8. WINTERSESSION COURSE: EDHE 5984: SAFE IS INSUFFIECIENT -REGISTER NOW! – 1st posting
This course will engage in critical examinations of trans inclusion strategies in higher education from the position that safe and safety are insufficient. Students will explore concepts such as trans*ness, safety, allyship, inclusivity, and communities, in relationship to how institutions of higher education signal efforts for trans inclusion. This course takes a liberatory approach to imagine the potentialities for institutional and system dismantling of trans oppression. Students will engage in intensive self-reflective writings of their experiences in higher education inspired by readings to analyze limitations and potentialities for trans inclusive and affirming collegiate institutions. International graduate students who identify as women are sought for a panel discussion in honor of International Women’s Day to take place on March 1, 11:30 – 1:00 in Owens Banquet Room. The event is being called Our Bodies, Ourselves and will focus on sexual freedom, gender roles, sexual expression, sex education, rights/laws, and access to OBGYN healthcare. We are seeking 5 – 6 students representing different cultural perspectives. Panelists will be asked to share a personal comparative perspective on the gender challenges and opportunities they have experienced and are aware of both in their home country and here. Participants must be non-pregnant, vaccinated for Covid-19, with a stable body weight over the past year (±5 lb), and free of cardiovascular, lung, metabolic, kidney disease or cancer. We look for sedentary or regular exercisers, with no recent injury or other reason that has changed the daily physical activity. This study will require 1 virtual meeting and 2 visits to the Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory at Virginia Tech, which will take approximately 6 hours. 21. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR LIMB LOADING ASYMMETRY STUDY – 2nd posting
The Granata Biomechanics Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting participants between the ages of 18 and 35 for a single visit (1-hr) biomechanics research study (protocol number 21-747). This study aims to examine symmetry differences within an individual throughout different daily functional tasks. These tasks include level walking, standing up from a chair, and ascending and descending stairs. Participants will be asked to wear their own athletic clothing and will be provided with a pair of shoes (ranges between a men’s 6-11.5 or a women’s 7.5-11) that are compatible with our in-shoe force sensors. These flat and flexible in-shoe force sensors cover the bottom of each foot, pair via Bluetooth with an iPad, and measure the resultant force between the foot. 22. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RACE DIFFERENCES IN FOOT LOADING AND ENGAGEMENT STUDY – 2nd posting
The Granata Lab at Virginia Tech is looking for participants in a research study (Protocol 21-479). This research study aims to determine the impact of race and other factors on foot loading and research engagement. Once consented participants will complete three questionnaires and ten walking trials while barefoot. Participation consists of one visit that lasts approximately 30 minutes. Compensation is $10 for full study participation. Eligible participants will be healthy young adults ages 18-30, identify as either African American or White American, have had no injury in the past 6 months that limited physical activity for more than 2 days, have no history of lower extremity surgery, and must be comfortable walking without assistance. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY INVOLVING THE USE OF AI IN THE DETECTION OF DEFECTS ON INFRASTRUCTURE ELEMENTS – 2nd posting
Virginia Tech researchers in the departments of Structural Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering are recruiting participants for a research study. The purpose of this research study is to determine how the use of artificial intelligence and performance feedback can help remote infrastructure inspectors better analyze various infrastructure elements during an inspection. Participants, who need to be 18 years of age or older, will be helping to shape how AI is used in the future of inspections and will be compensated $15. The study should last roughly 2 hours. 24. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED: RESEARCH STUDY – DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY ON AUDITORY DISPLAYS AT RAIL CROSSINGS – 2nd posting
The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study to determine the effects of in-vehicle auditory alerts on driver behaviors at Highway-Rail Grade Crossings (HRGCs) on driver response. During the study, you will be asked to drive in a driving simulator environment and react to in-vehicle alerts when approaching rail crossings. This project protocol was reviewed by the Virginia Tech Human Research Protections Program (#19-643). The eligibilities are 1) active driver with a valid license, 2) age 18+ with good health, and 3) normal vision and hearing. The study will last approximately one hour. 25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR AN AUGMENTED REALITY USER STUDY – 2nd posting
