Tuesday and Thursday, Sep 6 and 8, 3:00pm & 1:00pm, meet in GLC Lobby
Go on a walking tour of Blacksburg with fellow grads, led by Town-of-Blacksburg staff. Explore the original town limits and see some of the oldest structures in
Blacksburg. Wear comfortable shoes! Meet in the GLC Lobby at least ten minutes before the tour is scheduled and then the group will walk together to the municipal building, where the tour will begin. Sign up here.

3. COFFEE AND CONVERSATION

Meet other graduate students and GLC Fellows and enjoy refreshments and good conversation along with graduate student leaders. This is the last of this series as part of orientation. The GLC café on Thursdays will continue throughout the semester.

4. STAT SHORT COURSE: WHAT LISA CAN DO FOR YOU, ANT T-TEST/ANOVA TUTORIAL

Taught by Dr. Anne Ryan, this short course will first explain the services provided by the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) and second it will offer t-test and ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) training for researchers. The statistical training will include the discussion of the one sample t-test, the two sample t-test, matched-pairs t-test, ANOVA, and data analysis examples using JMP statistical software. More information>>.

5. GSA MOVIE NIGHT AT THE LYRIC: HARRY POTTER!

Walk-in career advising is available weekly in the GLC, but this week it’s especially important that you get your resume in good shape to be ready for next week’s job fairs (Engineering Expo 9/13-14 and Business Horizons 9/15). If you can’t make it into the GLC, Career Services will also have extended walk-in hours at the Smith Career Center on Wednesday from 9:00am-4:00pm for resume critiques. Normal walk-in hours at the Smith Career Center are M-F, 12-3pm).

7. CAREER FAIR PREPARATION FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

There are several large job fairs on campus this fall and employers are interested in talking with graduate students —- especially at the master’s level. Do you know how to present yourself to an employer at a job fair? What to ask? What they’ll expect? Come to this seminar to learn a few tricks of this trade!

8. LEARN TURKISH AT VT
Starting Wednesday, Sep 7, 6:00pm, Cranwell International Center
Experienced teachers are offering Turkish language classes at the Cranwell International Center through the Intercultural Understanding Club. You don’t need to know any Turkish to start these classes; courses are offered from elementary to advanced levels. For the fall program: One hour-long class per week, four classes in a month. 9. GLC CAFÉ

Enjoy free coffee and tea in the GLC Reading Room on Thursday afternoons and socialize with your fellow grads. Some weeks we’ll have faculty guests; at other times we’ll feature coffee from different countries; sometimes we’ll have graduate student organizations as hosts. 10. HUME CTR INFO SESSION ABOUT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS

12. MIND/BODY YOGA WORKOUT

Treat yourself to a fund group session with Kristen DeAngelis. Yoga strengthens and sculpts the body while relaxing the mind, making it a perfect practice to get you ready for the fall semester. 13. KIDS NIGHT OUT
Thursdays during semester (except breaks & football nights), 6:00-8:30pm, VT Women’s Center
Take advantage of this free drop-in evening of childcare for 2 to 12-year-old kids of VT students, provided by the Women’s Center. Kids must be toilet trained. Fun, crafts, toys, games and new friends, plus a snack. No pre-registration required. For additional information contact Jessie Meltsner.

14. CPR TRAINING SESSION

You never know when a friend or colleague will be in need of CPR. Make sure you know the proper steps. Tony Mills from Environmental Health and Safety will lead this training for graduate students. Veteran and active military graduate students are invited to this resource fair designed to meet the specific needs of VT students. Information will be available about VA health services, resources, VA health care enrollment and eligibility, women’s health, mental health, My HealtheVet online information, improving access to rural Veterans. All veterans, their spouses, caregivers, or members of the community who would like to learn more information about VA programs and services are encouraged to attend.

