This workshop is geared toward learning the warning signs of distress, practicing conversation skills to support someone in distress, and reviewing resources that students in distress can access. 8. SCIENCE POLICY BOOTCAMP

The Virginia Science Policy Bootcamp is an annual statewide event that was originated by graduate students at the University of Virginia and is meant to introduce students across the Commonwealth to science policy and how it can impact their research and future careers! This year, the 2-day virtual event will be held Friday, March 4th and Saturday, March 5th. The event will contain six separate sessions between 10:45 am-4:30 pm EST Friday and 9 am-1:30 pm EST Saturday.  Informational sessions will include interactive workshops hosted by national science policy professionals covering the basics of science policy and common communication strategies and tools used to communicate with policymakers. Additionally, opportunities to engage your own research into the science policy world will be explored, from sessions covering active policy under consideration in specific fields, panelists describing their experiences with science policy fellowships, and local advocacy organizations actively recruiting current students! 9. GRADUATE STUDENT CLIMATE SURVEY LAUNCHING MARCH 15 – 1st posting
On Tuesday March 15th, graduate students across all campuses will receive an invitation in their Virginia Tech email to participate in the Graduate School’s triannual climate survey measuring students’ attitudes toward campus climate, department climate, advising, mentoring and inclusion and diversity. Virginia Tech is committed to creating and supporting a climate that fosters inclusion and diversity where all students can be productive and engaged members of our campus communities. 10. GPSS TRAVEL FUND PROGRAM WINTER AND SPRING CYCLE NOW OPEN– 1st posting
Have you recently presented at or plan to present at a conference soon? The VT GPSS Travel Fund Program (TFP) will partially support the monetary costs associated with presenting at conferences including travel, lodging, meals, and registration. Awards this year range from $300-$500 per person for in-person attended conferences, and up to $200 for virtual attendance. The Winter Cycle application will be open from Feb 21 to Mar 14 and is for conferences attended between Nov 1, 2021 and Feb 28, 2022. The Spring Cycle application will be open from Mar 14 to Apr 4 and is for conferences attended between Mar 1, 2022 and Jun 30, 2022. 11. 2022 COMMUTER SURVEY – 2nd posting
Virginia Tech students and employees are encouraged to share their feedback on transportation to, from, and within the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus in this survey: https://virginiatech.questionpro.com/a/TakeSurvey?tt=oQxEc274dPw%3D  The survey will address the following: travel to and from campus, satisfaction with one’s commute and experience with campus transportation programs and infrastructure. 12. FRALIN HEALTH SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATION FELLOWS PROGRAM – 2nd posting
The application process for the Fralin Health Sciences and Technology Commercialization Fellows Program for 2022 is now open. Up to five doctoral candidates, postdocs, or research assistants/associates who conduct research in STEM-H fields at Virginia Tech will be selected. The Fralin Commercialization Fellows Program is a part of the Health Sciences and Technology Division’s Discovery to Market initiative that utilizes Virginia Tech and other resources to assist with research commercialization. By the program conclusion, selected individuals must demonstrate their knowledge through a process of identifying a commercial idea, researching it with the support of a mentor, and presenting preliminary findings about the value proposition and market potential of the idea to a panel of entrepreneurs. Applicants are not required to have a commercial idea related to their research at the time of application.

