14. SURVEY ON RESEARCH ETHICS – 1st posting
This fall, Virginia Tech will participate in the Survey of Organizational Research Climate (SOURCE), developed by the National Center for Principled Leadership & Research Ethics (NCPRE) and its partners. SOURCE is a validated instrument specifically designed to measure the climate of research integrity in academic organizations. The results of this survey will be used to evaluate and enhance VT policies, processes, and educational efforts around the responsible conduct of research, helping to foster an environment of ethical research and innovation at Virginia Tech. The survey will be conducted from September 13, 2021 to October 3, 2021. Starting September 13, NCPRE will send a secure link to the survey to all graduate students, faculty, and staff who are, or have been, involved in research at Virginia Tech. The Graduate Honor System is recruiting graduate students to serve as panelists who review the evidence and determine the outcome of GHS cases. 22. PARTICIPANTS WITH PERFECT/CORRECTED NORMAL VISION NEEDED FOR AUGMENTED REALITY STUDY-1st posting
3D Interaction group in the Sandbox, Moss Art Center, is looking for participants to take part in a user study. We invite you to take part in this research study if you are an English speaker of age 18 years or older with perfect or corrected normal vision (contact lenses are supported). In this experiment, the participants will be asked to access digital information in one of our two contexts: a) a solo context where they are reading a piece of paper, b) a social context where they are talking to someone else (the investigator, in this experiment). The participants will be asked to use one of our three interfaces (a smartphone interface and two Interfaces designed for wearable AR eyeglasses) to access information from a set of mobile applications. The study will be recorded for further analysis. We anticipate that completion of this study will take approximately 75 minutes. Participants who complete the task will be compensated $15 for their work. This study has been approved by Virginia Tech IRB (IRB #21-258). 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RACE DIFFERENCES IN FOOT LOADING AND ENGAGEMENT STUDY – 1st posting
The Granata Lab at Virginia Tech is looking for participants in a research study (Protocol 21-479). This research study aims to determine the impact of race and other factors on foot loading and research engagement. Once consented participants will complete three questionnaires and ten walking trials while barefoot. Participation consists of one visit that lasts approximately 30 minutes. Compensation is $10 for full study participation. Eligible participants will be healthy young adults ages 18-30, identify as either African American or White American, have had no injury in the past 6 months that limited physical activity for more than 2 days, have no history of lower extremity surgery, and must be comfortable walking without assistance. 24. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY ON THE REUSE OF FURNITURE – 2nd posting
The research is aimed at understanding the practices of local reuse of furniture and the role played by local online platforms in enabling reuse, so that functional products are not disposed of in the landfill. 25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH ON HARD CIDER – 2nd posting
The Sensory Evaluation Laboratory at Virginia Tech seeks panelists to smell and taste hard ciders (IRB 19-1067). To participate in this study, you must be 21 years or older and be vaccinated against COVID-19. This study has multiple sessions over several weeks. The purpose is to identify desirable (or undesirable) sensory attributes for Virginia hard apple cider and relate sensory components to consumer liking. This is a research study, and results may be published. When you participate in a sensory panel, you will receive snacks as a token of our appreciation after each session. 26. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BEHAVIORAL STUDY ON COLLABORATIVE ONLINE CONTENT AUTHORING – 3rd posting
The Echo Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a collaborative writing (e.g., academic papers, project reports) study through which we aim to investigate the communication occurring between collaborators. We are seeking participants who are 18 years and older, can fill out a survey in English, uses online services, have written collaboratively with others and can participate in the study across multiple sessions. Depending on the role assigned to you by the researchers, your duration of participation and compensation will change. For one role, the duration is up to 240 minutes total: this includes a pre-survey, writing two essay drafts, finalizing two essays, and filling out surveys after finalizing each essay. Participants in this role will be compensated with an electronic gift card of $50 after participating in the full study, and will have an opportunity to be paid a bonus of $100 if their essay is chosen as the winning essay. For another role, duration will be up to 140 minutes total: this includes a pre-survey, collaborating on two essays, and filling out surveys after collaborating on each essay. Participants in this role will be compensated with an electronic gift card of $20 after participating in the full study, and will have an opportunity to be paid a bonus of $50 if their essay is chosen as the winning essay. Both participants will fill out a pre-study survey as well as complete surveys after each collaboration, and a pair of collaborators will have a chance of winning a bonus ($50 or $100 for each collaborator depending on the role assigned by the researcher) if the collaborated essay is selected as the winning essay. 27. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VIRTUAL REALITY STORYTELLING STUDY – 3rd posting
The 3D Interaction (3DI) research group at Virginia Tech is seeking participants for a user study on learning immunology through interactive storytelling in immersive virtual reality (VR). In the main study session, participants will first play a storytelling-based VR learning app in an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset for 20-30 minutes, and then complete several questionnaires and answer a few interview questions to give feedback on their VR learning experience. To assess their understanding of the immunology concepts embedded in the VR learning app, participants will be asked to take three short quizzes (multiple-choices) before, right after, and one week after the main study session. The total estimated study time is about 90 minutes. The main study session will be conducted at a research lab in Moss Art Center. Participants will be compensated $20 after completing all activities in the study. The study has been approved by Virginia Tech IRB (IRB# 20-781). 39. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT WRITING WORKSHOPS

What do you value as a teacher? What teaching techniques do you utilize? During this two-part, interactive workshop, you will think about your teaching style and preferences, write a draft teaching philosophy, and provide feedback on a peer’s teaching philosophy statement. By the end of this series, you will have a completed statement for your portfolio or resume. You will also hear about services offered to graduate students from the VT Writing Center. Please register by Friday, October 1st at noon. You need to attend both workshops. We have space for 20 students, so please register soon!
