2. FREE ANXIETY AND OCD SUPPORT GROUP

Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety? Do you struggle with OCD? A free monthly support group meets the last Tuesday of every month. Join the group at the Graduate Life Center to learn more about anxiety disorders and OCD, hear success stories from those who have worked to overcome their anxiety and OCD, and receive support in an informal setting. 4. INTL STUDENT PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR PUBLIC HEALTH FOCUS GROUP

International graduate students are sought to participate in a 1-hr focus group regarding health issues and services at Virginia Tech. The purpose of the focus group is to identify key health concerns for international students at VT. Students will participate in an informal conversation about such issues, and results will contribute to the creation of a health-based training program to be offered in December. 9. NEW INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSE FOR SPRING 2015: WATER FOR HEALTH SEMINAR
GRAD 4514 Water for Health Seminar (1 cr; CRN 20121) is offered Spring 2015, as part of the Water INTERface IGEP and is open to any graduate students with interests in health, nutrition, environment, and water. Taught by Susan Duncan (FST) and Water INTERface faculty, the course will explore emerging nterdisciplinary issues related to the chemistry, biology, and engineering of drinking water; nutritional and aesthetic values of water and its role in controlling disease and promoting good health; methods of processing poor quality water to drinking water standards; subsequent changes in chemical, biological, nutritional, and palatability characteristics; implications for food preparation, processing, and safety and other consumer uses of water, and more.

10. GSA RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM – 2nd posting

The Student Engagement Travel Grant supports student travel to a professional conference or a professional development opportunity that promotes the culture of Ut Prosim at VT and furthers the scholarship of engagement. GLC Operations Specialists work closely with Building Managers for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC, Squires and Johnston Student Center. A doctoral student is conducting research to collect data on how people organize and remember their to-do tasks. For example, how do you remember to buy a ticket for an upcoming event? 15. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR NEUROIMAGINING STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a study designed to better understand how the brain works when trying to determine what emotion another person is showing with their facial expression. Participation involves in-lab appointment sessions, which include a brain-scan (fMRI) and an electroencephalogram (EEG). Participants will be compensated up to $75.00. Eligibility: must be male, 18-28 years of age; able to undergo MRI; have no known genetic, medical, psychiatric, or neurological conditions. 16. GU+MP SEEKING MENTORS FROM ALL FIELDS – 3rd posting
The Graduate–Undergraduate Mentorship Program (GUMP) is seeking mentors from all fields! This program allows graduate students to mentor undergraduate students considering graduate school. Undergraduates and graduates are matched according to their area of study, allowing the undergrad to get a taste for graduate school and to ask questions of current graduate students. Each graduate mentor will be matched with 1–2 mentees, who will shadow them at times convenient for the graduate mentor during the spring semester. Mentoring can help build leadership skills and provide an experience to discuss with future employers. Survey methods involve collection of information from people with a view of understanding a particular problem in a society. How and whom you ask and what you ask matter a lot in finding an answer. Taught by Benedicto Kazuzuru, this short course introduces statistical survey methods necessary to acquire and analyze the needed information in an objective way which would minimizes bias and errors in the final conclusion. The first part of this workshop will being with a discussion of the current reproducibility crisis in science, followed by a discussion of techniques, workflows, and tools (like R and Open Science Framework) that researchers can use to increase the reproducibility of their work. The target audience is graduate students, post-docs, and professors involved in quantitative research who are interested in learning more about reproducible practices. This study examines the current state of graduate-student understanding about academic integrity. Results will be used to better understand how graduate students learn about academic integrity, how it affects them, and what measures are in place to preserve academic integrity at Virginia Tech. Results of this survey may be used for publication. Participation is voluntary and anonymous; results from this study will be used to enhance graduate education. 6. SHORT STAT COURSE: SAS – MIXED MODELS

Taught by Dr. Michael Speed, this intro to mixed models uses SAS Enterprise Guide to analyze linear mixed models using PROC MIXED. Topics include analyzing data with random effects; learning how to determine what is being tested for the fixed effects; fitting random coefficient models; analyzing repeated measures data; and performing residual and influence diagnostic analysis. A case study will be presented to illustrate all of the concepts and procedures presented in the workshop. As part of the Global Academic Program at SAS, Michael Speed teaches classes for faculty and students and conducts research in linear models, generalized linear models, nonlinear mixed models, and data mining. The Graduate–Undergraduate Mentorship Program (GUMP) is seeking mentors from all fields! This program allows graduate students to mentor undergraduate students considering graduate school. Undergraduates and graduates are matched according to their area of study, allowing the undergrad to get a taste for graduate school and to ask questions of current graduate students. Each graduate mentor will be matched with 1–2 mentees, who will shadow them at times convenient for the graduate mentor during the spring semester. Mentoring can help build leadership skills and provide an experience to discuss with future employers. The PMF Program is a flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. Participants are sought for a study investigating the safety and health issues during order-picking using augmented reality technologies. Must be: 18-40 years old; no current or recent history (1 year) of physical disorder affecting shoulder, knee, lower back and ankle joints; no eyeglasses; exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times per week); must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. Participants will perform order-picking tasks (i.e., retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart and maneuvering a hand cart) using a paper pick-list and a Google glass.  During data collection, participants will be asked to wear a wearable motion capture system. WORKSHOP ON REPRODUCIBLE RESEARCH

The first part of this workshop will being with a discussion of the current reproducibility crisis in science, followed by a discussion of techniques, workflows, and tools (like R and Open Science Framework) that researchers can use to increase the reproducibility of their work. 1. SHORT STAT COURSE: DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS
Tuesday, Oct 7, 5:30-7:30pm, GLC Room G
When researchers properly design an experiment, they are able to control important factors associated with the outcome of interest, therefore collecting useful data that may provide strong evidence for causality. In this short course, presenter Ana Maria Ortega Villa will discuss the three basic principles of design of experiments: 1) randomization (to limit bias)  2) replication (to improve estimation of effects), and 3) local control of error (to reduce variability from known sources).  Participants will use two example data sets to illustrate the three principles and their application to two straightforward design scenarios, and enter and analyze the data in JMP, a software that can be acquired in Torgesen Bridge. This course is aimed for students with no design of experiments background and assumes that the audience is familiar with concepts such as hypothesis testing and p-value. SHORT STAT COURSE: SAS – MIXED MODELS

Taught by Dr. Michael Speed, this intro to mixed models uses SAS Enterprise Guide to analyze linear mixed models using PROC MIXED. Topics include analyzing data with random effects; learning how to determine what is being tested for the fixed effects; fitting random coefficient models; analyzing repeated measures data; and performing residual and influence diagnostic analysis. A case study will be presented to illustrate all of the concepts and procedures presented in the workshop. As part of the Global Academic Program at SAS, Michael Speed teaches classes for faculty and students and conducts research in linear models, generalized linear models, nonlinear mixed models, and data mining. WORKSHOP ON REPRODUCIBLE RESEARCH

The first part of this workshop will being with a discussion of the current reproducibility crisis in science, followed by a discussion of techniques, workflows, and tools (like R and Open Science Framework) that researchers can use to increase the reproducibility of their work. The target audience is graduate students, post-docs, and professors involved in quantitative research who are interested in learning more about reproducible practices.