VT has adopted a new survey data collection platform, QuestionPro, and will no longer provide no-cost access to Qualtrics after May unless your department purchases a license. To assist new users of QuestionPro (and those who want to move from Qualtrics), the University Libraries has developed a new self-paced online training module for QuestionPro, covering the basics of survey design, data collection and analysis, and moving from Qualtrics. 18. COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE (COVES) POLICY FELLOWSHIP – 3rd posting
The Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) Policy Fellowship is a science policy fellowship for Virginia that is hosted by the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (VASEM). COVES fellows are graduate students or postdoctoral researchers in science, technology, engineering, math and health (STEM-H) fields at Virginian Universities who spend 12 weeks over the summer working with Host Offices in the Virginia legislative and executive branches or in the policy offices of NGOs and scientific industries in Virginia. In addition to their work in their Host Offices, fellows are paired with a science policy mentor from VASEM, trained through an orientation at the start of their fellowship, and participate in networking and career development activities throughout the fellowship. ComSciCon is an annual science communication conference, organized by graduate students, for graduate students, that originated at Harvard University. The Communicating Science Club at Virginia Tech is organizing this local conference. During ComSciCon-Virginia Tech 2022, we will be hosting seven workshops focused on the communication of complex and technical concepts both orally and through writing to policy makers, citizen scientists, community members, and other audiences. ComSciCon attendees will meet and interact with professional communicators and build lasting networks with graduate students in all fields of science and engineering. ComSciCon-Virginia Tech’s kickoff event is on Friday, March 18th, followed by a full day of workshops and panels on Saturday, March 19th. 21. COMMUNITY PROJECT FOR THIRD-CULTURE INDIVIDUALS AND THIRD-CULTURE KIDS – 3rd posting
Third-culture kids and individuals are invited to participate in a community project focusing on exploring the meaning of home and belonging through cinema. Third culture individuals are those who grew up in a culture different from their parents’ culture or homeland. In the project, we will share our experiences and recommend a movie that represents the idea of home (a place, a person, or a memory) for the rest of VT community to watch. 22. SCOPING REVIEW WAGE RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION OPEN – 2nd posting
The Evidence Synthesis Services (ESS) at Virginia Tech Libraries are hiring a Scoping Review Research Assistant This is a great opportunity for students who want to learn more about and gain hands-on experience with evidence synthesis (e.g., systematic review, meta-analysis) methodologies! Scoping reviews aim to systematically collect, review, and map all available material that answers a broad research question – our methodology will be informed by PRISMA-Scp and JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis, Chapter 11. In this review, we aim to map the Influence of Contextual Factors on Risk Perception and Health Behaviors During Epidemics. As such, we are hoping to share this announcement particularly with students in life sciences, social sciences, and health disciplines. The employee will act as a second reviewer and will be required to work independently (with training) and contribute to weekly team meetings. This is a remote, wage ($13/hour) position. 24. GRANATA BIOMECHANICS LAB RECRUITING FOR HEALTHY WALKING RESEARCH STUDY- 1st posting
The Granata Biomechanics Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting participants over the age of 50 for a walking research study (protocol number 20-087). A compensation of $20 will be given at study completion. Study participation will only involve a single visit lasting approximately 1 hour. The study aims to look at knee movement during walking. Participants will complete questionnaires, three walking trials, a series of sitting and standing tasks and a balance assessment. Eligible participants will have no injuries in the last 2 months that have limited physical activity for more than two days and have no prior serious leg injury or surgery. If you would like more information about the study, please contact the Granata Lab at granata-lab-g@vt.edu or (540) 231-4294.

