LISA (Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) is providing a series of evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data. 6. DOCTORAL GRAD ASSISTANTSHIP OPENING FOR AY 2012-13 – 1st posting
Doctoral Graduate Assistant required for Fall 2012-Spring 2013, 20 hrs/wk, standard assistantship benefit pkg. This assistantship will provide academic and program support to the music education program leader, Department of Teaching and Learning. 7. CHINESE MALE STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS NEEDED FOR STUDY – 1st posting
A VT doctoral student in human development is conducting a study to learn about how Chinese male international students and scholars construct their sense of being a man and their intimate relationships. In this IRB-approved study subjects will take part in an interview that takes approximately 30-60 minutes.  The information provided by the participants will be held confidential. Your name will not be associated with any study results. Participants must be Chinese male, 18 or older, hold F-1, J-1, or H-1 visa, and been in the United States for at least 6 months. 8. ANKLE INSTABILITY STUDY – 1st posting

Healthy, young adults with and without a history of ankle sprains are sought for participation in a research project on ankle-sprain risk factors.  The project consists of two (2) studies of which participants may complete one or both.  These studies will require participants to perform single leg drop landings before and after fatigue (STUDY 1), and complete ankle stiffness and position sense evaluations under fatigued and braced conditions (STUDY 2).  All procedures have been approved by the VT-IRB. Must be 18-35 years old, active (exercise 2-3 times/wk), have no existing joint problems or chronic joint pain, and must not be participating in physical rehab or regularly using ankle tape or bracing. 9. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR SLIP AND FALL RISK STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study assessing the effect of localized muscle fatigue on slip and fall risks. The study consists of 4 experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2-2.5 hours).  Participants will be compensated $10/hour with a $40 bonus after completing all sessions. Researchers are seeking 16 participants for a study to compare navigation techniques in 3D immersive virtual environments. Participants will navigate the virtual maze with either a traditional interface (i.e. joystick of a wand device) or a new interface (for which you will use your own body, such as fingers or legs). Due to the tasks that may require some physical activities, you should have no problem with standing and moving your body, e.g., head, arm/hand/finger and leg/foot, including turning your upper body. The study takes about 90 minutes, including filling out questionnaires and short breaks. Must be 17 or older; study takes place in the CAVE lab (3050 Torg). Instructor: Yiming Peng. This short course provides an introduction to JMP statistical software and is designed for people who are not familiar with JMP. It starts with basic data manipulation and moves to some advanced features. Topics covered in this course include importing data, graphing data, descriptive statistics such as numerical summaries, and inferential statistics such as t-tests, ANOVA, and regression. 5. SHORT STAT COURSE: JMP CAPABILITIES IN DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS
Thursday, Jun 21; 4:00-6:00pm, 3060 Torg
Instructor: Liaosa Xu. The classical design (factorial design, response surface design, etc.) may fail to meet our requirements due to an irregular design space, involving categorical variables, a nonstandard model, or unusual requirements of sample size. The presenter will introduce how to use JMP to tackle these design challenges within a unified framework and make best use of your design budget. The topics covered include: computer generated design, augmenting an existing design, and design from a candidate set. 2. TRANSIT OF VENUS VIEWING
Tuesday, Jun 5, 6:00-8:00pm, Hahn Hall North Lawn
Join the VT Department of Physics for a once in a lifetime experience – the next Venus transit won’t occur until 2117, and you know you won’t live that long! Venus will pass in front of the sun, an event which helped hundreds of years ago to measure the first distances to the planets in the solar system. Solar telescopes, pinhole projections, a live webcam, and a magnified projection system will be set up to experience the event in an appropriate and safe viewing environment. 7. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BIOMECHANICS STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study investigating the effects of load size and weight and the use of assistive devices during load carriage. Participants are invited to complete either or both of two separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2-3 hrs) and will be compensated $10/hour. During these sessions, participants will be asked to carry a variety of loads across a path or on a treadmill.  To qualify you must be male, 18-35 years old, and regularly exercise at least 2-3 times/wk. 8. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR EFFECTS OF FLEXION ON STABILITY OF TORSO STUDY– 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study investigating the effects of flexion on stability of the human torso.  The study consists of 4 separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 1 hour) and participants will be compensated $10/hour.  To qualify you must be between the ages of 18-29 and regularly exercise at least 2-3 times per week.  For more information or to inquire about participation, please contact Neema at neema@vt.edu.  Please include your age, gender, and general availability when responding.

9. DORM COORDINATOR POSITION THIS SUMMER
VT Upward Bound is searching for a dorm coordinator to ensure the smooth operation of the dorm during the summer. Coordinators supervise counselors, schedule employees, maintain paperwork regarding student activities, plan meetings and act as liaison with FT staff. They are also responsible for supervising six or fewer “bridge” students who take classes at VT. Responsibilities run Jun 19-Aug 5.
