2. GLC CAFÉ: CUBICLE-FARM AND REAL TIRAMISU FACE-OFF
Thursday, Jun 15, 3:30-5:00pm, Graduate School lobby
Enjoy free coffee, tea, and cookies in the company of fellow graduate students and Grad School staff; network, socialize, relax! Bring your own mug if you can. The café will move to the Graduate School lobby and patio for the summer while the elevator is being replaced. Tiramisu face-off: blind taste-test the real thing as well as the cubicle-farm version and see if you can tell the difference!

3. CONNECT WITH FELLOW GRADS THIS SUMMER THROUGH SOCIAL EVENTS – 2nd posting
Many grad students stay in Bburg for the summer and may wish to connect to other grads through social events and opportunities. Book group meetings, pot-luck picnic suppers, game nights (in the GLC or at Rising Silos on Mondays), hikes and other events could be possible, if there is sufficient interest. 4. BILL ANDERSON FUND DISASTER DASH 5K WALK/RUN – 1st posting
Grad student Henry Smart invites you to this fundraiser on Wednesday, Jul 12, as part of the 42nd Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop. The fundraising team–The Pre-Mitigators, set a fundraising goal of $1,500, to go towards funding their experience as Bill Anderson Fund Fellows, including participation in a two-day intensive workshop in Broomfield, Colorado, and various workshops throughout the academic year that provide opportunities for professional development, networking, and preparation for the job market. 5. FULBRIGHT COMPETITION NOW OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2018-19 – 1st posting
The US Student Fulbright competition is now open for applications for the 2018-2019 academic year. Grants are available in approximately 140 countries for graduate degree programs, independent study/research, or English teaching assistantships. Awards cover round-trip travel to the host country, room, board and incidental costs, and accident and sickness insurance, with some programs offering additional benefits. 6. SUMMER GA POSITION IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION – 1st posting
Researchers in the Engineering Education Department seek a graduate student with an interest in engineering students’ early career development. Primary duty is qualitative analysis of interview transcripts; other duties include participation in qualitative team meetings with researchers from multiple institutions and literature review in the area of analysis. Must have mature and professional demeanor, and the ability to communicate with diverse groups of faculty and staff; qualitative analysis experience (knowledge of Dedoose software a plus); ability to work independently and in a team; and be flexible. Previous experience with motivation (e.g., EVT) frameworks, career pathways, and inclusion on IRBs is desired. Summer GRA, 20 hrs/wk, position.  Potential wage position in the Fall. 7. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR AUGMENTED REALITY STUDY – 1st posting
The 3DI group is seeking volunteers to participate in a research study with  augmented reality (AR) technologies. The team is investigating the best ways to interact with AR, and this study compares various methods of interaction with virtual data and information. The study will make use of state-of-the-art AR technologies such as the Microsoft Hololens. The project is supervised by Dr. Doug Bowman in Computer Science. 8. VOLUNTEER AT THE BBURG FARMER’S MARKET – 1st posting
Volunteers are needed at the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market to help run the information booth on market days during the summer. The market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays and shifts are three hours each. Wednesday, the market is open 12:00 to 6:00 pm and the shifts are 12:00 to 3:00 pm and 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Saturday, the market is open from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm and the shifts are 8:00 am to 11:00 am and 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Farmer’s Market is near Squires and the GLC. 9. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR DELAYED DISCOUNTING STUDY – 2nd posting
Volunteers needed for a study examining whether delayed discounting (do you want a small reward now or a larger reward later?) is related to health, diet, and physical activity level. Must be: male or female, any race and ethnicity; ages 18-65; Body Mass Index between 22 and 40 kg/m2; not trying to gain or lose weight; have not gained or lost weight in the past six months; willing to participate in two testing sessions of about 5 hours; willing to have your blood drawn, body fat assessed, an oral glucose tolerance test, fill out questionnaires related to diet and physical activity, and wear a physical activity monitor for 4 days. Participants will receive information, related to body composition, diet and physical activity level, and blood glucose and lipids (cholesterol).  The total amount possible for participation is $60. 10. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR OSTEOPATHIC ASSESSMENT AND MANIPULATION STUDY – 2nd posting
The Kevin P. Granata Lab is seeking volunteers for a study examining osteopathic assessment and manipulation. The study includes an osteopathic assessment and a biomechanical assessment; osteopathic manipulation and a second biomechanical assessment may also be included in participation. Volunteers must be between 18-35 years of age and have no past or current lower extremity injuries that required medical care.
