3. ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPY (AFM) WORKSHOP
Mondays, Oct 14, 21, 28 and November 4, 9:30am, Randolph Hall
These AFM session titles are: "History and Application of AFM", "Imaging with AFM", "High Resolution Force Measurements with AFM" and "How to Custom Design an AFM,” respectively. This workshop is organized by COLLOIDS AND SURFACES in association with the laboratories of Prof. William Ducker and Prof. John Walz.  This four-series workshop is designed for faculty, post-doctoral associates, graduate students and undergraduate students who are planning on using atomic force microscopy for research or need some support with various applications. 4. OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING FAIR

Multiple housing vendors, moving and storage companies, insurance companies, legal services, and the Off-Campus Housing office will be available in a single location to provide housing options and information.  There will be giveaways from the vendors, free pizza from 11am-2pm, and a chance to win tickets to the Jason Mraz Concert later that night- Courtesy of The Virginia Tech Union!

5. HOKIE BIKE HUB FIX-A-FLAT WORKSHOPS
Every Wednesday, 12:00-12:30pm, Alternative Transportation Center, 1330 Perry St.
Do you have a flat tire on your bike? Not sure what needs to be done to repair it? Visit the Hokie Bike Hub in the Alternative Transportation Center to learn how to fix a flat tire in no time! The workshop will cover tube replacement, wheel removal and installation, as well as proper inflation of the tire.

8. TRIP TO SINKLAND FARMS
Saturday, Oct. 19, 10:00am, Meet in GLC Lobby
The GLC Fellows and Cranwell International Center invite you to a trip to Sinkland Farms. Sinkland Farms is a nearby farm with its own corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin patch, and plenty of food and fun.  Transportation will be provided but there are a limited number of seats. 9. GONE WITH THE WIND FREE SCREENING

The Virginia Center for Civil War Studies invites you to a free screening of Gone with the Wind at Blacksburg’s historic Lyric Theatre. The afternoon will begin with a brief presentation on the historical significance of this iconic movie. This is the opening event in the Civil War Film Series. 11. GREEN RFP APPLICATIONS NOW ONLINE
The Green RFP directs university funds to student-generated sustainability projects that support energy efficiency and energy conservation. Examples of this past year’s Green RFP projects include the new bike repair stations found across campus, new bike racks, and outdoor recycling bins. There is no funding ceiling for Green RFP ideas, so all sustainability project ideas are encouraged! 12. CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Proposals are invited for the upcoming conference Gender, Bodies & Technology: Performing the Human. The conference will be held May 1-3, 2014 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.  Proposals are invited from scholars in the humanities, social and natural sciences, feminist science studies, visual and performing arts, life sciences, and STEM fields for papers, panels, workshops, new media, art, and performance pieces that explore the intersections of gender, bodies & technology in contexts ranging from classrooms to the military, and from health care to the media.You can find more information about the conference and submit proposals at: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gbt/proposals.html The website and previous announcements list a deadline of October 1, but that has been extended to October 15.

15. GRAD STUDENTS INVITED TO SERVE ON STUDENT CONDUCT COMMITTEES – 3rd posting
VT Student Conduct invites students to submit an application to serve on the Student Conduct Committee during the 2014-2015 academic year!  Student conduct is looking for outstanding graduate students to support and advance the educational mission of Student Conduct and the VT community.  Selected candidates will complete an eight-week competency-based training program during the Spring 2014 semester that equips new committee members with the leadership, conflict resolution, communication, and critical thinking skills needed to be a successful member of our team.  Committee members will serve with a group of 4-5 other undergraduate and graduate students during the 2014-2015 academic year. 16. GLC STUDENT BUILDING MANAGER POSITION OPENINGS – 2nd posting
The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Student Centers and Activities Operations Manager and Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. Building Managers are expected to be “building generalists” charged with general trouble-shooting, making and supervising event reservations and/or services, providing a safe and secure environment for students, guests, and clients alike, supporting custodial, maintenance and event management staffs working within the building whenever necessary, and maintaining superior customer service for all guests. The Student Building Manager has primary responsibility, including emergency response, for the building during evening and weekend hours. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate program at Virginia Tech; must possess demonstrated customer service skills and excellent communication skills; ability to work independently and interface effectively with a diverse clientele. Must be able to move and handle up to 50 lbs. Graduate coursework in Property Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management or Business Management, knowledge of campus and previous facility management work a plus. 17. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR INFORMATION RE-FINDING STUDY-1st posting
Do you have a ton of stuff on your computer?  Is it spread out across your file system, web browser and mail app?  We are interested in how you managed all this information and what you do when you need to find it again later.  We are also interested how your different strategies might align with some of your meetings and events.  This might mean you send emails and utilize file-sharing apps or it might mean you use and share information during meetings, classes, etc.  If this sounds like you, we would like to invite you to participant in our study.  There is a 15-minute survey where two (2) participants will be randomly selected to receive a $25 cash prize.  Using your survey response, you may qualify to participate in a 2-week diary study.  For those who participate in the diary study, two (2) will be randomly selected to receive a $50 cash prize.  Please sign up by contacting Blake Sawyer (basawyer@vt.edu).  Participants must be 18+ years old.

18. GRADUATE AMBASSADORS NEEDED FOR GLC OPEN HOUSE
It’s that time of year again! The GLC’s Annual Open House is October 25, 2013 from 10am-3pm. Graduate Ambassadors are needed to assist with GLC Monopoly – an interactive Scavenger Hunt. 19. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED-1st posting
What would YOU like to see in the arts at Virginia Tech? The newly opening Center for the Arts at VT is seeking input from international students and scholars in the Virginia Tech and surrounding communities on potential visiting artists, new arts programs, and so on. 20. CALLING SOCIAL SCIENCE AND HUMANITIES GRAD STUDENTS – 2nd posting
Gilbert Linkous Elementary School in Blacksburg is hosting the Second Annual Social Science Fair on Nov 14, 6:00-8:00pm where students in grades 3-5 will present their studies in a poster session. A group of brilliant-minded volunteers are needed to inspire a new generation of social scientist. 21. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR WALKING, SLIPPING & TRIPPING STUDY – 2nd posting
The Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab is performing a study on walking, slipping and tripping.  The study involves one lab session, during which the subject will perform a series of walking trials while gait measurements are collected.  The participant may be slipped or tripped during the session, but all participants wear a harness to ensure safety.  The session takes approximately 1.5 hours, and each participant will receive $20 compensation.  Participants must be 18-30 or 60-80 years old.  Both healthy-weight and overweight subjects are needed.  If interested, please contact biomechanics.esm@gmail.com.

Educational researchers estimate that, at best, we retain only about 10 percent of the information that we read. The key to becoming a more effective reader is to learn how academic information in published papers is structured and then to discipline one’s self to hunt for information actively rather than passively wait for the information to appear on the page. This workshop will describe how you can read more actively and purposely in order to locate needed information, increase comprehension, and boast retention for later use. COMMUNITY VOICES: THEATRE IN CONFLICT ZONES

Joanna Sherman, Artistic Director, and Michael McGuigan, Managing Director, from The Bond Street Theatre in New York, will present a video-lecture exploring the impact and value of the expressive arts in areas of conflict. The lecture will show how theatre-based practices are applied in different communities, with specific focus on their work in Afghanistan. Their presentation introduces the idea of theatre as a useful tool for social improvement and bringing peace, and emphasizing why cross-cultural artistic conversations are crucial for mutual understanding.
