2. WRITING STRATEGIES CONSULTATIONS
Every Monday, 10:30am-12:00pm, GLC Room A
Sign up through the Writing Center website https://www.lib.vt.edu/spaces/writing-center.html to talk about the dissertation or thesis writing process with coach, Prabin Lama (himself graduating this spring with a PhD in Rhetoric & Composition), who can help you with multiple topics– from setting an agenda (writing planning and preparation), to building a support system through writing groups and writing center services, to diagnosing and working towards managing writing difficulties. You are limited to two 1.5-hr (or shorter) appointments with Prabin per semester, (although you can always make a follow-up appointment with him in the Writing Center).

3. GRAD MINDFULNESS
Every Tuesday, 11:00-11:30am, 5071 Derring Hall
Meets every Tuesday (change from last semester.) At each meeting there will be a short guided mindfulness exercise followed by time to practice on your own. You don’t need to stay for the whole time. Wildfires eject huge quantities of smoke that is then transported to different places by wind currents in the atmosphere. When it reaches highly populated cities and combines with urban pollution, air quality becomes highly toxic for humans. PhD candidate Kannikha Kolandaivelu presents her research where she asks, “How can we use freely available satellite data and ground monitor data to look at travel pathways of this smoke?” A Research à la Mode Presentation. 20. “FROM BUCKINGHAM TO BLACKSBURG: GEOLOGY & ENGINEERING CHALLENGES ALONG THE CROOKED ROAD”

Bill Henika, Regional Geologist, has been mapping geology in the Appalachian Ranges of Western Virginia. Geology here is complex and can cause surprising surface effects. Recent landslides have brought public attention to the influence of underlying structures. Please join us for light snacks in the Museum from 6:00-7:00pm prior to the lecture. Admission is free.

21. “THE RIGHT OF WAY,” A DOCUMENTARY PLAY

written and directed by MFA student Thomas Murray, “The Right of Way” tells the story of Hector Avalos, who was killed by a drunk driver as he rode his bicycle home from work. This beloved son, fearless boyfriend, and devoted friend was taken in the blink of an eye. In the aftermath was a quest for justice. Featuring interviews with Hector’s family and friends and court transcripts, this immersive multimedia production will look at the evolution of our city streets over the last century. Who has the right of way? And how do we stop hitting and killing pedestrians and bicyclists? Seating is limited. Call for students and faculty to participate in panel and one-night exhibit to highlight women/non-gender-binary conforming electronic artists at the Moss Arts Center. 26. THE 2ND DISSERTATION INSTITUTE – 1st posting
The 2nd Dissertation Institute, an interactive workshop for underrepresented (African American, Native American, Pacific Island and Hispanic American) graduate students in engineering, will take place June 10–15 at the University of Houston. Will address issues that prolong completion times for those at the dissertation proposal preparation and dissertation completion stages of the targeted population. Institute is funded by the National Science Foundation and hosted by Old Dominion University and Virginia Tech. Will focus on skills and strategies needed to successfully complete the dissertation process and provide networking opportunities to build connections for future collaborative career advancement. Institute participants will build new writing habits, work on their dissertation or dissertation proposal, and learn skills that will help them continue making progress when they return to their institutions. 27. JOHN E. DOOLEY STUDENT ENGAGEMENT GRANT – 2nd posting
JEDSEG funds highly motivated students or student teams planning to implement or expand community-based civic engagement projects. This year, two awards of $750 or one $1,500 award will be granted. The grant recipient will be announced in mid- to late April 2018. Applications for the 2018-19 grant are due April 1 at 11:59 p.m. Applications must be submitted by a current full- or part-time student or student team at Virginia Tech. For student teams, a designated team leader must submit the application on behalf of the team. A student team can be an informal group or a Registered Student Organization. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply but applicants must be current students for the duration of the grant. Applications submitted by JEDSEG winners from the previous year’s cycle are not eligible. Proposed projects should be completed by March 2019.

38. VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE REGULAR MILK CONSUMERS SOUGHT FOR STUDY – 1st posting
The Department of Food Science and Technology Sensory Evaluation Laboratory (FST SEL) is conducting a study that investigates the effect of LED color temperature on consumer’s choice of milk packaging. In this test, you will be asked to select one milk packaging that you prefer from retail cases with different LED color temperature and complete one demographic survey. The sensory session will last approximately 5-10 minutes. Sessions will occur in the pilot plant (first floor) in HABBI (Human & Agricultural Biosciences Building I). For each participant, snacks (cookie, chips, candy, popcorn, fruit, and drinks) will be offered as compensation and appreciation for participation. Participation is limited to those 18 years of age and regular milk consumer (purchase milk at least once every two weeks). The participation is voluntary and confidential; you may withdraw at any time without penalty. Participants are requested for a laboratory study examining cardiac activity and perception. The single session in Williams Hall 158 involves collection of non-invasive psychophysiological measures (using EKG, 2 blood pressure finger cuffs, respiration belt) during standard laboratory tasks (questionnaires, heartbeat tasks, watching two brief non-stimulating videos, & a 5-minute speech in lab). Total duration: about 1 hour 15 minutes. Inclusion criteria: (determined by brief online VT Qualtrics screening) Age 18-24; No major health condition; No smoking/nicotine within the past year. 40. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR TWO AUDITORY SYSTEMS LAB EXPERIMENTS – 2nd posting
Experiment #1:  4 participants (2 male and 2 female) for an earplug test. New participants will go through a screen/qualifying session. It should take about 1 hour and will test hearing level–similar to audiogram testing done at doctor’s office. If qualified and willing to continue, participants will be asked to schedule up to 2 one-hour test sessions.  During each hour, hearing (at a low sound level) will be tested with and without earplugs.  Participants will sit in a quiet room and listen for lowest sound level that can be detect.
Experiment #2: 10 participants (5 female and 5 male) for an auditory localization experiment. Participants will be asked to sit in a center of a speaker array and guess the location of sounding speaker.  The sound level will not be high.  The whole experiment will take 10-12 hours and scheduled about 1 hour per day.  Compensation is $10/hr for either or both experiments. If interested or questions, e-mail vt.auditory@gmail.com .

This research is studying various interaction methods for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies.  Our team is investigating the best ways to indicate and mark targets of interest using VR as a simulation for AR. Participants will be asked to use these techniques to then answer questions and comment on their usability.  The experiment will be performed in the Sandbox (Room 160 of the Moss Arts Center.
