“Oxygen: Stories of Fire, Beer, and GuilIotine” It is hard to overstate the importance of oxygen on Earth; without it, we simply would not exist. In this interactive talk, graduate student Abby Lewis will demonstrate how researchers first learned about this critical element, highlighting a scientific process that was inextricably tied to the social and political climate of the time. A Ph.D. candidate in biological sciences at Virginia Tech, Lewis’s research focuses on how oxygen in lakes is changing in response to climate change and nutrient pollution, and how changes in oxygen may have important implications for the role of lakes in the global carbon cycle. 7. SUBMISSIONS NEEDED FOR ROOTS AND RESETTLEMENT MAGAZINE – 3rd posting
The Center for Refugee, Migrant and Displacement Studies extended the deadline for submission of poems, songs, visual art, flash fiction, creative non-fiction, and scholarly statements to be featured in a mixed media collection. The Roots and Resettlement magazine (see volume one here ) is an interdisciplinary collection about displacement, resettlement, place, and belonging. One notable submission will receive a cash prize of $500. The fall publication will be featured at the launch of the new Center for Refugee, Migrant, and Displacement Studies at Virginia Tech. 8. PEACE CORPS CAMPUS RECRUITER GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP – NEW DEADLINE – 2nd posting
The Center for International Research, Education, and Development (CIRED) at VT is searching for a graduate student who is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer to serve as the part-time Campus Peace Corps Recruiter (20 hours/week). The recruiter will be the main point of contact for people interested in joining the Peace Corps. Subject to the availability of funding, position will begin August 2021 and run through Spring Semester 2022. The successful candidate will receive graduate school tuition remission and a stipend. 9. VIRGINIA TECH COMPETITIVE CHEER CLUB SEEKS COACH – 3rd posting
Virginia Tech Competitive Club Cheer is actively seeking someone to fill our coaching position. We are looking for someone with cheerleading experience, either cheering for/coaching at an Allstar gym or cheering in college and coaching experience or experience working with students. Someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about cheerleading and over the age of 25, who is also NCA certified or willing to become NCA certified. 10. VIRGINIA TECH CREW TEAM SEEKS COACH – 3rd posting
The Virginia Tech Crew Team is seeking enthusiastic, dedicated coaches of any level (novice or varsity) to join its staff for the fall 2021 season. The VT Crew Team is a student organization based in Blacksburg, VA that has been operating for 26 years. After great recent success this spring and the promise for future excellence next year, VT Crew is looking for coaches to expand its rapidly growing program. Rowers at VT have experience ranging from novice to 8+ years. Responsibilities include planning and executing an effective training regimen in order to prepare rowers for a competitive racing season and collaborating with student executives to help ensure a well-run program. This program has a great tradition of creating a culture of hard work and dedication among the team. The team is looking to add someone who will strengthen the team in every aspect. The VT Crew Team will provide coaches pay, a travel stipend for regattas, and the opportunity to attend US Rowing coaching clinics. 11. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR EXOSKELETON USE AND BALANCE RECOVERY STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a research study (IRB# 21-329) about balance recovery with and without wearing an exoskeleton. Must be 18-45 years old with no recent or prior musculoskeletal disorders/injuries and no pregnancy (only for women). Will be asked to 1) perform a brief strength test, 2) perform balance recovery using a single step following a loss of balance, and 3) complete several questionnaires. This study includes 1 session lasting ~3 hours. The compensation rate is $10/hour. If interested, email Jangho Park at jhparkvt@vt.edu.

13. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VR HAPTIC GLOVE STUDIES – 2nd posting
The Mind Music Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a VR Haptic Glove Studies which investigate the effects of haptic glove on the sense of presence, engagement and usability the users. Participants will be asked to fill out the survey to evaluate the usability, presence, and engagement. Participants will play a VR game with three different input devices – Oculus Quest 2 Controller, bare hands, and VR Haptic Glove we devised. The experiment will take around 30 – 45 minutes and participants will be compensated with $10. Location is CRC Knowledge Work II, Computer Science Department, VT, 2202 Kraft Dr SW, Blacksburg, VA 24060. 14. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR YOGA STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are needed for a study on how yoga may meet physical activity guidelines. Research study conducted by Virginia Tech (#21-325). Eligible Participants: 65+ yrs old, No contraindications to physical activity; comprehension of English; Able to travel to Blacksburg, VA at In Balance Yoga Studio. Study will include heart rate monitoring and accelerometers (wearable devices that track physical movement) used during a yoga class. Time commitment: ~5 hrs spread over a 2 week time period.
