Graduate School Diversity Scholar Mohammad Habibi has assembled an exhibit of photographs of the Arbaeen Walk, the largest peaceful gathering on record with 20 million pilgrims from diverse backgrounds visit the Shrine of Ali ibn Hussain in Karbala, Iraq, to commemorate the values of justice, freedom and brotherhood that Hussain died for. Refreshments will be provided at reception.

Grad student Qichao Wang, President of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society Virginia Tech chapter, invites you to a distinguished lecture from TBP District 4 director Russell Werneth, an aerospace engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Mr. Werneth has been an active TBP member for over forty years. He was the ExtraVehicular Activity (EVA – astronaut spacewalk) Manager for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Project. He has been recognized with such prestigious awards as NASA’s Exceptional Achievement Medal for his work on the Space Shuttle Return-to-Flight effort and Hubble servicing missions, and the Astronaut Silver Snoopy Award for his efforts on the EVA-intensive Space Shuttle servicing missions to Hubble. 13. GLC HIKE TO CASCADES FALL

Join the GLC Fellows and other graduate students as they hike the Cascades trail to the 66-foot waterfall on the top, This hike is of easy-moderate difficulty and all hikers are encouraged to wear athletic shoes and bring lots of water. The hike is about 4 miles round-trip and should take about 1-1.5 hours one way. 27. CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION OPEN – 3rd posting
US citizen graduate students are welcome to apply to the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, a fully-funded intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program. 29. BUILDING MANAGER POSITION AT GRADUATE LIFE CENTER FOR SPRING 2018 – 3rd posting
SECL building managers oversee daily operations of the GLC by monitoring service, safety, and security of this space created for graduate students. Duties include walking rounds, responding to issues, and completing reports, in addition to the facilitation of the co-curricular and administrative programs of the student center services and their events. Directly responsible for event management bookings, opening & closing of the building, and submitting of facility work orders and daily reports. Must possess strong communication and customer service skills, and ability to move event equipment (tables and chairs). Currently looking for flexible staff members willing to work at least two shifts a week and have weekend availability. 31. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: STUDY ON SCHOOL READINESS IN PRESCHOOLERS – 3rd posting
The iLEAP Lab in the Psychology Dept. is conducting a new study focusing on school readiness in preschoolers, and the predictability of different cognitive development factors in monolinguals and bilingually exposed children. The study will comprise of two visits, 1 year apart. During this visit, a variety of tasks will be administered in play-like interactions, lasting about an hour and 15 minutes. Data will be collected again one year later. Looking for preschool children (about 3 years old) who speak English only, but especially for those who speak and hear a different language at home. Offers a $15 compensation at each session for filling out the demographic and language questionnaires. 32. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: STUDY WITH VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) TECHNOLOGIES – 3rd posting
A team is investigating the best ways to interact with Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, and this study compares various methods of interaction with virtual data and information.  Voluntary participants are needed for a user study entitled “View management and user interface optimization for wide-area mobile augmented reality” at the Moss Arts Center. Participants will have a chance to experience the state-of-the-art technology of Virtual Reality. The Center for Applied Behavior Systems in the VT Psychology department is looking for African American students at VT who would be willing to participate in research examining what cognitive factors are related to learning and performance. If you choose to participate, you will spend 90 minutes completing puzzles, knowledge tests, and cognitive tasks. Participants sought for a research study about lifting with and without wearable exoskeletons. Must be 18-35 years old with no recent or prior musculoskeletal disorders or back injuries. A height range of 5′ 5″- 6′ is preferred. Should be able to comfortably lift about 15 lbs from the floor to the waist height. Participants are asked to perform a variety of lifting tasks both with and without the exoskeletons. The training session takes about 1-2 hours and the data collection session takes about 4-5 hours.
