8. COMPETE IN THIS YEAR’S NUTSHELL GAMES – 1st posting
All graduate students are invited to compete in the Nutshell Games, 90-second presentations of graduate student research, at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, on stage at the Moss Arts Center. All contestants will receive professional video recordings of their presentations. Three winners will each receive a $500 cash prize. ComSciCon VT, an annual communicating science conference put on by graduate students for graduate students, is recruiting for members of the organizing committee. Committee members will work together to plan and implement ComSciCon VT 2020, which will take place on Feb 27 and 28. This year’s theme is “Inclusion, Diversity, and Accessibility in Science Communication.” This is a great opportunity to get conference planning and leadership experience, including roles in fundraising, sponsorship, hospitality, and session planning. 15. ANNUAL ONE HEALTH CASE COMPETITION – 2nd posting
The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) One Health Working Group will be hosting the Annual One Health Case Competition Saturday, Nov 2 in celebration of International One Health Day. Winning teams will receive Amazon gift cards ($25-50 each), and all participants will receive a gift bag of One Health goodies. Teams compete to solve cases using a One Health approach, testing knowledge of infectious diseases, environmental toxins, infection control and prevention, and emergency preparedness and response! Virginia Tech is deeply committed to finding new ways to support the university community and its childcare and early childhood education needs. The first Virginia Tech Latinx Symposium will take place on Friday, Oct 25 in the Squires Student Center Old Dominion Ballroom. 18. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VIRTUAL REALITY & AUGMENTED REALITY STUDY – 1st Posting
This study makes use of state-of-the-art VR and AR technologies such as the HTC Vive Pro and Microsoft HoloLens. Study will take place at the Sandbox, Room 160 in the Moss Arts Center. Participants will be asked to complete interaction tasks in either AR or VR and asked for their comments about the different placements. The entire experimental session will take about 60 minutes. Must be an English speaker, at least 18 years old, and have normal or corrected vision. Participation will be on first come first serve basis. The 3D Interaction (3DI) group invites participation in an Augmented Reality (AR) study, conducted in the Sandbox, Moss Art Center. The study is about exploring the best ways to interact with digital content in Augmented Reality systems and will take approximately 90 minutes. Participants will get the chance to interact with state-of-the-art virtual reality equipment and experience futuristic methods of interacting with digital content. The Green Tailgate Team needs your help! Their mission is to encourage tailgaters to recycle their recyclable materials on home game days. 21. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A BIOMECHANICS RESEARCH STUDY- 1st posting
The Granata Biomechanics Lab is seeking participants to help us determine whether a novice user can learn to calibrate and collect data from a force sensing shoe insole through watching short training videos. Participation consists of 1 visit that lasts approximately 60 minutes. Eligible subjects will be ages 18-30 and have no specific training in research or data collection. The Granata Biomechanics Lab is studying the impact of race and related factors on movement mechanics. This low-risk study will involve two testing sessions (approximately 30 minutes and 90 minutes in length). You will receive a total of $20 in compensation for your participation in this study. To be eligible for the study you must meet the following criteria: (1) be between 18 and 30 years old, (2) self-identify as African-American or white American, (3) can walk without an assistive device, and (4) have not had a lower extremity injury in the past 3 months that limited your physical activity for more than 2 days.
