14. GLC HIKE TO TINKER CLIFFS

Join the GLC Fellows and other graduate students as they hike Tinker Cliffs, the third leg in the Triple Crown with great views of the Catawba Valley! Be advised, this hike is not easy going. You will encounter steep climbs and numerous switchbacks, so all hikers are encouraged to wear athletic shoes and bring lots of water. The hike is 7.7 miles round-trip and you should anticipate a hiking time of 4 hours. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) will be sending out invitations for membership this week. Please note this is a notable Honor Society that recognizes the top 10% of graduate students. Established in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the oldest all-discipline honor society. The Virginia Tech chapter is the 25th chapter, established in 1921.There are now over 340 chapters in the United States. Volunteers are needed to participate in a research study on the effects of occupational fatigue on balance. Participation involves 2 sessions: one 45-minute session and one 4-hour session. Must be 18-35 years old, have no musculoskeletal or neurological conditions that affect your balance or walking, are able to walk unassisted for 60 minutes, and are able to lift a 50-pound box. The Virginia Tech Food Sensory Lab is studying the sensory properties of cold brew coffees. Participants will smell and taste coffee samples, then “free-sort” them into groups. Participants will play an interactive virtual reality (VR) game that’s built upon the latest VR technology, including head-mounted display and hand-held input devices, and answer some questions about perception of the interaction.
