2. MEDITATION SESSION

This event is an introduction to meditation and guided meditation would be provided by the instructors. 3. FREE ANXIETY AND OCD SUPPORT GROUP – Last meeting for this semester!

Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety? Do you struggle with OCD? A free monthly support group meets the last Tuesday of every month. Please join the group at the VT Psychological Services Center (3110 Prices Fork Road, directly across the road from Blacksburg Middle School) to learn more about anxiety disorders and OCD, hear success stories from those who have worked to overcome their anxiety and OCD, and receive support in an informal setting. 4. SCHOLAR-ACTIVISM ROUNDTABLE

5. CONFLICT RESOLUTION WORKSHOP

This workshop is organized as part of a diversity scholar project with the main objectives of helping participants understand (1) culture from an individualist and collectivist perspective (2) culture from masculine and feminine perspective (3) cultural communications such as indirect vs. direct approaches (4) the impact of avoiding and yielding in conflict situations. 8. HONOR SYSTEM SEARCH FOR CHIEF JUSTICE NOW OPEN – 2nd posting
The Graduate Honor System is searching for a new chief justice due to the impending graduation of the current chief justice, Jordan Booker. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• must be a graduate student in good standing who has been in residence for a minimum of one semester
• be able to serve as Chief Justice for at least one year while enrolled full-time in the Blacksburg campus.

10. GLC FELLOW POSITION OPEN FOR 2014-2015 – 1st posting

11. GLC WAGE POSITION OPEN FOR STUDENT BUILDING MANAGER – 1st posting
The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Operations Manager for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. This includes providing excellent customer service, overall building management, reserving rooms, oversight of the welcome center, basic cleaning (wiping tables, vacuuming, etc.) and administrative support. The Student Building Manager has primary responsibility, including emergency response, for the building during evening and weekend hours. 12. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR GAIT STUDY – 1st posting
Research subjects are needed for a study investigating balance and gait in the Kevin P. Granata Lab in Norris Hall. 13. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR DIET AND MUSCLE METABOLISM STUDY – 1st posting
Volunteers are needed for a study examining how diet influences muscle metabolism. Must be: non-smoking males between ages 18-40; not currently taking any medications; without any major medical problems; willing to eat a high fat diet for 5 days. 14. FOCUS GROUP PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON MARRIED ADULTS – 1st posting
Participants are sought for a focus group concerning married adults’ perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes about seeking treatment from a marriage and family therapist for them and their partner. If you are married and at least 18, you are invited to participate in one of two focus groups. Participation is confidential. Schedule: (1)  Saturday 5/3/2014 1:00-2:30pm; (2) Saturday 5/10/2014 1:00-2:30pm, held at the Family Therapy Center of Virginia Tech. Refreshments will be provided and all participants will receive $30 cash for their time. This research study has received VT IRB approval. 15. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DECISION-MAKING STUDY – 1st posting
VT researchers seek study participants to help determine how people process information. Participants will be asked to play simple computer games using the keyboard and mouse in a two-hour experiment session. Participants will get $5 compensation for their time and $5 for completing a survey with the opportunity to receive up to an additional $25, based on performance on research tasks, depending on the outcome of choices made by all participants.  If you decide to take part in this study, you may be asked to view a variety of pictures that have been categorized to be pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant. 16. GOLF CULTURE SURVEY – 1st posting
In an effort to advance the services and convenience of golf opportunities at Virginia Tech, the VT Foundation is conducting a research study with students, faculty, and staff. Your input can help evaluate the golf culture at VT that will guide operations and policies. The survey will take 4-5 minutes to complete. 18. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR LOAD CARRIAGE STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are needed for a VT study investigating different load carriage methods on flat and inclined surfaces, and how these methods influence injury risk. The study (IRB # 14-347) consists of one session for about 3 hours. Requirements: male or female, 18-60 years of age, with no recent history of balance disorders, concussions, musculoskeletal injury in the past affecting normal walking or turning. 19. SURVEY PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON LIFE SCIENCE COMMUNITIES – 3rd posting
Researchers are working to define how best to support community knowledge sharing in life science online resources; from sharing data within a small group of colleagues to sharing expertise and opinions across broader biological science communities. Preferred participants are familiar with web applications for biological scientists (e.g., NCBI, PubMed) and/or bioinformatics tools. The survey should not take more than 15 minutes and participants will be entered in a raffle for one of twelve $25 Amazon gift cards. Researchers are recruiting adults (men and women 18 and older) for a study on emotional responses to better understand the relationship between empathy, emotion regulation, and helping behaviors. 21. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR LUMBAR SPINE STUDY  –  3rd posting
The VT Industrial Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory will conduct a study examining the mechanics of the lumbar spine in healthy adults. Participants will work with a research assistant to twist and bend the subject’s torso within the limits of daily living. The study requires a single experimental session that lasts for 2-3 hours.  Participating subjects will be compensated $10/hr for their time. Subjects 25 years and older are preferred, but subjects over 18 will be considered. Subjects must not suffer from any systemic inflammatory condition or any other series medical condition, or have a history of a spinal disorder, spinal fracture, or spinal surgery. 4. GRADS SOUGHT FOR FOCUS GROUP FOR “FOOD SECURITY” COURSE DEVELOPMENT – sign up now

