1.  WEEKLY SERVICES IN THE GLC  – SUMMER SCHEDULE
Weekly services are on hiatus in the summer, except for the café. However, career advising, counseling, and writing support are available at each service’s home location in the Career Services Center, Cook Counseling and Newman Library respectively.

  • GLC Café: 3:30-5:00 every Thursday, Reading Room or GLC side patio – year round!
  • Graduate School business hours: M-F: 9:00am-4:00pm

2. GLC CAFÉ

The GLC Café is offered throughout the year with free coffee, tea, and cookies in the company of your graduate-student and Grad-School colleagues. Bring your own mug if you can. Either inside or outside, pending on the weather!

3. FULBRIGHT U.S. STUDENT PROGRAM APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE – 1st posting
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs. During their grants, Fulbrighters will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences.  The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. Through engagement in the community, the individual will interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding. 4. GRADUATE SCHOOL SUMMER HOURS STARTING MAY 19
Starting Monday, May 19, the Graduate School’s student service area (120 Graduate Life Center) will be open Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm. Summer hours are in effect until Friday, Aug 1.

5. COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT WAGE POSITION – 1st posting
The communications assistant for the Fralin Life Science Institute will serve as the writer and editor of the monthly e-newsletter, Inside Fralin, and will be responsible for identifying and developing content for Fralin’s social media sites (currently Facebook, Twitter, and Linked In). The assistant will also help identify and develop content for the website, news releases, news videos, and marketing materials, and assist with special events planning, including workshops, conferences, open houses and faculty and student events. The desired candidate will have a knack for writing, editing, and multimedia production, and will have a passion for the life sciences. Must have bachelor’s degree in communications, English, or other related field. Experience with video production and digital media is a plus. 6. ASSISTANT EDITOR WAGE POSITION STARTING FALL 2014– 3rd posting
Assistant Editor, Review of Middle East Studies (RoMES)—starts August 2014. RoMES is published by the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) and based in the VT Department of Religion and Culture. It publishes book reviews, current reports, and peer-reviewed essays on the state of the art of the field for an international, interdisciplinary audience. The Assistant Editor will use MS Access database and Open Journal Systems to manage and edit book reviews, correspond with associate editors, authors, publishing companies, the editor and editorial assistant, and attend to other administrative duties. Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential; commitment is 10-12 hours per week. The Assistant Editor will begin training with the outgoing Assistant Editor in August. 7. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR VT-SCORES STUDY – 1st posting
VT-SCORES (Virginia Tech Signal Control & Operation Research and Education Systems lab) is conducting a study to collect information on the novel traffic control mechanism for self-driving vehicles. This mechanism is enabling users to select Priority Level for their trip, which is then used to determine right-of-way at an intersection for self-driving vehicles. In addition, there is a supporting structure of non-monetary Priority Credits. Researchers are trying to collect information on decision-making and opinions on this traffic control mechanism for self-driving vehicles using an Internet-based experiment. The study will take around 10 minutes, and your participation can contribute to the development of novel self-driving vehicle control technology. Participation is voluntary and data obtained will be confidential. You can opt out of the experiment at any time. Must be at least 18 years of age; Those who complete the whole experiment may enter a raffle to win a $50 Amazon gift card. The odds for winning the raffle is estimated as 1 in 200. 8. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT – 2nd posting
Participants are needed for a study of international engineering graduate students’ experiences collaborating with faculty in the process of conducting research and writing articles for peer-reviewed journals. You will be asked some questions about your experiences during a face-to-face audio-recorded interview taking about an hour. Limited demographic information will be collected in a short survey. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Participants must be: international engineering graduate students of at least 18 years of age; either finishing the second year of their doctoral program or further along in their studies; with some experience working with faculty members conducting research and preparing a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. 9. NEW HEAD COACH SOUGHT FOR VT CREW TEAM – 3rd posting
The VT Crew team is looking for a new head coach for the 2014-2015 fall/spring seasons. No coaching experience is necessary, but experience as a rower or coxswain is needed. 10. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR USER STUDY OF ONLINE RESOURCE IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES COMMUNITIES – 3rd posting
Participate in a 2-hour IRB-approved study to evaluate bioinformatics website. The study will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud. Preferred participants are undergraduate and graduate students from the Biological Sciences programs. Participants will verbalize their thinking about the website (positive and negative aspects about the website). At the end of the eye-tracking session, participants will fill out one online survey. Participants will be compensated $10 per hour for max. 2 hours, $20 total. If you are interested, contact Jongsoon Park via email babirong@vbi.vt.edu.

11. USER STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 3rd posting
18-64 year-old participants in good health and with at least a month’s experience in 3D modeling or art like clay, sculpture, fabric or other tangible mediums are sought to participate in a study on how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system. For one max. 2-hour session, researchers will study how you use their system, what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and the times are very flexible to meet your schedule. If selected to participate, you will be asked to read a written consent form, and will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art. The moderator will train you on how to use the system, and then you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do. You will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Audio will be recorded during the interview.
