Mendeley is a free, easy-to-use citation manager that can help researchers save time and frustration. In this session, you will learn the basics of Mendeley, including adding references to your library, organizing your library, and using Mendeley to cite references within a document. 5. VT GRATE ASK-ME-ANYTHING ABOUT TEACHING DISCUSSION

This teaching workshop, sponsored by VTGrATE, is oriented toward first-time and seasoned instructors with an interest in learning now what you wish you’d known when you first started teaching! The workshop aims to inspire pedagogical conversation in the spirit of a Reddit Ask-Me-Anything forum. VT GrATE members will facilitate a discussion where attendees can ask anything related to course instruction or pedagogy and the facilitators will share their own experiences in the classroom.

Research a la Mode is a monthly venue for graduate students from different departments to come together and hear a talk by one of their peers. 9. SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATION ONE HEALTH DAY COMPETITION – 1st posting
SAVMA & the Virginia Tech One Health Working Group are excited to present the second annual International One Health Day Competition in honor of International One Health Day. Competition will take place at the VMCVM on Saturday, Oct 27, from 9:00am-2:00 pm. Participants from all graduate programs (DVM, DO, MPH, PhD, and all master’s programs) are invited to compete. Teams of four students, with at least three different programs represented, will develop plans to solve several different outbreak scenarios. Partial teams and individuals who sign up will be placed on teams by event organizers. Scenarios may encompass all aspects of one health, from zoonotic diseases, to emerging infectious pathogens, to natural disasters, to triage medicine in the face of an emergency. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team, and breakfast (Panera) and lunch (Qdoba) will be provided. Sign up at here, contact scavma@vt.edu with questions. 10. PROPOSALS FOR JMU LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, $250 TRAVEL AWARD – 2nd posting
The School of Strategic Leadership Studies (SSLS) of James Madison University seeks proposals from a diverse range of graduate level leadership scholars and researchers for the Leading Change: Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Leadership Studies Conference. Proposals can originate from any discipline but must have a leadership emphasis. Conference tracks will focus on leadership in a variety of organizational environments including psychology, business, higher education, nonprofit, community, etc. Conference takes place Thursday & Friday, Feb 21-22, 2019 in Harrisonburg, VA. Proposals can be submitted online and close Nov 1. $250 awards to cover expenses will be available to individual VT graduate students that apply. The GSA Travel Fund Program (TFP) will partially support the monetary costs associated with conference attendance including travel, lodging, meals, and registration. New this year: three cycles for faster reimbursement and streamlined application estimates. As such, the Fall Cycle applications (covering conferences from July 1-Oct 31) will be open October 8th-22nd. The VT Sensory Evaluation Laboratory seeks participants for a two-session research study about consumer emotional response and sensory quality of fresh milk & milk packaging. 15. HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND FAMILY STUDIES RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY – 1st posting
Seeking idividuals who identify as female, are over the age of 18, and in a monogamous same-sex relationship in which one person identifies as bisexual. Doctoral candidate in the Human Development and Family Studies Department at Virginia Tech is investigating the impact of attitudes regarding bisexuality on relationship satisfaction among female same-sex couples. This dissertation is a two-part study beginning with a survey at: https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8nQe5rRtzJmPqol . Both partners are asked to complete the survey separately, and can indicate interest in follow-up interviews at the end of the survey. Both partners will also be given the option to enter to win a $50 Amazon gift card for participating in the survey. 16. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR LIFTING STUDY W/ WEARABLE EXOSKELETONS – 2nd posting
Participants sought for a research study about lifting with and without wearable exoskeletons. Must be 18-35 years old with no recent or prior musculoskeletal disorders or back injuries. A height range of 5′ 5″- 6′ is preferred. Should be able to comfortably lift about 15 lbs from the floor to the waist height. Participants are asked to perform a variety of lifting tasks both with and without the exoskeletons. The training session takes about 1-2 hours and the data collection session takes about 4-5 hours. 17. PARTICIPANTS NEEDS FOR LOAD CARRIAGE RESEARCH – 3rd posting
Volunteers needed for study of effects of exoskeleton use on worker performance, health, and safety in manual material handling task (load carriage). Must be age 18-45 with no current or recent history of musculoskeletal disorders/injuries and physically active, engaging in regular moderate to high intensity workout (2-3 per week). Three experimental sessions (~2.5 hrs long for 1st, ~2 hrs long for the rest) are required to complete the study. Includes walking on the treadmill, both with and without several different exoskeletons. Several task parameters will be modified involving load carriage (with vs. without carrying a box weighing 20 lb) and walking speed. Compensation: $10/hour. The graduate leadership class in the Building Construction department is hosting a field day event to bring the community together and encourage kids to unplug from the screen by providing a platform for healthy physical activity and interaction. They are also beautifying Hand-in-Hand playground to bring awareness to planned playground renovations. Event includes face-painting and carnival games such as ring toss, egg toss, and knock down bowling. Field day activities include musical chairs, relay and potato sack races. Members of VT athletic teams will be present to kick soccer balls and throw footballs with those in attendance. Entry to the event is free, however attendees are strongly encouraged to donate canned food.