25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VR EXPERIMENT ON PEDESTRIAN SAFETY & ACOUSTIC SITUATION AWARENESS – 2nd posting
Researchers from the Mind Music Machine lab and the Human Impact Lab are conducting research on pedestrian safety for VT students. It will take roughly 1 hour to participate in the experiment.  Please note, it is not mandatory for students to sign up as a participant, and that their participation is completely voluntary. Participants will be compensated at a rate of $10/hr. GRANATA LAB RECRUITING FOR FIBER OPTIC ARM JOIN SENSOR RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
The Granata Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting participants between the ages of 18-40 for a wearable fiber optic arm joint sensor research study (Protocol 21-888). The goal of this research study is to determine the accuracy, reliability, and repeatability of a fiber optic curvature sensor (FOCUS) to measure wrist and elbow joint angles. Participation will involve two sessions that are approximately 1 week apart with a total duration of up to 2.5 hours. Participants will complete two standardized tasks while wearing the device and reflective markers. Namely, these are the Active Range of Motion (AROM) and the Box and Blocks Test (BBT). AROM will provide a measure of the maximum range through which you can actively move a joint, while the BBT is a common tool of upper limb dexterity where you will be instructed to move as many blocks as you can from one compartment to another in 60 seconds. Eligible participants will have no shoulder, elbow or wrist injuries or disorders that could limit their ability to move these joints. 28. COGENT LAB RESEARCH SEEKS DRIVERS FOR AN AUGMENTED-REALITY DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY – 2nd posting
This research will explore whether augmented reality head-up display (AR HUD) technology changes drivers’ ability to process information on the forward road scene and to respond to dynamic changes on the road environment. Participation in this study involves driving a driving simulator and perform secondary tasks using an AR HUD. To participate you must: Be 18 years of age or older; Must have normal vision. Eyeglasses and lenses are not supported in the study, Must be an active driver with a valid driver’s license; Must drive a minimum of 3,000 miles per year; Must not have photosensitive epilepsy.; Must not have any implanted medical device that is susceptible to disturbance by IR light and/or radiation; Must be comfortable reading, writing, and speaking in English. We need highly active athletes (18-60 years of age) for a study examining the relationship between physical activity and total number of calories expended each day (IRB #21-567). Participants must be non-pregnant, vaccinated for Covid-19, with a stable body weight over the past year (±5 lb), and free of cardiovascular, lung, metabolic, kidney disease or cancer. We look for endurance athletes who was completed in marathons, ultra-marathons or Ironman triathlons in the past year, with sustained high level of training for the past 6 months and with no recent injuries or other reasons that have changed the training volume. This study will require 1 virtual meeting and 2 visits to the Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory at Virginia Tech, which will take approximately 6 hours. 31. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED: RESEARCH STUDY – DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY ON AUDITORY DISPLAYS AT RAIL CROSSINGS – 3rd posting
The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study to determine the effects of in-vehicle auditory alerts on driver behaviors at Highway-Rail Grade Crossings (HRGCs) on driver response. During the study, you will be asked to drive in a driving simulator environment and react to in-vehicle alerts when approaching rail crossings. This project protocol was reviewed by the Virginia Tech Human Research Protections Program (#19-643). The eligibilities are 1) active driver with a valid license, 2) age 18+ with good health, and 3) normal vision and hearing. The study will last approximately one hour. Each participant will receive a compensation of $10 for participation. 32. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BEHAVIORAL STUDY ON COLLABORATIVE ONLINE CONTENT AUTHORING – 3rd posting
The Echo Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a collaborative writing (e.g., academic papers, project reports) study through which we aim to investigate the communication occurring between collaborators. We are seeking participants who are 18 years and older, can fill out a survey in English, uses online services, has written collaboratively with others, and can participate in the study across multiple sessions. Depending on the role assigned to you by the researchers, your duration of participation and compensation will change. For one role, duration will be up to 240 minutes total: this includes a pre-survey, writing up two essay drafts, finalizing two essays, and filling out surveys after finalizing each essay. Participants in this role will be compensated with an electronic gift card of $50 after participating in the full study, and will have an opportunity to be paid a bonus of $100 if their essay is chosen as the winning essay. For another role, duration will be up to 140 minutes total: this includes a pre-survey, collaborating on two essays, and filling out surveys after collaborating on each essay. Participants in this role will be compensated with an electronic gift card of $20 after participating in the full study, and will have an opportunity to be paid a bonus of $50 if their essay is chosen as the winning essay. Both participants will fill out a pre-study survey as well as complete surveys after each collaboration, and a pair of collaborators will have a chance of winning a bonus ($50 or $100 for each collaborator depending on the role assigned by the researcher) if the collaborated essay is selected as the winning essay. Tri-M lab is looking for participants to evaluate the user experience in a cooperative multiplayer game in VR. There’s no inclusion or exclusion criteria regarding gender, health status, and ethnicity. Participants will play a cooperative VR game with four different conditions- VR controllers (with and without vibration feedback), bare hands, and fingertip vibrotactile feedback.
Participants will be asked to fill out surveys to evaluate the usability, presence, and engagement within the conditions. It will take around 60 – 90 minutes and participants will be compensated $10.
