4. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A HUMAN FACTORS PROFESSIONAL

The guest speaker will be Mikayla Ferchaw, a Senior Human Factors Engineer at Bayer. Mikayla first joined Bayer in 2015, working as an intern in the manufacturing/automation engineering and product supply/supply chain groups while a student at Pitt. She joined Device R&D in 2017 after earning a B.S. in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh.  Since graduating from Pitt, Mikayla earned a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Human Factors Engineering & Ergonomics at Pennsylvania State University in 2019 and is currently working on a Masters of Engineering in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Pennsylvania State University (intending to complete it in August 2022). In addition to her current role, Mikayla is passionate about developing a consistent training model for incoming talent, community outreach (especially when related to STEM), and, last but not least, benchmarking with other industry professionals for innovative ways to conduct usability evaluations. Hear Dr. Iwan Jenkins answer this question in a presentation open to grad students.  Dr. Jenkins (PhD, Chemistry, University of Liverpool) is an international executive coach from Toronto, Canada.  He has used A-I theory and the KAI to link business strategy (Problem A) with leadership (Problem B) in at least 40 countries over the past 25 years. He spent the first 20 years of his career helping blue chip companies around the world hone their strategies, marketing and sales efforts, and mergers and acquisitions tactics. He started his own coaching and consulting business 20 years ago, where he continues to help executives in Fortune 500 companies understand and apply diversity and cognitive style for greater insight, respect, and success.

Specifically, this position will support the coordination and development of the Black Male Excellence Network (BMEN). 24. VT MEN’S RUGBY TEAM SEEKS PART-TIME COACH FOR 2022-23 – 1st posting
The Virginia Tech Men’s Rugby Team is seeking a part-time, paid, Head Coach for the 2022-23 school year.  A proud member of the Chesapeake Collegiate Rugby Athletic Conference, we are a nationally-ranked, non-varsity sport club (advised by the Department of Recreational Sports) that competes in the fall and spring semesters against programs including Clemson, UVa, JMU, the U.S. Naval Academy, Maryland, and NC State, among others.  Our team is comprised of approximately 70 dedicated student-athletes who are members of both our 15’s and 7’s teams.  In December, our 15’s team achieved a milestone by defeating West Chester University in Houston, Texas for the Collegiate Ruby National Championship.  We are looking for a coach (or coaches) who can help provide our team with skill development, training and match preparation.  If you are interested in learning more about our team and this opportunity, please email us at virginiatechmensrugby@gmail.com

The Graduate School is looking for a full-time graduate student to support the operation and initiatives of the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) during the 2022-23 academic year. This FT 9-month GA position begins in Aug; some summer wage hours are available. Primary duties include providing administrative and logistical support for GPSS operations, assisting with small- and large-scale event planning and execution, and assisting GPSS leaders with tasks related to their positions. 31. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED: RESEARCH STUDY – EFFECTS OF INTELLIGENT VOICE AGENTS IN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES – 1st posting
The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study to determine the effects of in-vehicle agents on driver experiences and performance in an autonomous vehicle. During the study, you will be asked to drive in a driving simulator. Criteria for eligibility are 1) active driver with a valid license, 2) age 18+ with good health, and 3) normal or corrected vision and hearing. The study will last approximately 60 minutes. 33. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH ON IMMERSIVE EMBODIMENT FOR TRANSGENDER EDUCATION -2nd posting
Our goal is to develop an immersive experience to educate people on transgender individuals’ experiences and challenges. To participate in this study, it is required that you are at least 18 years old and identify yourself as a transgender individual. The study consists of a survey and an optional interview. The survey will ask about your experiences and challenges of being transgender. Some questions will collect demographic information. At the end of the survey, you may opt-in for a follow-up interview. Participation is voluntary and all responses that you provide will be kept confidential and you have the option to remain anonymous. The survey will take approx. 7-8 minutes to complete. 34. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VR EXPERIMENT – 2nd posting
The Reality Design Studio at Virginia Tech is seeking volunteers to take part in a VR experiment. We are investigating locomotion techniques in VR. You will be asked to complete questionnaires and play through levels where you will attempt to dodge turret fire, collect grabbable coins, and kill enemies while attempting to be hit as little as possible. The research study will take place in either Room 160 (the Sandbox) or the Perform Studio within Moss Arts Center depending on availability of the room during the study. The entire session will take about 60 minutes. Requirements: 18 years or older, able to follow instructions in English, have perfect or corrected vision (lenses or glasses), do not have any known vestibular or neurological dysfunction. The Mind Music Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study to ideate and discuss the benefits/concerns of the use of a novel interactive VR system for experiencing art. During the study, participants will have a short experience of the proposed VR system, then discuss important factors as a group of 3-4 which will be video recorded. Participants need to be 1) 18+ undergraduate or graduate students, 2) with prior experience in Virtual Reality. The visit should last about 1 hour, and participants will receive $10 in compensation. 38. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BEHAVIORAL STUDIES ON COLLABORATIVE ONLINE CONTENT AUTHORING – 3rd posting
The Echo Lab is seeking individuals to participate in a collaborative writing (e.g., academic papers, project reports) study through which we aim to investigate the communication occurring between collaborators. Participants must be 18 years and older, can fill out a survey in English, uses online services, has written collaboratively with others, and can participate in the study across multiple sessions. Depending on the role assigned to you by the researchers, your duration of participation and compensation will change. For one role, duration be up to 240 minutes total: this includes a pre-survey, writing up two essay drafts, finalizing two essays, and filling out surveys after finalizing each essay. For another role, duration will be up to 140 minutes total: this includes a pre-survey, collaborating on two essays, and filling out surveys after collaborating on each essay. Both participants will fill out a pre-study survey as well as complete surveys after each collaboration, and a pair of collaborators will have a chance of winning a bonus ($50 or $100 for each collaborator depending on the role assigned by the researcher) if the collaborated essay is selected as the winning essay. We need highly active athletes (18-60 years of age) for a study examining the relationship between physical activity and total number of calories expended each day (IRB #21-567).Participants must be non-pregnant, vaccinated for Covid-19, with a stable body weight over the past year (±5 lb), and free of cardiovascular, lung, metabolic, kidney disease or cancer. We look for endurance athletes who was completed in marathons, ultra-marathons or Ironman triathlons in the past year, with sustained high level of training for the past 6 months and with no recent injuries or other reasons that have changed the training volume. 49. TECHNOLOGY AND THE PROPHETIC VOICE

In this talk we will examine Christian and secular writers who appear to make a similar argument: they claim that contemporary culture has gone awry because we idolize technology and in doing so have lost sight of crucial fundamental values. We will argue that there is good reason to listen to such thinkers, including Jacques Ellul and Theodore Adorno and Max Horkheimer, but also that such views bump into limits. We will also attempt to point to more fruitful lines of criticism and hopeful visioning, drawing on examples from Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus to Christian social activist Catherine Coleman Flowers’ battle to ensure the rural poor have access to functioning septic tanks and sewage systems.
