1. WEEKLY SERVICES IN THE GLC
Weekly services are on hiatus for the summer, except for GLC Café and Statistical Consulting:

2. TRANSIT OF VENUS VIEWING
Tuesday, Jun 5, 6:00-8:00pm, Hahn Hall North Lawn
Join the VT Department of Physics for a once in a lifetime experience – the next Venus transit won’t occur until 2117, and you know you won’t live that long! Venus will pass in front of the sun, an event which helped hundreds of years ago to measure the first distances to the planets in the solar system. Solar telescopes, pinhole projections, a live webcam, and a magnified projection system will be set up to experience the event in an appropriate and safe viewing environment. 3. GLC CAFÉ PM

Thursday, Jun 7,  3:30-5:00pm, GLC Reading Room   
The GLC Café continues throughout the summer with coffee and tea in the wonderful company of your graduate-student and Grad-School colleagues. Bring your own mug if you can.  Free coffee, tea and light snacks provided every week.

4. GSA CASCADES HIKE

Saturday, Jun 9, 11:00am-3:00pm, Cascades
Celebrate the end of the semester by enjoying the fresh air with a relaxing hike to the Cascades waterfall.  Socialize with and meet other students who are staying in Blacksburg for the summer.  Lunch will not be provided (bring your own), but the group will stop to eat half-way through the hike.  Volunteers are needed to drive; however, if there is a high interest, the GSA will provide a van.  Bring your friends! 5. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY OF NIGHTTIME FEARS IN YOUNG CHILDREN – 2nd posting
Are you a parent with a child between 5 and 7 years old who has a fear of the dark? Does your child have difficulty sleeping alone at night? A new study is exploring the effectiveness of a novel bibliotherapy treatment of nighttime fears in young children. The study is being conducted at the Child Study Center at 460 Turner Street, Suite 207, Blacksburg. For more information please contact Krystal Lewis at klewis07@vt.edu or call 540-231-3514. 6. SURVEY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – 2nd posting
The Center for Sustainable Mobility of VTTI, initiated a survey to collect public opinion on use of advanced technology in cars: http://bit.ly/csmsurvey132. The survey takes about 2 minutes to complete. Please contact the researchers at 540-231-3629 or at izohdy@vt.edu if you have any questions or comments about the survey. All survey participants must be at least 18 years old. This research may be used for dissertations and/or publication and the data is collected anonymously. There are no more than minimal risks associated with participation and participation is voluntary. 7. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BIOMECHANICS STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study investigating the effects of load size and weight and the use of assistive devices during load carriage. Participants are invited to complete either or both of two separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2-3 hrs) and will be compensated $10/hour. During these sessions, participants will be asked to carry a variety of loads across a path or on a treadmill.  To qualify you must be male, 18-35 years old, and regularly exercise at least 2-3 times/wk. 8. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR EFFECTS OF FLEXION ON STABILITY OF TORSO STUDY– 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study investigating the effects of flexion on stability of the human torso.  The study consists of 4 separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 1 hour) and participants will be compensated $10/hour.  To qualify you must be between the ages of 18-29 and regularly exercise at least 2-3 times per week.  For more information or to inquire about participation, please contact Neema at neema@vt.edu.  Please include your age, gender, and general availability when responding.

9. DORM COORDINATOR POSITION THIS SUMMER
VT Upward Bound is searching for a dorm coordinator to ensure the smooth operation of the dorm during the summer. Coordinators supervise counselors, schedule employees, maintain paperwork regarding student activities, plan meetings and act as liaison with FT staff. They are also responsible for supervising six or fewer “bridge” students who take classes at VT. Responsibilities run Jun 19-Aug 5.
