Spring has sprung and it’s time for the Fish and Wildlife Graduate Student Association’s second annual BioBlitz! Get outside and identify species in your own backyard using iNaturalist. 3. PANEL DISCUSSION: MONUMENTS, MEMORY AND RECOGNITION

The Moss Arts Center is hosting this panel with Craig Walsh, the creator of the upcoming Monuments installation. The haunting synergy among human form, nature, and the act of viewing enables these trees to be transformed into sculptural monuments. But not “monuments” in a traditional sense. Recognizing the fraught and selective histories that have been embedded in numerous permanent, public monuments, this temporary project challenges that by featuring “unsung,” living, local individuals who are chosen by its host communities. The installation is free and will be held on the Drillfield from April 22-May 14 from 8:30pm-11:00pm.
4. TECHNOLOGY AND THE PROPHETIC VOICE

In this talk we will examine Christian and secular writers who appear to make a similar argument: they claim that contemporary culture has gone awry because we idolize technology and in doing so have lost sight of crucial fundamental values. We will argue that there is good reason to listen to such thinkers, including Jacques Ellul and Theodore Adorno and Max Horkheimer, but also that such views bump into limits. We will also attempt to point to more fruitful lines of criticism and hopeful visioning, drawing on examples from Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus to Christian social activist Catherine Coleman Flowers’ battle to ensure the rural poor have access to functioning septic tanks and sewage systems.

