9. CALL FOR COMSCICON CONFERENCE ORGANIZERS – 1st posting
Are you passionate about communicating science? ComSciCon VT, an annual communicating science conference put on by graduate students for graduate students, is recruiting for members of the organizing committee. Committee members will work together to plan and implement ComSciCon VT 2020, which will take place on Feb 27 and 28. This year’s theme is “Inclusion, Diversity, and Accessibility in Science Communication.” This is a great opportunity to get conference planning and leadership experience, including roles in fundraising, sponsorship, hospitality, and session planning. 11. ANNUAL ONE HEALTH CASE COMPETITION – 1st posting
The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) One Health Working Group will be hosting the Annual One Health Case Competition Saturday, Nov 2 in celebration of International One Health Day. Winning teams will receive Amazon gift cards ($25-50 each), and all participants will receive a gift bag of One Health goodies. Teams compete to solve cases using a One Health approach, testing knowledge of infectious diseases, environmental toxins, infection control and prevention, and emergency preparedness and response! The case competition will be held from 9:00am to 2:30pm at VMCVM. Breakfast and lunch provided. Sign-up as an individual, a partial team (2-3 people) or a full team (4 people). Virginia Tech is deeply committed to finding new ways to support the university community and its childcare and early childhood education needs. Please share your feedback in a new childcare needs survey at this link or copy the link below. Input will be used to expand analysis and decision-making around childcare for employees and graduate students. The survey will also build upon the dedicated work of the university’s childcare working group made up of representatives from across the university. The first Virginia Tech Latinx Symposium will take place on Friday, Oct 25 in the Squires Student Center Old Dominion Ballroom. 17. VMCVM’S TRUNK OR TREAT LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS – 3rd posting
We are hosting the second annual VMCVM will hold its second annual Trunk or Treat on Oct 30. This event is open to the public, from 5:00 to 7:00pm in the Vet Med parking lot (205 Duck Pond Drive) and provides a safe and fun place for local families and children to trick or treat. VT organizations and clubs are needed to host a trunk to hand out candy to the trick or treating children. Each club or organization may decorate their trunk and a gift card will go to the best decorated car! Each organization must provide their own candy to hand out but there will be extra candy to replenish as needed. Parking services will waive tickets in the Vet Med parking lot starting at 4:30pm, so cars with a current parking pass may park there early to get set up. The Granata Biomechanics Lab is studying the impact of race and related factors on movement mechanics. This low-risk study will involve two testing sessions (approximately 30 minutes and 90 minutes in length). You will receive a total of $20 in compensation for your participation in this study. To be eligible for the study you must meet the following criteria: (1) be between 18 and 30 years old, (2) self-identify as African-American or white American, (3) can walk without an assistive device, and (4) have not had a lower extremity injury in the past 3 months that limited your physical activity for more than 2 days. Diwali, is the festival of lights and one of the most important festivals in the Indian calendar, signifying the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. Enjoy the Cultural Show in Haymarket Theater, Squires, demonstrating various artistic talents of the Indian culture and the student body at VT (4:45-7:30pm). Afterwards, there will be fireworks on the Drillfield (7:45-8:00pm), and a Diwali Dinner buffet in the Commonwealth Ballroom, Squires (8:00-9:30pm).
