4. LEARN TURKISH AT VT FREE

Janet Kunz, International Tax Specialist, will review the types of income that a foreign national can earn, work restrictions, taxes required to be withheld (taken out) of payments, tax treaties, tax identification numbers, pay dates, documents required by Payroll and tax return reporting. This session may be most helpful for new international students who returning students who are working at VT for the first time and want to better understand their pay stub and tax options.

12. RAFTING/CANOEING/KAYAKING TRIP

If you are interested in rafting an epic river this fall, the Outdoor Club at VT (OCVT) has just the trip for you! OCVT will be doing the Gauley Marathon trip, which consists of rafting both the upper and lower sections of the river in one run of 23 miles. The Gauley River of WV is one of the top whitewater rivers in the world with many class 4 and 5 rapids. Gauley season is only for a few weeks of Sep and Oct each year. OCVT has worked out a great price. Exercise your imagination and creativity in a short design contest (charrette) based on a real-world project that’s coming to Blacksburg. The challenge includes generating conceptual design and naming ideas for a new grad housing complex. Teams of up to three may compete for $100 gift certificates to local restaurants. Background in architecture, landscape architecture or construction is helpful but not required; interdisciplinary teams are encouraged. 21. PART-TIME ASSISTANTSHIP OPENING AT FRALIN LIFE SCI INSTITUTE – 2nd posting
The Communications Assistant GA for the Fralin Life Science Institute will serve as the writer and editor of the monthly e-newsletter, Inside Fralin, and will be responsible for identifying and developing content for Fralin’s social media sites (currently Facebook and Twitter).  In addition, the GA will assist the communications officer with identifying and developing content for the website, news releases, news videos, and marketing materials, and will help with special events planning, including workshops, conferences, open houses and faculty and student events. 23. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY WITH WALKING TRIALS – 2nd posting
Does the way you move and perform daily activities determine your proneness to falls? Participants in this study on functional and movement variability in laboratory and semi-naturalistic environments will perform walking trials on treadmill and floor with various daily activities, along with pillow carriage. There may be a random slip perturbation anytime while walking, but you will be fully secured in harness. This study will include an in-person lab session, for which you may sign up by emailing the co-investigators (locomotionVT@gmail.com).  The study will last approximately 5 hours and $10/hour will be awarded to the participants. Grad students are sought for a mentor program geared towards underrepresented students who are in their first and second year at VT. Mentors are expected to share their wisdom and experience in support of the success of incoming freshman and sophomore African American students.  This program is not only a benefit to the undergraduates but also to those providing mentoring. 25. PARTICIPANTS WITH SOCIAL ANXIETY OR AUSTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER SOUGHT FOR EYE GAZE STUDY – 3rd posting
VT researchers are seeking teenagers and adults ages 16-45 with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (such as Asperger’s) or Social Anxiety Disorder to participate in a study on the influence of social anxiety on gaze patterns. Involvement in the study will require one visit to the VT campus, after completing a brief telephone screen to determine eligibility. Total time commitment is 1.5-2.5 hours. If you are not a VT student who can receive Sona extra credit, you will be paid $20.00 for participating. Participants driving more than 30 miles to and from the study appointment will also receive mileage reimbursement ($0.50 per mile traveled, with a maximum mileage reimbursement of $50.00). Enroll now in the VT-sponsored student medical insurance plan through Aetna: the open enrollment period is from Jul 26-Sep 30. Read more at http://www.co.vt.edu/Risk/studenthealthinsr/. Please note that due to low enrollment levels in the voluntary dental plan option, Aetna does not offer this program for the 2013-2014 academic year.  Because VT is a state agency, it cannot direct students to specific carriers with whom it has no formal relationship. The Student Medical Insurance Office recommends that students use the internet to identify dental insurance options in Virginia. In general, plans priced in the $460 – $500 range could provide comparable coverage to the previously offered plan. VT-SCORE (VT Signal Control & Operation Research and Education Systems lab) is conducting a driving simulator study to investigate driver behavior, performance, and attention when encountering the yellow light at signalized intersections. This is a multi-state study that looks at the effect of driver experience on driver behavior near traffic signals. The study will take no more than an hour, and your participation can contribute to the development of more intelligent control systems that could reduce crashes at signalized intersections and ultimately save lives. The VT C.A.P. Lab in the Psychology Department is conducting a new study focusing on children’s developing ability to control their actions during games like Simon Says. Researchers are looking for 4- to 4.5-year-old children to visit the lab for one to two hours. During this visit, researchers will play some fun word and movement games with participants. This study aims to develop the fullest picture to date of people’s likes and dislikes in the field of music, examining music genre; the emotions that music arouse and personality, and how all these variables inter-relate. This study is the first to bring all of the variables together, allowing researchers to understand the relationships among variables and their impact. This study is organized by Queen’s University, an Irish University partnered with VT. Participation involves completing a number of questionnaires that are designed to measure a number of personal characteristics. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and you can withdraw at any stage. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. The Graduate School was contacted by local developers for thoughts and suggestions about ways to improve the variety and availability of graduate housing within the Town of Blacksburg. Exercise your imagination and creativity in a short design contest (charrette) based on a real-world project that’s coming to Blacksburg. The challenge includes generating conceptual design and naming ideas for a new grad housing complex. Teams of up to three may compete for $100 gift certificates to local restaurants. 22. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY – 1st posting
VT-SCORE (VT Signal Control & Operation Research and Education Systems lab) is conducting a driving simulator study to investigate driver behavior, performance, and attention when encountering the yellow light at signalized intersections. This is a multi-state study that looks at the effect of driver experience on driver behavior near traffic signals. The study will take no more than an hour, and your participation can contribute to the development of more intelligent control systems that could reduce crashes at signalized intersections and ultimately save lives. Participation is completely voluntary, and you will get a first-hand experience dealing with interesting driving simulation equipment. You can opt out of the experiment at any time. Must be licensed drivers and at least 18. Researchers are particularly interested in recruiting participants who are originally from VA, MD, and PA. 23. FOUR- TO FOUR-AND-A-HALF-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN SOUGHT FOR STUDY – 1st posting
The VT C.A.P. Lab in the Psychology Department is conducting a new study focusing on children’s developing ability to control their actions during games like Simon Says. Researchers are looking for 4- to 4.5-year-old children to visit the lab for one to two hours. During this visit, researchers will play some fun word and movement games with participants. 24. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON PSYCHOLOGY OF MUSIC PREFERENCES – 2nd posting
This study aims to develop the fullest picture to date of people’s likes and dislikes in the field of music, examining music genre; the emotions that music arouse and personality, and how all these variables inter-relate. This study is the first to bring all of the variables together, allowing researchers to understand the relationships among variables and their impact. This study is organized by Queen’s University, an Irish University partnered with VT. Participation involves completing a number of questionnaires that are designed to measure a number of personal characteristics. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and you can withdraw at any stage. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. Dedicated graduate student and graduate family housing has been a concern of graduate students, the GSA and the Graduate School for several years now. The Graduate School was contacted by local developers for thoughts and suggestions about ways to improve the variety and availability of graduate housing within the Town of Blacksburg. We have developed this survey to inquire about your interest and needs for graduate housing. A site has already been identified and the local developers intend to begin construction of new housing in the South Main Kroger vicinity within the next 18-24 months.