19. RE-ART: “RESPONDING TO CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH ART
Friday, April 22 (Earth Day), 4:30-8:30pm, Squires – Brush Mountain B
This is a two part event that involves a workshop and an interactive activity for participants.
1) A “Best out of waste” installation: This will be an instructed workshop where participants can make products like planters out of bottles, wreaths out of plastic, wind chimes out of tin cans, etc. to promote the reuse of the waste we generate. The art created during this workshop will then be temporarily displayed across campus. 2) “Paint your worries out”: We will ask people to paint/write the environmental problems they are facing in their day-to-day lives on a collaborative canvas which will be displayed on campus following the event. Food will be provided; so please RSVP here. This event will be a part of Earth Week Events and produced by Art for Environmental Justice (AEJ) at VT. SAVES is a group of passionate and dedicated students at Virginia Tech that strive to educate our community on topics such as sexual assault, stalking, gender-based violence, and (un)healthy relationships. By leading presentations, hosting informal discussions, and organizing campaigns like Red Flag, we strive to encourage healthy relationships and make our campus safer and more rewarding for all of its members. Working with the Virginia Tech Women’s Center, we’ll provide students with the necessary training and resources to get started; just bring your enthusiasm and a commitment to helping others! In return, you’ll acquire a solid background in sexual assault/gender-based violence and how to stop it. This qualifies you to be a SAVES peer educator. Along the way, you’ll gain critical hands-on leadership experience in oral and written communications, campaign organization and operations, crisis response, and presentation skills. 25. GRADUATE STUDENTS NEEDED FOR STUDENT LIFE COUNCIL AT VIRGINIA TECH – 2nd posting
The Student Life Council at Virginia Tech serves as an advisory group for Student Affairs. The Student Life Council (SLC) is led by a student chair and consists a diverse committee of up to 20 students. The SLC meets twice monthly to discuss relevant student issues, provide input on emerging projects important to campus life, and offer counsel related to policy, practice, and the aspirations for student learning.
The Council meets twice a month; bi-monthly on selected Thursday afternoons from 5:30-7:00 pm and six Thursdays of the year for a Town-Gown meeting from 5:00-7:30. Since the primary purpose of the Student Life Council is advisory, there is minimal time commitment beyond the required meetings described above. Council members, however, will be frequently informed of optional activities where student input is needed. Students interested in serving on the 2022-2023 Student Life Council should submit an application via GobblerConnect. The application deadline is April 18, 2022. Interviews will happen between April 19th and April 22; decisions will be sent out by April 27th. Students must be in good standing with Virginia Tech and the application involves a check of academic and conduct standing. Interested students must have a robust interest in strengthening campus life at Virginia Tech, and commit to being available during the times outlined above for a period between August 2022 and May 2023. 26. VIRGINIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM FOR 2022-2023 – 1st posting
The Office of Government and Community Relations seeks a student interested in state government and policy for the Virginia General Assembly Fellowship program. The Fellowship is targeted at students who have an interest in state government and policy as the Fellow works in the Office of Government and Community Relations during both the fall and spring semesters. During the fall semester, the Fellow has a regular assistantship based in Blacksburg and is expected to make occasional trips to Richmond. During the spring semester, the Fellow serves in a full time role based in Richmond during the legislative session in order to monitor and participate in the activities of the General Assembly. After the session, the Fellow returns to Blacksburg to help with end of session wrap up items. The student will receive a full assistantship and tuition waiver for fall semester and spring semester. During the legislative session, a housing and food stipend is provided to cover lodging and meals. Accessible Technologies, within Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies in the Division of IT, needs a Blacksburg-based Graduate Assistant (GA) to assist in providing setup, orientation, and support of assistive technology tools to students utilizing the AT Services lab within Newman library. 28. FULL-TIME GRADUATE ASSISTANT NEEDED IN CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING – 2nd posting
The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is seeking a graduate student with strong organization and communication skills as well as an interest in higher education pedagogy. This graduate assistantship position will involve duties related to the planning and completion of projects and events, supporting center staff, conducting research and case studies, supporting teaching services, and other duties as assigned by the CETL supervisor. This position necessitates a mature and professional demeanor, a positive and approachable attitude, and the ability to communicate with diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students. For this position, strong written and oral communication skills are required. Successful candidates will be able to work both independently and in a team, have strong organizational skills, and be flexible. This is a 9-month Graduate Assistant appointment for 20 hours/week during business hours, in person on the Blacksburg campus. Each semester this graduate assistant will work with their CETL supervisor to agree on a schedule that accommodates class schedules and Center work time. 30. VT MEN’S RUGBY TEAM SEEKS PART-TIME COACH FOR 2022-23 – 3rd posting
The Virginia Tech Men’s Rugby Team is seeking a part-time, paid, Head Coach for the 2022-23 school year. A proud member of the Chesapeake Collegiate Rugby Athletic Conference, we are a nationally-ranked, non-varsity sport club (advised by the Department of Recreational Sports) that competes in the fall and spring semesters against programs including Clemson, UVa, JMU, the U.S. Naval Academy, Maryland, and NC State, among others. Our team is comprised of approximately 70 dedicated student-athletes who are members of both our 15’s and 7’s teams. In December, our 15’s team achieved a milestone by defeating West Chester University in Houston, Texas for the Collegiate Ruby National Championship. We are looking for a coach (or coaches) who can help provide our team with skill development, training and match preparation. The EchoLab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals that are eligible for a user study that involves creating voice memos for a system that summarizes and organizes voice memos in a hierarchical structure. 33. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A CONSUMER STUDY ON HARD CIDER – 1st posting
The Sensory Evaluation Laboratory (SEL) at Virginia Tech seeks participants to evaluate hard cider (IRB 22-220). The study will take place on Thursday and Friday (April 21 and 22) from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm. The study will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. To participate in this study, you must be 21+, have previously consumed alcohol, not be allergic to apples, cider, alcohol, or fermented beverages, vaccinated against COVID-19, and not currently pregnant. Panelists will taste 8 hard cider samples. The purpose of this study is to understand how different processing methods influence consumer preference of Virginia hard ciders. The VT Sensory Evaluation Lab (VT SEL) is conducting TWO cotton candy taste tests April 19-22 from 11am-4pm. 35. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY MEASURING BALANCE ON LADDERS – 2nd posting
Subjects are needed for a Virginia Tech research study measuring balance on ladders (IRB# 22-089). The purpose of this study is to measure balance during simulated construction work on a ladder. This information will be useful in reducing the risk of falls off ladders. Participants will be asked to complete one session lasting approximately 2 hours. During this session, participants will be asked to climb a ladder and simulate construction work while we measure your balance. There is a chance you might fall off the ladder, but we have rock climbing pads to cushion any fall. Participants are eligible to participate if you: are 18-35 years old; are not heavier than 220 pounds; are not taller than 5 ft 10 in ; do not wear glasses (contacts are acceptable). The Embodied Brain Lab at Virginia Tech investigates how mind-body-movement practices affect brain function and physiology. The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study to determine the effects of in-vehicle agents on driver experiences and performance in an autonomous vehicle. During the study, you will be asked to drive in a driving simulator. Criteria for eligibility are 1) active driver with a valid license, 2) age 18+ with good health, and 3) normal or corrected vision and hearing. The study will last approximately 60 minutes. A theater organization (Superhero Clubhouse) from New York City is coming to Virginia Tech to hold a three-day eco theater workshop. This will be a creative workshop for people of all backgrounds, occupations, and levels of experience to collaboratively respond to climate and environmental crises through guided performance-making. Beginning with a presentation of research and culminating in short performances made by participants. The workshop is an accessible introduction to SuperheroClubhouse’s eco-theater pedagogy, offering tools to explore the complexities of the climate crisis and envision alternative futures through personal and collective expression.
