4. SOFTWARE CARPENTRY WORKSHOP

Software Carpentry aims to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching research computing skills. These hands-on workshops will cover basic concepts and tools for using the command prompt and version control for the Unix shell, plotting and programming in Python or R, and version control with Git. 8. GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP OPPORTUNITY WITH VIRGINIA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION CONTEMPORARY HISTORY PROJECT (1980-2020) – 3rd posting
VCE is looking for a graduate student to help preserve the more contemporary history of Virginia Cooperative Extension, beginning in 1980 and going to the present through a yearlong 20-hour assistantship. The student will work with a faculty team to develop resources that can serve as an ongoing historical account of this time period by analyzing existing documents and materials from University Libraries Special Collections as well as other sites. In addition, the student will organize and conduct focus groups and individual interviews to gather data related to the change in programs, technology and communications, and the administration and organizational structure in VCE during this time frame. The Instructional Design and Instructional Media group within Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS) in the Division of IT, seeks a Blacksburg-based Graduate Assistant (GA) to support the development of content and interactive learning activities within instructional media as part of the development of engaging, technology-enhanced and high-quality courses for online, onsite, connected and web-extended. 10. RESEARCH STUDY SEEKS EXPERIENCED RIDERS OF ELECTRONIC SCOOTERS, BICYCLES, SKATEBOARD AND MONOWHEELS – 1st posting
The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) is seeking individuals, aged 18 to 64, who are experienced users of electric mobility devices, such as e-scooters, bicycles, skateboards, and monowheels. The study involves participating in one daytime session, lasting approximately 2.5 hours. The test session will be video recorded, and participants will be asked to complete questionnaires after each task. The project provides compensation of $75 for full participation. 11. VOLUNTEER AT THE VT HORSE FARMS THIS SUMMER – 1st posting
Volunteer this summer at the Virginia Tech horse farms in Blacksburg. We open our program up to volunteers across campus and throughout the Blacksburg community. Volunteers assist on our feed shifts to provide care to the horse herds on either side of 460 and will learn skills such as routine handling, nutritional management and health assessment. Additional opportunities exist to work with our youngstock, shadow veterinary appointments and even help select the registered names for our 2022 foals! No prior equine experience is required! Volunteers have two options: Commit to 30 shifts between May 16 – August 21st (roughly two a week) or commit to the same two shifts every week – with the ability to request coverage from other volunteers when needed. Feed shift times are 8am and 5pm. Weekday and weekend options available. Volunteers should expect for shifts to last approximately 2 hours. 12. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A CONSUMER STUDY ON HARD CIDER – 1st posting
The Sensory Evaluation Laboratory (SEL) at Virginia Tech seeks participants to evaluate hard cider (IRB 22-220). The study will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday (5/10 and 5/11) from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm. The study will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Panelists will taste 8 hard cider samples. The purpose of this study is to understand how different processing methods influence consumer preference of Virginia hard ciders. 13. NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION SEEKS INPUT FROM DOCTORAL STUDENTS – 1st posting
The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within the National Science Foundation (NSF) is looking for doctoral students to participate in a research study that evaluates potential new demographic questions for the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED). All currently enrolled doctoral students are invited to complete a brief screener survey, which will help determine your eligibility for the study. NCSES’ contractor, RTI International, is conducting the study. All responses will remain private and confidential. Those who are selected to participate in the study, which is estimated to take about 60 minutes, will receive $40 as a token of appreciation for their time. The study will be conducted virtually through videoconferencing between May and July 2022. 15. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON DANCE AND THE BRAIN – 2nd posting
The Embodied Brain Lab at VT investigates how mind-body-movement practices affect brain function and physiology. Help us learn more about the effects of dance on the brain by participating in a 4-week study. Participants will be randomly assigned to either participate in a group movement class or movie watching experience. These sessions will occur biweekly (2x/week) for a duration of 90 minutes. 16. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON ADOLESCENT SOCIAL ANXIETY – 2nd posting
Researchers from the SCANlab are looking for families who have a socially anxious teen (13-17) to participate in a study about how their brains process reward. This study includes the completion of self-report questionnaires, a Zoom call, and an in-person MRI scan. Altogether, participation in this study will take approximately 3 hours. Participants must be teens between the ages of 13 and 17, and must currently identify as socially anxious and moderately stressed. Parents will need to be present during the Zoom call and MRI portions of the study. A total of $80 in compensation will provided to each participant ($15 for completion of questionnaires, $15 for Zoom call, and $50 for completion of the MRI scan). 17. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A MARKET RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
Researchers from the Virginia Tech Economics Laboratory are currently seeking participants aged 18 and older for a research study (IRB: 22-124). This research aims to study the effects of short selling on market bubbles. These studies will involve participating in an experimental market and completing a survey. The study takes place in the Virginia Tech Economics Laboratory in 2088 Derring Hall. The study will take around 90 minutes to complete. Participants will receive $10 as compensation for their time to show up in the lab. They may receive an additional payment depending on their choices in the experiment. All compensation will be paid in cash at the conclusion of the study. 19. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON PEDESTRIAN SAFETY – 3rd posting
Researchers from the Mind Music Machine lab and the Human Impact Lab are conducting research on pedestrian safety for VT students. It will take up to 15 minutes to participate in the experiment. Participants will wear a VR headset during the experiment. Please note, it is not mandatory for students to sign up as a participant, and that their participation is completely voluntary. Participants will be compensated at a rate of $10/hr. Eligible participants are current Virginia Tech students 18 years of age or older, living or traveling to campus, and those who have NOT already participated in this study before.
