3. ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPY (AFM) WORKSHOP

These AFM session titles are: "History and Application of AFM", "Imaging with AFM", "High Resolution Force Measurements with AFM" and "How to Custom Design an AFM,” respectively. This workshop is organized by COLLOIDS AND SURFACES in association with the laboratories of Prof. William Ducker and Prof. John Walz. This four-series workshop is designed for faculty, post-doctoral associates, graduate students and undergraduate students who are planning on using atomic force microscopy for research or need some support with various applications. 5. HOKIE BIKE HUB FIX-A-FLAT WORKSHOPS

Do you have a flat tire on your bike? Not sure what needs to be done to repair it? Visit the Hokie Bike Hub in the Alternative Transportation Center to learn how to fix a flat tire in no time! The workshop will cover tube replacement, wheel removal and installation, as well as proper inflation of the tire. Please bring your own replacement tube. 8. TRIP TO SINKLAND FARMS

The GLC Fellows and Cranwell International Center invite you to a trip to Sinkland Farms. Sinkland Farms is a nearby farm with its own corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin patch, and plenty of food and fun. 11. GREEN RFP APPLICATIONS NOW ONLINE
The Green RFP directs university funds to student-generated sustainability projects that support energy efficiency and energy conservation. Examples of this past year’s Green RFP projects include the new bike repair stations found across campus, new bike racks, and outdoor recycling bins. There is no funding ceiling for Green RFP ideas, so all sustainability project ideas are encouraged! Proposals are invited for the upcoming conference Gender, Bodies & Technology: Performing the Human. The conference will be held May 1-3, 2014 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. 16. GLC STUDENT BUILDING MANAGER POSITION OPENINGS – 2nd posting
The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Student Centers and Activities Operations Manager and Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. Building Managers are expected to be “building generalists” charged with general trouble-shooting, making and supervising event reservations and/or services, providing a safe and secure environment for students, guests, and clients alike, supporting custodial, maintenance and event management staffs working within the building whenever necessary, and maintaining superior customer service for all guests. The Student Building Manager has primary responsibility, including emergency response, for the building during evening and weekend hours. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate program at Virginia Tech; must possess demonstrated customer service skills and excellent communication skills; ability to work independently and interface effectively with a diverse clientele. Must be able to move and handle up to 50 lbs. Do you have a ton of stuff on your computer? Is it spread out across your file system, web browser and mail app? We are interested in how you managed all this information and what you do when you need to find it again later. We are also interested how your different strategies might align with some of your meetings and events. This might mean you send emails and utilize file-sharing apps or it might mean you use and share information during meetings, classes, etc. If this sounds like you, we would like to invite you to participant in our study. 21. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR WALKING, SLIPPING & TRIPPING STUDY – 2nd posting
The Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab is performing a study on walking, slipping and tripping. The study involves one lab session, during which the subject will perform a series of walking trials while gait measurements are collected. The participant may be slipped or tripped during the session, but all participants wear a harness to ensure safety. The session takes approximately 1.5 hours, and each participant will receive $20 compensation. Participants must be 18-30 or 60-80 years old. Both healthy-weight and overweight subjects are needed. COMMUNITY VOICES: THEATRE IN CONFLICT ZONES

Joanna Sherman, Artistic Director, and Michael McGuigan, Managing Director, from The Bond Street Theatre in New York, will present a video-lecture exploring the impact and value of the expressive arts in areas of conflict. The lecture will show how theatre-based practices are applied in different communities, with specific focus on their work in Afghanistan. Their presentation introduces the idea of theatre as a useful tool for social improvement and bringing peace, and emphasizing why cross-cultural artistic conversations are crucial for mutual understanding.
