2. GRADUATE SCHOOL WINTER-BREAK CLOSING
The Graduate School will be closed from 12:00pm Dec 24, through Jan 4, 2015. We will reopen with regular business hours at 8:00am on Monday, Jan 5. While our offices are closed, international students with travel emergencies (for example, emergency travel due to a family critical illness or death) are advised to call 540-231-8486 and state their name and student ID number clearly, as well as the nature of the emergency and the phone number where they may be reached. Voicemail will be checked once a day between Dec 24-Jan 4 and an immigration advisor will respond to the emergency as needed. 4. REGISTRATION OPEN FOR PAYROLL DEDUCTION OF COMP FEES FOR GRAD ASSISTANTS – 1st posting
The registration system for paying comprehensive fees through payroll deduction for spring 2015 is now open.  Graduate students on an assistantship must either pay their comprehensive fees or enroll for payroll deductions by the payment deadline set by the Bursar’s Office.  To enroll in payroll deductions, login to Hokie SPA, choose University Account Information menu, and click on Graduate Students on Assistantship, enroll in Payroll Deduction. You must enroll in payroll deduction each semester in which you wish to take advantage of this opportunity.

Virginia Tech sponsors three Exemplary Academic Advising awards annually in an effort to recognize the outstanding efforts of faculty and the role they play in retaining students and developing an advising partnership. After the deadline, the nominee’s department head will be notified in order to solicit their support in submitting a complete dossier to be reviewed by the selection committee. 9. GSA SEEKS TRAVEL FUND PROGRAM VICE CHAIR – 1st posting
The Graduate Student Assembly is seeking a vice chair for the Travel Fund Program for the spring 2015 semester who will co-manage the program with the current chair. The TFP is a small grants program which partially reimburses eligible graduate students’ travel when presenting their research at conferences. The vice chair will receive a small stipend and excellent experience for their CV! The ideal candidate will be strongly interested in serving as the program chair in the 2015-2016 academic year. 10. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON CONSUMER SOCIALIZATION METHODS THAT PARENTS USE – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study on the ways in which parents socialize their child(ren) into consumer roles. Parents will discuss the ways in which they teach and train their children about spending and saving money, shopping, and the value of money. The study consists of a single interview that will take approximately one hour or less. To be eligible, participants must be a currently-married mother of a child aged 11-15 with whom they reside for at least half of each month. 11. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR RESEARCH PROJECT ON WORK AND FAMILY IN FAMILY BUSINESSES – 2nd posting
Researchers in the VT Department of Human Development are conducting a study to investigate work and family in family businesses. They are looking for individuals who are (1) age 18 and older, (2) in a romantically involved, committed relationship for at least 1 year, and (3) both members of the relationship are involved in a family business. Participation would include a one-time survey that asks demographic information and completion of seven daily diaries that take about 30 minutes to complete. Sheriff Jolaoso, master’s student in computer science, is looking for participants for his research on engagement with digital to-do tools such as calendars, to-do list apps, and email. Participation consists of completing a 22-question survey that asks questions about the digital to-do list tools you use and how you use them. Attend this information session to learn more about the Graduate School’s new Parent Cooperative Playgroup initiative, starting in January 2015. 5. DISSERTATION WRITING SUPPORT GROUP

Each coach will collaborate with his or her students to create individualized goals and educational plans for the semester, focusing on time management, use of existing campus resources, and problem solving. Coaches will also aid students in exploring majors and introduce them to the Pathways Planner tool. Responsibilities include: 1) Participating in training and/or meetings the week before classes begin (January 8 & 9); 2) Attending group meetings the week before and during week 1 of spring semester; 3) Scheduling individual meetings with students during weeks 3-4, 5-6 and 13-14 and assessing academic progress at each meeting; 4) Utilizing supplied materials and/or developing new materials; 5) Referring students to appropriate campus resources and advisors; 6) documenting meetings and communicating with program coordinator and advisors. 2. FINALS EXTRAVAGANZA