The 3D Interaction (3DI) group is inviting you to participate in a research study with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. Participants in the study will come to the Moss Arts Center, and will be asked to walk around indoors while wearing an AR headset. Participants will be asked for their comments about some novel interaction techniques. The entire experimental session will take about 45 minutes. The experiment will be audio recorded for researchers’ further interpretations and analysis of user behavioral patterns. Participants need to be English speakers, at least 18 years old, have normal vision (contact lenses are fine, glasses are not supported yet unfortunately). 26. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY TO UNDERSTAND USER NEEDS AND EXPERIENCES AROUND CONTENT WARNINGS AND TRIGGER WARNINGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA – 2nd posting
The study consists of a survey and an optional interview. To participate in this study, it is required that you use at least one social media platform. The survey questions will ask about your experiences with different social media sites/apps and their trigger warnings, content warnings, and content moderation. Some questions will collect demographic information and the amount of time you spend on various platforms. At the end of the survey, you may opt-in for a follow-up interview. Participation is voluntary and all responses that you provide will be kept confidential. The survey will take approx. 15-30 minutes to complete. 27. ENDURANCE AND ULTRA-ENDURANCE ATHLETES NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
Highly active athletes (18-60 years of age) are needed for a study examining the relationship between physical activity and total number of calories expended each day (IRB #21-567). Volunteers needed for a study evaluating the effect of a 10-wk diet and exercise regimen designed to promote healthy weight gain (IRB # 21-561). Participants must be: 18-40 years of age, interested in gaining at least 5 pounds of body weight, willing to participate in a supervised 10-week strength training program, not taking medications or dietary supplements that influence the study results, non-smokers, not pregnant, without any major medical problems (including high blood pressure or coronary heart disease) and without any allergies to legumes, peanuts, nuts or tree nuts. 30. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON VIDEO CONFERENCING SYSTEMS AND VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS – 3rd posting
The Distributed Virtual Environments Lab (DVE Lab) is looking for participants to complete a study on presence and engagement in virtual environments and video conferencing systems. This study will comprise of a single session which will be held at 2202 Kraft Drive, Blacksburg, 24060. The study seeks to understand the differences in engagement, attention and the feeling of being “present” in video-conference-based and virtual-environment-based meetings. During the study you will be asked to perform three virtual meeting room tasks on Zoom and in Mozilla Hubs. Your participation will help us better understand the utility and the effectiveness of these two platforms in remote collaboration. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old and you must be a student at Virginia Tech. Participation is voluntary and all responses that you provide will be kept confidential. You will be provided with a $10 Amazon gift card as compensation for your participation in this study. 31. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH ON AUGMENTED REALITY STORYTELLING – 3rd posting
An interdisciplinary team from the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology at Virginia Tech is looking for participants for an Augmented Reality (AR) study that aims to better understand multi-user experiences in AR storytelling. In the study, you will wear the Microsoft HoloLens AR headset to experience three narrative stories. Afterwards, we will ask you to provide feedback. This research study will be held in The Cube at the Moss Arts Center and will take about 45 minutes (Nov 10, 11, or 12th). The study will include two participants, so pairs are encouraged, although not required. No compensation will be provided for those who complete the experiment. Your participation is voluntary. 32. PARENTS OF CHILDREN AGED 3-5 NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY – 3rd posting
The Learning and Development Lab in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at VT is looking for parents of preschool-aged children (3-5-year-old children who have not started Kindergarten) to participate in a new research study focusing on the home math environment of children with and without disabilities. Participants can choose to receive a $10 Amazon gift card if they meet the eligibility criteria and complete the survey. If there is a secondary caregiver at home they are eligible to be added to a drawing of a $10 Amazon gift card at the completion of the survey.
