Thesis Thursday is a weekly gathering of graduate students who want to keep accountable to a regular work time and need a guaranteed quiet place to work. Meet each Thursday just a few blocks off campus at 107 Church Street – 2nd floor of the State Farm office (entrance on Church Street). Free coffee and wi-fi provided, plus multiple spots to sit and study alone or in groups. Plus, there’s a lobby area to take a quick break or talk through a problem with a fellow grad! What advice do you wish someone had shared with you when you first started as a grad student at Virginia Tech? What little tidbit of information made your first year better, more successful, more fun? VT Parking and Transportation is offering a pilot program for the 2015-16 academic year for Graduate Teaching Assistants, Graduate Research Assistants, and Graduate Assistants who are in a salaried assistantship appointment position. The program will feature specific spaces in Perry Street Lot 3, and the yearly permit will be $284. The pilot will be offered as a lottery to students who have pre-registered by August 10th. A statistical consultant is available 1:00-3:00pm Monday through Friday when classes are in session to answer quick questions or to help with research projects requiring less than 30 minutes of assistance. 13. GA OPENING IN THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING FOR 2015-16 – 1st posting
The College of Engineering Dean’s Office is accepting applications for a FT (20 hrs/wk) graduate assistantship for the 2015-16 academic year. The GA will be working with the Learning Services Specialist on specific tasks and duties, including working with Distance Learning Specialist to implement strategies to develop a sense of community among off-campus students, update and manage website related to distance learning sense of community in the College of Engineering, create and maintain relationships with students off the Blacksburg campus, answer student inquiries- working in conjunction with the Learning Services Specialist. The GA will also have administrative tasks including liaising with University partners to facilitate student registration and enrollment, resolving student issues as they arise, working with VT staff on ensuring that courses are listed in timetable, and conducting market research analysis to determine trends in areas of distance learning. Participants are sought for helping evaluate a web-based knowledge assessment tool based on concept maps from the student user perspective. The evaluation can be done online and will take less than 1 hour. The evaluation tasks include: learning the online materials, registering in the system, logging in the system, completing three concept map questions, requesting the report, and completing a survey. 17. CHILDREN WITH FREQUENT TANTRUMS/TEMPER OUTBURSTS SOUGHT FOR TREATMENT STUDY – 2nd posting
Children ages 8-12 are currently being enrolled for a free treatment study for frequent tantrums/temper outbursts and chronic irritability. The treatment is designed to teach children to regulate their emotions, and will be conducted in 13 weekly sessions. Families will also receive $70 for completing assessment sessions for the study. 18. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR GEOSPATIAL DATA RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
5-15 participants sought for a month-long research study focusing on the question “how might we provide mobile users with a way to explore, interact with, and analyze their personal geospatial data.” Participants will be optionally given an Android device to interact with and visualize their personal location-based data and will be asked to complete one 15-minute survey per week for four weeks to give investigators insight on their use of the application. At the end of the four-week study, you will be asked to participate in a 30-minute interview and return the device. Participation is voluntary and all data collected will be confidential.
