10. GRADUATE RESEARCH ON VIOLENCE PROGRAM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS – 1^st posting
The Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention (CPSVP) is accepting applications for the Graduate Research on Violence Program. The aim of this program is to provide graduate students support for conducting thesis or dissertation research pertaining to issues of violence. Proposals are welcome from students in all departments, centers, and programs at Virginia Tech.  The funded student is expected to be a full-time, graduate student in good standing, and the research/scholarship is expected to be grounded in the social sciences, humanities, or arts. Applications are due June 15, 2017. The Research on Violence Program anticipates making three awards in the range of $1,000 to $1,500. 13. INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM – 3rd posting
The Hume Center for National Security and Technology is accepting applications for its Intelligence Community Scholars Program. The IC Scholars Program is open to both current and admitted graduate and undergraduate students from any major. Recipients of these awards participate in the National Security Education Program (NSEP), giving them access to events and resources exclusively for NSEP members, while they conduct research projects related to the intelligence community or national security. Scholarships range from $1500 to $15,000 per year. Applications are due Monday, April 24. Applicants should be United States citizens with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Research and Informatics Division of University Libraries has a full Graduate Assistant (GA) opening (20 hrs/wk) for the 2017-18 academic year. Position reports directly to the data and informatics consultant for the sciences. 15. GA POSITION OPEN IN ACADEMIC DECISION SUPPORT – 1st posting
VT’s Academic Decision Support office is looking for a Graduate Assistant for Summer and Fall 2017 to assist with the SQL-Server apps. Required skills include SQL, with ideally at least an awareness of SQL Server Reporting Services. Additionally experience with JavaScript and ASP.NET, using C# or VB.NET would be great. 16. GA POSITION IN GRAD SCHOOL FOR 2017-18 – 1st posting
The Graduate School Student Services office is looking for a full-time graduate assistant (GA) to provide administrative and program-specific support for student services in the GLC. Duties include planning and executing orientation and educational programs, coordinating activities, managing communication, creating promotional materials, and assisting with other administrative duties as assigned. 17. STUDENT WAGE POSITION: ASST DATA ANALYST – 2nd posting
VT Enrollment and Degree Management is looking for a graduate student for a part-time wage position May 15 – Aug 15, 2017 to assist the Director of Enrollment Research and Analysis with enrollment data analysis projects. Ideal candidate would be a master’s or doctoral student in statistics, education research, or closely related field. Must haves: knowledge of basic quantitative methods for data analysis; experience estimating regression models using SAS or SPSS or R. Ability to conduct business-specific research, analyze data, and interpret results. 25-30 hours per week (negotiable); $15 – $20 per hour (commensurate with qualifications and experience). 21. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VTTI RESEARCH STUDY – 1^st posting
The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) is seeking drivers with a valid U.S. driver’s license who are 30-75 years of age and must meet the following criteria: drive one of the following types of vehicles: Lincoln, Cadillac, Audi, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Volvo, Tesla, VMW, or Mercedes, must be 2015 model or newer.  The project request two visits scheduled about a week apart. Session one is approximately 1.5 hours and session two is about 4 hours. 22. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY – 1^st posting
VT researches are currently seeking participants aged 18 and older for a research study involving making interactive decisions on a computer and completing surveys.  The study will take place in the VT Economics Laboratory in 2088 Derring Hall. VT researchers in urban affairs & planning and psychology are seeking participants for a pilot study on mood states in transport environments. Participants will install an Android GPS app called Daynamica (only compatible with Android smartphones), answer an entry survey, and use the app to track transportation mode, route, and distance of your daily travel. Upon completing each trip, you will be asked to report your mood with a brief survey. Must be 18 or older. Family participants are needed for a research study titled "Sibling Cooperation” in Human Development.  Family participants include (a) one sibling between the ages of 12 and 18, (b) one brother or sister between the ages of 5 and 18 who lives at home with the primary sibling, and (c) one parent or guardian. The Hume Center for National Security and Technology is accepting applications for its Intelligence Community Scholars Program. 3. RESEARCH A LA MODE PRESENTS: WHAT IS MOLECULAR PALEONTOLOGY?

An overview of the relatively new subfield of molecular paleontology, which uses cutting-edge technology to examine organic preservation in fossils, a new way of studying the biology of extinct animals. Caitlin Colleary will share the results of the research that she have done on melanin preservation and identifying color and color patterning in extinct animals and the work she is doing now for her PhD on protein preservation. Come for the talk and stay for free ice cream! Research a la Mode is a monthly venue for graduate students from different departments to come together and hear a talk by one of their peers. The main idea is to give graduate students an opportunity to practice communicating their research to an audience that is unfamiliar with their discipline in order to cut down on reliance on jargon and to simplify and clarify their presentation skills. Volunteers needed for a study examining whether delayed discounting (small reward now or larger reward later) is related to health, diet, and physical activity level. 22. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON HEALTH, DIET & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REWARDS – 2nd posting
Volunteers needed for a study examining whether delayed discounting (small reward now or larger reward later) is related to health, diet, and physical activity level. Must be: male or female, any race and ethnicity; ages of 18-65; Body Mass Index between 22-40 kg/m2; not trying to gain or lose weight; have not gained or lost weight in the past 6 months; willing to participate in two testing sessions (~ 5 hrs of time); willing to have blood drawn, body fat assessed, an oral glucose tolerance test, fill out questionnaires related to diet and physical activity, and wear a physical activity monitor for 4 days. 23. INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN STUDY ABOUT WEARABLE EXOSKELETONS – 2nd posting
Must be male or female; 18-55 years old; no current or recent history of musculoskeletal disorders. Experiment Details: participants will be asked to perform a simulated drilling task without and with three exoskeletons. Two experimental sessions (each ~3.5 hour) are required to complete the study. A Ph.D. student conducting a study about celebrity endorsement for branded food and beverage products in the US is seeking 40 male and female participants ages 23-36 who are US citizens, racially and ethnically diverse, including Latino/Hispanic, African and Asian American. The study involves completing three activities: celebrity recognition survey, celebrity picture card sort, and a post-card sort questionnaire, which will take no more than 60 minutes to complete. 25. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY OF MOBILE AUGMENTED REALITY APPLICATIONS – 3rd posting
The Information Technology and Security Lab is conducting research on augmented reality and its personal and professional impact on awareness of threats to cybersecurity and privacy. Volunteers 18 or older are sought, with or without technical experience who are willing to use both AR and non-AR mobile applications to perform investigative tasks and answer questions about their experiences. Tasks involve walking in and around Newman Library. The entire survey will take approximately 60 minutes. Volunteers are assured that personal information will remain confidential and will never be published in any way.
