction. Students must first register for classes and their employing departments must enter the assistantship appointment on Banner-HR before students can enroll in payroll deduction. You must enroll in payroll deduction each semester in which you wish to take advantage of this opportunity.
