2. SHORT STATS COURSES FOR GRADS: GRAPHICS IN R
Monday, Feb 23, 5:30-7:30pm and Tuesday, Feb 24, 4:00-6:00pm, 1080 Torgersen Hall;
The R programming package offers a powerful, flexible, and free platform which can be used to produce publication-quality graphics. Taught by Adam Edwards, this short course will introduce R techniques to produce several statistical graphs including histograms, bar plots, box plots, and scatter plots among others. Syntax to control colors, plotting characters, axes, legends, and labels will be covered, and users will learn to write high resolution graphics to the file type of their choice. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components. The lecture component will cover pros and cons of various graphics and approaches, and the computer portion will allow attendees to write, modify, and execute R codes to produce graphics based on these data. This session is the second part of a three-course series which assumes no previous coding experience in R or any other language, and is intended for researchers who want to gain basic exposure to R with the goal of incorporating R into their research programs. 3. FULBRIGHT U.S. STUDENT GRANT INFO SESSION

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs. During their grants, Fulbrighters will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences.  The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. 11. INTERSECTIONAL IDENTITIES SPEAKER SERIES: LENA WAITHE

Queer People of Color will host Lena Waithe to discuss oppression and activism through Lena Waithe’s lived experience. Lena Waithe is a writer/producer most recently known for co-producing “Dear White People.” She will speak about her experiences navigating her personal and professional life as an out, queer, gender-non-conforming black woman in the entertainment industry. She will engage participants in a discussion about visibility and the importance of elevating authentic, underrepresented narratives in mainstream media and challenging stereotypes and the status quo. 27. ADMIN GRADUATE FELLOW OPENING IN HONORS RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE – 3rd posting
The Admin Graduate Fellow serves the intellectual life and educational mission of the Honors Residential College (HRC) and University Honors. The Fellow will take an active part in the HRC and work closely with the Faculty Principal, maintaining a collegial working relationship with the Student Life Coordinator, student leadership, and University Honors staff. The Fellow will reside in East Ambler Johnston Hall, modeling presence; actively participate in the life of the HRC, including weekly dinner, Principal’s Tea, and other official College events; work 20 hrs/wk supervised by the HRC Principal. This work includes: organizational duties related to community events; administration of the College curriculum; coordination and leadership of the Apartment Fellowship and publicity for the mission of the HRC and official College events; organization and execution of programming for HRC Fellows; mentoring of Junior Fellows; and other duties as assigned by the HRC Faculty Principal. 31. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR AMBIENT DISPLAYS/TASK MANAGEMENT STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a 2-m long research study to observe the use of ambient displays for personal task management information. This study involves the use of an iPad to showcase your Google Calendar events and to-do list activities in an interactive visualization for your use. Over the course of the 8-week study, you will be asked to participate in surveys and interviews to allow researchers to learn about your use of our ambient display system. Upon completion of the study, an interview will take place and iPads will need to be returned. During the study, you will participate in 3 surveys and 1 interview per week, for a total of 24 surveys and 8 interviews. Upon completion of the 8-week period, you will have the option to extend your participation in the study to up to 4 more weeks.  Participation is voluntary; you may discontinue participation at any time. Information collected in all phases of the study will be confidential. 36. ADOLESCENTS (AGE 11-14) SOUGHT FOR PEER RELATIONS STUDY – 3rd posting
This study utilizes techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to assist adolescents (ages 11-14) who are dealing with problems related to rejection by peers. Participants will complete a series of psychological measures and five weekly intervention sessions, with some brief opportunities for at-home practice. There is slight risk to participating, given the sensitive nature of the subject matter and the time commitment. However, participants will be compensated for their time and participation and will also benefit by learning new coping skills. WORKSHOP FOR SCIENTISTS AND ARTISTS: MODELING SCIENCE, MODELING IDEAS – register now!

With vast improvements in quality and complexity of data in the life sciences, what thinking skills do we need to make sense of what’s there—and to make discoveries? Modeling brings precision and depth to the conceptualizations of biological processes, and embodied learning through "science choreography" catalyzes deconstruction and illumination of the core components and processes in modeling. This hands-on workshop, led by visiting choreographer and MacArthur "Genius Grant" Fellow Liz Lerman, is designed especially for mixed groups of artists (theatre and dance) and scientists.