16. GRADUATE SCHOLARS SOCIETY (GSS) INFO SESSION AND REGISTRATION

18. ISVT ANNUAL SHOWCASE

The Iranian Society at VT invites you to this showcase that represents the cultural contribution and scholarly achievements of the Iranian community at Virginia Tech and promotes the exchange of ideas between researches from variety of backgrounds. 23. 2011-12 UNIVERSITY-SPONSORED HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN – SIGN UP BY OCT 3
At Virginia Tech, domestic students are encouraged, but not required, to have personal health insurance. International students and veterinary medicine student are required to have health insurance either through VT plan (provided by Aetna) or a comparable plan. 24. NEW GRAD ASSISTANTSHIP POSITION OPEN – 1st posting
VT University Relations is looking to fill a graduate assistantship position asap. The GA will provide desktop support for Windows-based and Mac systems for approximately 50 professionals in University Relations. The GA will also be responsible for handling support requests related to the 4 display units in the Burruss Hall foyer and 8 units in the Visitor and Undergraduate Admission Center. Responsibilities span three distinct buildings on the VT campus, requiring that the GA be flexible and capable of getting from one location to another. Must be proficient in traditional suites of office software (i.e., MS Windows 7, Office) and Mac), as well as specialized software to produce hi def video productions and high quality page-makeup publications, and familiar with Flash and other graphic programs. 25. GRAD ASSISTANTSHIP POSITION OPEN – 2nd posting
VT Department of Music Digital Interactive Sound & Intermedia Studio (DISIS) is looking to fill a GA position as soon as possible. The assistantship includes full tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend (approx. level 7). GA will assist in daily operations of the studio (software and equipment maintenance, assistance with conducting specific research projects including Linux Laptop Orchestra (L2Ork)). Music training and computer programming skills are desired. Knowledge of Linux is a plus. 26. SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR STUDENT-GRANT PROGRAM

Do you have a unique idea that could help improve your community? Do you want to work with a community organization to create a lasting impact? The Social Entrepreneur grant can provide seed money for students who have a creative project or idea to address a specific need in their community. 27. RESEARCH STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – 1st posting
Participants are sought for a study about loads on the knees while performing industrial tasks. Participants must be males or females between 18-30, and (1) should not have any current or recent history of ankle, knee and hip joint injury (2) should not experience pain or discomfort while squatting or kneeling on the floor (3) should exercise regularly (4) should have no abnormal health condition. Participants will perform simulated industrial tasks and will be expected to attend just one session lasting for about 2.5 hours. No compensation will be provided. 28. PAID PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY OF 2-WAY COMMUNICATION – 1st posting
Researchers are looking for couples to participate in a study about two-way telecommunication using remote touch and audio channels. Participating couples must be: (1) over 18 years old; (2) have been dating over 1 year or married w/o kids; (3) speak English as the main language with each other; (4) at least one member affiliated with Virginia Tech. This IRB-approved study examines the effects of remote touch and audio channel on communication particularly in instances where the couple has feelings about a topic and when they may disagree. Couple will be situated in two study rooms and asked to have three discussion sessions through audio or remote touch and audio channels. The whole experiment will take 2 hours. 29. RESEARCH SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR HNFE STUDY – 1st posting

Research subjects are wanted for a study to determine whether daily consumption of corn oil/omega-3 fat will influence muscle soreness, damage and inflammation that occurs after weight training. Must consume supplement for 45 days, perform strenuous weight training bout, go through several weeks of weight training program developed by the researchers, and provide seven blood samples over 45 days. Must be healthy males (non-smokers, no orthopedic limitations to exercise; no chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, bleeding, or inflammatory diseases); 18-28; schedule compatible with testing and training. 30. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BIOMECHANICS STUDY – 1st posting

Participants are sought for a study investigating the effects of prolonged flexion on the biomechanics of the human torso.  The study consists of five separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 1 hour) and participants will be compensated $10/hour.  To qualify you must be 18-29 and regularly exercise at least 2-3 times per week. GRADUATE HONOR SYSTEM PANELIST TRAINING