The Appalachian Foodshed Project (AFP) is working with communities, farmers, policymakers, non-profits, and institutions to better understand community food security in Appalachia.  Faculty involved with the AFP are planning a graduate-level Community Food Security Course to be offered to any graduate student interested in this topic from both a practitioner and scholarly perspectives.  To ensure this course meets student needs, your input is needed! For example:  What do you know about food security?  What do you want to know? What information do you need for a future career? There will be two focus groups for graduate students to discuss how the upcoming course should be designed. Your participation will help with the design of course content, course activities and assessment techniques. Participants in the 90-min focus group will be provided with dinner prior to the meeting. The VT Industrial Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory will conduct a study examining the mechanics of the lumbar spine in healthy adults. VT researchers are recruiting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer youth and young adults age 13-21 to participate in a project exploring the decision to come out to family as gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer. The questionnaire and in-depth interview will take about 2-2.5 hours and participants will receive a $10 gift card for their feedback. 1. GRADUATE SCHOOL CLOSURE DUE TO CLEMENT WEATHER

The Graduate School will be closed due to a sudden outbreak of incredibly good weather. 3. INTERDISCIPLINARY SPEAKER SERIES PRESENTS: DAMN, YELLED THE SALMON WHEN IT HIT A CONCRETE WALL

Ig Noble Prize winner Richard Stephens will share the details of his research on swearing as a response to pain. Participants will be inflicted with some pain to test the validity of the research findings, and the range of responses in various languages will be recorded.  The speaker series allows graduate students and faculty from across the university to share their teaching and research passions in a casual atmosphere. Light refreshments will be served. Some may be excruciatingly hot.

4. APPLICATION FEE REFUNDS
Due to an unforeseen surplus in its operational budget, the Graduate School will be offering a one-time application fee refund for all currently enrolled graduate students. To be issued a cash refund of your application fee, you must present yourself in person to Ms. Sandy Hall in 100 Graduate Life Center between 8:00pm and 8:01pm on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. To be eligible for the refund, you will need to supply a notarized copy of your Virginia Tech admission letter and  your HokiePassport with a short-hair photo of you.

5. NEW GRAD COURSE STARTING SUMMER 2014: GRAD 8004 PRODUCTIVE PROCRASTINATION
Associate Deans Hajj and Blieszner will team-teach a new special study course beginning Summer I, 2014 and continuing every term including Maymester and Wintersession. GRAD 8004, Very Special Study: Productive Procrastination, will cover basic and advanced techniques for extending opportunities to remain in a comfortable graduate student status for as long as possible. Extensive practice in applying procrastination techniques in multiple disciplines, with assignments tailored to students’ major and level of procrastination experience. Upon successful completion of this course, students shall be able to: (1)  complete enrollment,  drop, and withdraw forms with mistakes and significant delays; (2) manage emotions and guilt associated with watching TV instead of completing school work; (3) deliver convincingly the known/most common excuses to request multi-purpose extensions; (4) lead a team of procrastinators for the purposes of collecting, counting, and adding to uncompleted tasks; (5) take more and more days to write extensive letters several pages in length to request deadline extensions. Prerequisite: Graduate standing or sitting. Credits: Variable (1-19, >19 with special permission).  May be repeated up to 10 times with different topics. Instructional Type: Hybrid (lectures, labs, on-line, on-TV, on-couch).  Grading Options: A-F, P/F, NG, NR, EQ, X, WP, or WF.

6. STEGER TRAVEL INITIATIVE
The Division of Outreach and International Activities is pleased to announce the Steger Travel Initiative.  This new initiative provides free trips to exotic international locales for conducting personal research into the culture, geography, anthropology, sociology and history of these locations.  Destinations include Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Aruba, Barbados, Capetown, Johannesburg, Cairo, Casa Blanca, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, Berlin, Zurich, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Bombay, Katmandu, Bangkok, Singapore, Bali, Manila, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Tokyo. 7. NEW CHILD-CARE ALTERNATIVE IN THE GLC
The Graduate School offers a new, low-cost child-care opportunity for female graduate students. After some renovations, Room C will be turned into a giant ball pit, where children can be dropped off daily (aged new born to 3, must be potty trained) from 7:00-7:05am. Students must pay $125 per child/month. Each additional child gets a 10% discount. Children can be retrieved from the ball pit between 8:00-8:05pm daily. This program supports graduate student parents who need some time away from their children to conduct their research.