3. MANDATORY TITLE IX WORKSHOP FOR ALL STUDENT EMPLOYEES – register now!

The university is requiring that all employees and graduate- and undergraduate students in any student employment category complete a Title IX and Retaliation workshop by the end of January 2015. Although there are other ways to satisfy this requirement, the Graduate School has arranged two presentations so that you can become familiar with the responsibilities and obligations that you have concerning what to do if a student discloses sexual harassment, sexual violence (rape and other non-consensual sexual activity) or if an allegation of retaliation is made for having reported such activity. 11. GRA OPENING IN ADVANCED RESEARCH COMPUTING – 3rd posting
Advanced Research Computing (ARC) has an open graduate research assistant position for web development, beginning Spring 2015, to replace the current website (www.arc.vt.edu) with a Drupal-based CMS. The GRA will assist with transitioning the prototype site into production and integrating with other HPC web services; updating the website;  solving web problems. Must have strong written and oral communication skills; experience in the Linux operating system environment; expertise in web programming languages (e.g. php, html, xml); motivation to work in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment; ability to work independently on assigned projects. Sheriff Jolaoso, master’s student in computer science, is looking for participants for his research on engagement with digital to-do tools such as calendars, to-do list apps, and email. Participation consists of completing a 22-question survey that asks questions about the digital to-do list tools you use and how you use them. Participants must be over 18 and use calendars, emails, and/or to-do list apps to maintain things you need to do in the future. 8. WAGE POSITION IN ACADEMIC COACHING – 1st posting
Academic coaches working University Studies meet with 10-15 students 3-4 times per semester. Each coach will collaborate with his or her students to create individualized goals and educational plans for the semester, focusing on time management, use of existing campus resources, and problem solving. Coaches will also aid students in exploring majors and introduce them to the Pathways Planner tool. Responsibilities include: 1) Participating in training and/or meetings the week before classes begin (January 8 & 9); 2) Attending group meetings the week before and during week 1 of spring semester; 3) Scheduling individual meetings with students during weeks 3-4, 5-6 and 13-14 and assessing academic progress at each meeting; 4) Utilizing supplied materials and/or developing new materials; 5) Referring students to appropriate campus resources and advisors; 6) documenting meetings and communicating with program coordinator and advisors. 9. FT GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP OPENING FOR SPRING 2015 AND BEYOND – 2nd posting
Graduate assistantship for inVenTs Living-Learning communities (http://www.science.vt.edu/llc/) beginning Spring 2015; 9 or 12-m, renewable for at least two years; great opportunity for a natural-science-major graduate student looking for experience in STEM education and outreach; students with teaching experience and pedagogy training preferred; must be willing to be trained in large-equipment use  (MediaScape, 3D printer, laser cutter; microscope, milling router, ModelMaker). 10. GRA OPENING IN ADVANCED RESEARCH COMPUTING – 2nd posting
Advanced Research Computing (ARC) has an open graduate research assistant position for web development, beginning Spring 2015, to replace the current website (www.arc.vt.edu) with a Drupal-based CMS. The GRA will assist with transitioning the prototype site into production and integrating with other HPC web services; updating the website;  solving web problems. Must have strong written and oral communication skills; experience in the Linux operating system environment; expertise in web programming languages (e.g. php, html, xml); motivation to work in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment; ability to work independently on assigned projects. Preferred Qualifications: experience with Drupal; interest in High Performance Computing; knowledge of RESTful API design; experience with SQL databases (mysql, postgres); graphic design experience. 11. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR ONLINE SURVEY ABOUT COMPOSITION SKILLS – corrected posting
VT graduate students are sought to complete an anonymous, 5-minute online survey developed by a grad student in English about the transferability of writing skills learned during undergraduate studies in composition courses. Participants must be at least 18 and have completed at least one(1) composition course as an undergrad. This study examines how well university composition courses prepare students for working in their field of study, both academically and professionally, by providing skills such as: critical thinking, critical communicating, writing, and researching. The results from the survey will be used to assess undergraduate composition courses and how well they prepare students for their intended majors and professional fields. 12. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL EXPERIENCES IN STUDY ABROAD – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study examining lesbian, gay, and bisexual experiences studying abroad. The data gathered from this study will describe the overall study abroad experience of LGB individuals and investigate how well the study abroad office is meeting students’ needs. This will involve one 1-2 hours interview at a time and location convenient and comfortable for participants. All interviews are confidential and voluntary. Participants must be 18 or older; self-identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, though it is it not necessary to be out; and have studied abroad through Virginia Tech in the past five years.
